comment on the upstream bug tracker: We now have settings for default size of the terminal. I don't think we want to remember the last used geometry. The user may have been referring to the session save stuff? I tested this with a Live CD of Ubuntu 8.04 and was not able to get GNOME Terminal to remember the size from when it was last launched. As a result, I am going to mark this as Wishlist since I cannot confirm that this feature was present in a previous release. If this is in fact a regression, and it can be proven, then the status can be changed later.
