Volume seems to be affected by 3 controls only 1 of them is accessible through Totem. There is also a main volume control on the taskbar by the date/time on the desktop (in Windows it'd be called the 'System Tray' i think). Finally there is PCM volume control but i don't know how to access it. It's in one of the threads if you search on 'Volume' it should be buried in there somewhere.
