So nobody knows how/when/why this happens/happened.

OK, thanks for the help. The problem never returned. I still have some
other bugs, but that one is gone.

Re: [Bug 247067] Re: Evolution fails to launch

2008-07-25 Thread Frank Hieber
OK, this was strange. Out of the blue, Evolution popped up a handful of
appointment alerts. So apparently part of the application was running in
the background. I decided to attempt to launch Evolution and it launched
correctly. It even showed the folder subscription that I had selected that
seemed to be the initial source of the problems. I've since disabled those
subscriptions in case those were the source of the problem. I don't know
yet if it will continue to work, but for now, it is working. I'll let you
know if the situation changes.

[Bug 247067] Re: Evolution fails to launch

2008-07-18 Thread hggdh
The gdb trace shows the problem on evolution-exchange, with e2k-result.c
@line 435 triggering it.

This is the piece of code that drives it:

e2k_results_free (E2kResult *results, int nresults)
{
int i;

for (i = 0; i  nresults; i++)
e2k_result_clear (results[i]);
g_free (results);
}

I understand, from your last comment, that you are running 2.22.3.1 now. Is
that correct?

Also -- you may probably bypass this error if you uninstall evolution-
exchange.

Re: [Bug 247067] Re: Evolution fails to launch

2008-07-16 Thread Frank Hieber
I tried to start with a new user and I had the same problem. I then enabled
the 'Proposed' repository so that I could update to the latest version.
That doesn't seem to have helped either. Does evolution store settings
someplace other than at /home/username/.evolution? I've tried to delete my
'.evolution' folder and it seems to put all of the old settings back just
like they were, but I can't figure out where it is pulling from. I've given
up on repairing it. I thought I'd just start over but I can't even do
that. I tried to purge evolution from my computer but it held some settings
somewhere that I can't find.

[Bug 247067] Re: Evolution fails to launch

2008-07-11 Thread hggdh
@Frank: yes, but it will be a bit painful... Chris' is correct, and it
was a good catch from him.

You will need to install both the evolution-exchange and evolution debug
packages; then you can either run it again from the console, and attach
the output here, or run evolution under gdb (from a console also). It
seems, from the trace available, that evolution-exchage is causing the
grief, but the trace is rather incomplete.

Please tell us if you need detailed instructions.

[Bug 247067] Re: Evolution fails to launch

2008-07-11 Thread Frank Hieber
I installed the Evolution dbg package and reran the backtrace using GDB.
It seemed to work a bit better this time. I've attached the backtrace.
I hope that there is something in there that you can use. I did notice
that the console generated an error message when I launched Evolution
about being unable to connect to subscribed folders. That was the last
thing that I changed before I started having problems, so that is a
likely suspect. I tried to subscribe to a public folder on our exchange
server. But it didn't seem to work. I thought that I unsubscribed
before restarting Evolution, but maybe I missed something. Evolution
started using GDB, but it would not allow me to access the Exchange
Server. My Gmail account appeared to be working though.

Hello Frank,

The console output and the .xsession-errors both point to a critical
error on memory management, which seem to cause Evolution to die.

Unfortunately, we do not have a nice backtrace to follow this up... so I

hggdh: If Evolution is aborting because of the memory error, then I
don't think Apport will catch that. It currently doesn't generate crash
