hi Pedro,
 here are the answers to your questions:

what happens if
you type smb:/// on the nautilus location bar? 

It shows WORKGROUP which is the correct name of our home-network. I
can access the Windows machines, but not the Ubuntu-Host-PC, from which
Ubuntu 04.09. is running in VirtualBox.


what does gvfs-ls smb:/// returns?

It returns WORKGROUP

you type that on the nautilus location bar? Does it works fine with
another new user created on your system? what does gvfs-ls smb:///
