I have 6 Ubuntu 8.04.1 machines and all of them developed the same problem at about the same time. The workaround noted above of editing smb.conf worked in all 6 machines. It does take about 44 seconds for the Places Network applet to appear, but after that, browsing the network is fine. the workaround didn't work. i'm able to list shares only through smb4k. exactly the same problem here. The workaround works like a charm, and should be put into an upgrade/release.
