[Bug 25977] Re: places menu should include the trash as a place

2015-05-20 Thread Carl Ponder
Personally, my bottom panel is full of more important things like the
workplace-switcher.
I don't interact with my trash bin very often, but that makes it all the more
frustrating that it's not in any obvious place.
The "places" menu is exactly where it belongs, since it's implemented as a
special folder.

[Bug 25977] Re: places menu should include the trash as a place

2010-06-01 Thread Vish
Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. And thanks to the feedback
from the Accessibility team.
However, a paper cut should be a small usability issue, in the default Ubuntu
install, that affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. So this bug
can't be addressed as part of this project.

As mentioned earlier,
- Trash applet needs fixing to properly be read as "Trash"

- Adding one more item to the Places menu would be duplicating the trash applet
for a default install.
- If the trash is frequented by a user often , it can be easily bookmarked [
added to the Places menu ].
- Citing inconsistency with "Go" menu is not a valid argument , since the
Places menu has items which are not present in the Go menu and vice-versa.

[Bug 25977] Re: places menu should include the trash as a place

2010-05-31 Thread Luke Yelavich
I am of the opinion that the applet's accessibility properties should be
fixed instead. If users want to go into the trash, then they should find
it on the panel.

Having said that, we could probably make it easier somehow if one uses
an accessibility profile to install/run the live CD. I am more enclined
to set up a shortcut key if possible, to open the trash. Thoughts?

[Bug 25977] Re: places menu should include the trash as a place

2010-05-31 Thread Sajjad
Dear Alan.

You are right. But blind people are not going to delete the item by
dragging it into the bottom panel. Rather, they would hit the delete
button and later if they plan to do an undelete, finds it difficult to
locate the trash from the bottom panel. Hence it would make some real
sense if we can pull a menu item under places menu.

[Bug 25977] Re: places menu should include the trash as a place

2010-05-31 Thread Alan Bell
I think we have to separate the operations one might do with the trash system.
The function of the applet is primarily so that stuff can be dropped on it to
be deleted, so we have the "deleting stuff" use case. One might also want to
undelete something, which involves opening it up as a folder and moving one or
more files to another location where a file could be put, the "undeleting" use
case. Finally one might want to permanently delete the contents, or "empty the
trash".
The applet is in a corner of the screen (see Fitts law) and is well placed for
dragging stuff with a mouse onto it to delete it. If you are using a keyboard
the delete key does the same thing, so it is in fact easier to perform the
deleting stuff use case from the keyboard. If you want to do some undeleting or
arguably if you want to empty the trash then you are thinking about it in a
"its a folder" mindset and it is logical to find it via nautilus.

[Bug 25977] Re: places menu should include the trash as a place

2010-05-29 Thread Vish
The Fix suggested here would effectively mean duplication of the "Trash"
in a default install.[applet and in places menu]

@arky: The Go menu also lists Templates folder, should that be in the Places
menu too?
As mentioned earlier , we already have a trash applet by default , the issue is
with the Description being "Menu" , that needs fixing rather than duplicating.
Further the trash can be added as an extra bookmark, if frequently used.
[I do realize the accessibility work you do for blind users though :) ]

I'v raised this issue with the accessibility team and marking as
incomplete awaiting their assessment.

suggest that we should provide a trash item under computer in places

[Bug 25977] Re: places menu should include the trash as a place

2010-05-08 Thread Wolf
Not everyone notices a small icon at the bottom right corner of the
screen. One could expect to have the Trash in the Places menu, since
everything else is there already. (Home folder, Desktop, Documents,
Removable media...)

I agree that it is an inconsistency with Nautilus's Go menu and I
personally never use the Trash icon at the bottom right on the panel. I
have asked Ubuntu-illiterate users to find the Trash, and their first
reaction was to go in the Places menu, not to look for an icon that
looks like an empty glass of water, I mean, like a trash can. My first
reaction as an experienced Ubuntu user is to add it to the Places menu
using Nautilus's Bookmark menu. If "Home Folder", "Desktop" and
"Computer" are there, why not "Trash"?

Sajjad wrote :

Shouldnt the proper fix be, to add the description and make it say "Trash" ,
Why the need for duplication? [trying to understand the problem they face]
Also to note is that the Trash can be bookmarked and added to the list if user
is so frequently using it.
Why keep extending the list by adding more items and making it a default? We
dont have Templates or Public folder either by default. They are places too.

Vish,
The users are unable to locate the Trash from the bottom panel as there is no
description over there. It just says 'Menu'.
The Trash is a place to like any other places shown listed in the Places menu,
hence this would be an advantage for them.
