This problem started last Friday when I got home from work.
I tried to log into Gnome as usual but it logged straight out, I tried again
and got the following error message:

Your session only lasted less than 10 seconds. If you have not logged out
yourself, this could mean that there is some installation problem or that you
may be out of disk space. Try logging in with one of the failsafe sessions to
see if you can fix this problem.
View details (~/.xsession-errors file)

I cannot remember doing anything out of the ordinary or installing
anything during my previous sessions that day.

I have tried:

*KDE - seems to work fine

*Failsafe Gnome session - same problems as above

*Recovery mode selected from GRUB loader
-Ran dpkg
-Ran fsck - no errors
Problem remains

*ran apt-get update

*ran Memtest86 from GRUB loader - no errors

If I don't click on the OK on this message I can pretty much use Gnome
(although some things won't work, like terminal and nautilus for
example, but kde versions such as konsole and dolphin will work), but I
don't think this is a long term solution for me.

Will attach .xsession-errors file
