[Bug 256777] Re: POP server port setting is missing, setting other port then 25 not possible

2008-11-13 Thread lokad
Just in case anybody comes here again:

Go to

Edit Preferences Mail Accounts [select your account] Edit
Receiving Email

Here, under the title Configuration, you can specify the

Server: pop.myprovider.tld[:port]

where port defaults to 25.

But this should be mentioned in a tooltip or in the help or something
like that.

[Bug 256777] Re: POP server port setting is missing, setting other port then 25 not possible

2008-11-09 Thread MJ Costik
OK, enough.

Comcast just changed from port 25 to 587 because 25 was too busy and
now I am shut out of using Evolution Mail. I've had to switch to
Thunderbird where I can put in the 587 port.

Inconvenient and a bit more if you ask me.

2008-11-09 Thread Robert Okadar
like Sebastien Bacher already said, you can use 'server:portnumber' to
specify a portnumber to use ... although I never found where to do that
... ?

thank you for your bug report, you can specify the port on the server
line, that's not a bug

Re: [Bug 256777] Re: POP server port setting is missing, setting other port then 25 not possible

2008-08-11 Thread Robert Okadar
i agree, 25 is the default port. but not all servers work on port 25 and
restricting any mail client to it IS a bad thing to do. i can't go to google
with a gun and make them change their pop server port to the default value,
do you agree? :))) i don't know why they don't use port 25 for gmail, but
they don't. anyway, this is a bad idea from start not to allow user to set
POP server port. setting the default value with possibility of changing it,
is the right approach.
evolution programmers are not bad - in contrary, evolution is a very good
mail client for me (i love it). but this is a thing for a serious review,
not being able to change the port is a major restriction, and i use linux
and FOSS exactly because its highly customizeable.

end conclusion: gmail is no more accessible with evolution because someone
decided that software should overtake the control where it should not. i
hope i will manage to come to evolution irc meeting and put this to
discussion. not being able to set POP server port is just not acceptable
for any serious mail client.

With my best regards,
Robert Okadar

This is more like a bug in thinking then programming. You guys provided us
with very inconvenient automated feature to set POP server port to 25
without possibility to change it. Any POP server that works with other port
then 25 is practically invisible to Evolution. For example gmail ... not
 accessible from Evolution anymore!
This is critical to put back. Btw., plz don't turn Ubuntu into Windows. We
want control over our system and not a bunch of automated things we can't
 control, g

 p.s. I use Evolution v2.22.3.1
p.p.s - I'm sorry if you don't consider this for bug, but for all gmail
users this is a serious problem and either they must give up their gmail acc
(not likely) or switch to more configurable mail client (more likely).
