[Bug 32457] Screensaver activates while playing a game
Public bug report changed: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/32457 Comment: Then we need to edit this bug's description and add SDL as affected by this bug. That way other bug reports for games linked against SDL can be marked as duplicates of this bug, and for the others we'll have to keep filling bugs (unless gnome-screensaver is dropped, but I don't think it's ever going to be considered). However, I know even less about SDL games, so it's better you do it (you reported the bug), else we'll have to keep praying for "somebody else" to write an usefull bug report, which doesn't seem to be happening. Usually, when the bug report is precise enough, it's fixed faster (that means being really precise about what to fix. Here, gnome-screensaver is not the application which code will be modified). At least, that was the case for vlc and xine. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 32457] Screensaver activates while playing a game
Public bug report changed: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/32457 Comment: Loic, all the games I tested that activated the screensaver while playing were SDL games that used the keyboard only. Some of them would prevent the screensaver from coming on if you moved the mouse, but not all of them. (moving the mouse in games that do not require it is not any more of a solution than moving the mouse every 9 minutes while watching a movie). I no longer have the time to file bugs on every single game as I thought I would, but because the ones I did test were all using SDL, I think the better option is indeed to file this single bug under SDL, and add something to the keyboard handler routine or so. Note that this would also have the benefit of fixing commercial games (which are NOT going to be fixed by having their own bugs opened in this bug tracker) such as Professor Fizzwizzle, which is also on the list of games that use SDL and do not use the mouse and do not prevent the screensaver from activating. Reporting bugs on 25-30 games individually is going to substantially increase open bug reports, email traffic, and the Ubuntu-debian delta. I think we ought to take the efficient route. Getting one patch for SDL accepted upstream will likely be much easier than 25-30 different games. And commercial games on top of that. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 32457] Screensaver activates while playing a game
Public bug report changed: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/32457 Comment: If you have a look at the upstream gnome bug #333280 this is exactly the procedure that the developer suggested there. Still, there is a issue about gnome-screensaver activating after a suspend, which is different then the games thing. I agree that, bug #33734 is not a duplicate of this one. I would suggest to open a new bug about the suspend issue and one for each application which is failing. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 32457] Screensaver activates while playing a game
Public bug report changed: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/32457 Comment: I might be wrong, but I think a separate bug should be filled against each application unless these games are using a common system (like games built with SDL). So it should be one bug for gnome-screensaver starting with tuxracer, one for gnome-screensaver starting with frozen-bubble, etc... Which means I'm not so sure Bug #33734 should really be marked as a dupplicate for this bug. The description of this bug "Screensaver activates while playing a game" seems a bit too vague (some games prevent gnome-screensaver from running, mainly desktop games like gnome games). But I could be wrong :) -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 32457] Screensaver activates while playing a game
Public bug report changed: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/32457 Comment: Oh, my bug seems to be related to upstream #332576, so I will add a watch for that. There seem to be 2 different bugs, one in the (full screen) applications that don't tell the screensaver to not activate (these should be filed upstream in the applications) and another one somewhere else that happens after you put your computer to sleep. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 32457] Screensaver activates while playing a game
Public bug report changed: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/32457 Comment: I can confirm this bug, this happened to me while I was typing (!) a text in Openoffice 2.0 (in Dapper) -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 32457] Screensaver activates while playing a game
Public bug report changed: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/32457 Comment: Using the latest Dapper, I'm getting this for things other than games as well. The screensaver will kick in while using Epiphany or Firefox during constant web activity. It has happened several times today while I've been in the middle of typing, once while entering a different bug report. This is a definite regression compared to Breezy. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 32457] Screensaver activates while playing a game
Public bug report changed: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/32457 Comment: @hackel No, this happens even when i'm playing a very busy game of tuxracer. It seems that, as soon as the game is started, the screensaver thinks it doesnt receive any input. So if the screensaver is set to 10 minutes or so, then after 10 minutes of playing the screensaver kicks in. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 32457] Screensaver activates while playing a game
Public bug report changed: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/32457 Comment: When playing a game you should still be using the computer--mouse and keyboard input should be detected and screensaver should not activate. If this is not the case, then this is definitely a bug. If you actually are not pressing any buttons in your game for longer than your -chosen- screensaver timeout, then (that game really sucks!) you should just increase the screensaver idle timeout setting, and contact the game developer to ask them to disable screensaver on their game. I do find it rather odd that a game would have that long of a no- input sequence as to activate the screensaver. Maybe you just have it set ridiculously low (<10 min?)... -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 32457] Screensaver activates while playing a game
Public bug report changed: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/32457 Task: ubuntu gnome-screensaver Status: Unconfirmed => Confirmed Comment: I took the time to register and report this bug upstream, as dholbach suggested on IRC, and just as I suspected, they closed it saying it isn't a bug. BUT, the purpose of a screensaver is not to mess up end users who are playing games or watching movies. Its purpose is to do two basic things: 1) Allow the screen to be locked while being temporarily away from the PC 2) To have something constantly moving on the screen (or alternately have a blank screen), to avoid burn-in images. If I am watching a movie or playing a game, I am not going to be temporarily away from the PC, and locking the screen is not something I will want to do, so #1 is not needed. If I am playing a game or watching a movie, then the screen is constantly changing, and therefore I am avoiding burn-in images, nullifying #2. I am not the only one who found this "functionality" to be a pain, and I think that the upstream attitude of "it should be changed in every other application" is wrong. Xscreensaver used to work just fine, and I think that given the circumstances, it should remain default in Dapper, until either upstream changes their tune, or every other application (which may or may not be actively maintianed) modifies all of their applications to work around a new screensaver design. The alternative is to leave gnome-screensaver as default and deal with many unsatisfied and annoyed users. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 32457] Screensaver activates while playing a game
Public bug report changed: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/32457 Comment: I see the same problem when playing Unreal Tournament 2004 (native Linux AMD64 version). [Bug 32457] Screensaver activates while playing a game
Public bug reported: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/32457 Affects: gnome-screensaver (Ubuntu) Severity: Normal Priority: (none set) Status: Unconfirmed Description: I am running a current Dapper as of 22-Feb-06 07:00:00 -0500 I started playing a game, Frozen Bubble, and I was doing rather well, and then the screensaver came on. I couldn't get it to go away without hitting escape several times, exiting Frozen Bubble, losing my progress in the game. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
