So Alex and I had a look at this today. We think the problem is I just have too
many vfolders. Each vfolder spawns several asynchronomous operations, each
creating a pipe (and 2 file descriptors per pipe). I have over a hundred
vfolders, so i hit the default hard limit (of 10240) pretty fast.

I think i'm a bit of a minority having that many vfolders, so I don't think this
is a widespread problem.

We should probably get this filed upstream and work on it there.

Removing from FC6 Desktop tracker.

2008-04-01 Thread Perbiu
Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon, April 1 2008 Software up to date.
Pentium 4 2.5ghz, 512mb ram.

Problem: A message of Too many open files appears in Nautilus (seen in
the attach image). Then after that any icon you select in Nautilus
becomes an uknown file and icon changes. And if you try to copy or paste
or open any music files the message will appear again, Unable to copy,
Too many open files

When does it happen: After using Nautilus (30mins-1hour) of repeatedly
copy paste of copying a music files one by one to a different
location or folder. Im organizing my music files and picture files. Then
it happens, though everything is still usable except Nautilus copy
paste or by opening the file. I dont know if its a Nautilus problem or
the clipboard. It is not knew, i've experience this since Feisty.

Solution: It can be fixed by logging out-logging in, but the problem
will come back after a while.

[Bug 43900] Re: Too many open files

2007-10-25 Thread Max-Ulrich Farber
After deleting and/or copying several files from one partition (FAT-32)
to an other partition or directory, I get this message : copying
impossible, too many files open, even if there are no other files open.
Later on Gnome refuses all other File-operations and does no more
recognize the kind of the files. It seems to me that Gnome does not
correctly close files after copying or deleting.

After restarting Gnome with CtrlAltBackspace, Gnome works fine
again till the same problem occurs again. I can not find out if this is
a special FAT-32 problem.

[Bug 43900] Re: Too many open files

2006-11-13 Thread Dirk
I too am getting this problem. I am using latest Edgy for evolution and
uw-imap with an imap connection mainly. However, I have other
connections, some active, some not, to various other makes of imap
server (including exchange).

I have probably got a 100 or so folders altogether. Every couple of days
I get a too many open files message from evolution (not the data
server). But, during those two days, the opening of messages gets
progressively slower and slower. From a subjective point of view, it
seems to have got worse from Dapper-Edgy, to the extent that I am now
actively looking for an alternative MTA. As soon as I can export my
calendar and contacts I shall be changing (even though I don't really
like the alternatives as much and it will cause no end of aggravation
doing the change).

For what it is worth, I enclose an lsof dump. As you can see, the
problem appears to be the accretion of 'pipes' over time. It may be
something to do with the opening of (pdf) attachments. As an aside, why
are we (still) using pipes for network based programs in 2006?

It's a bit hard to increase the max open files limit as an ordinary user
when the default hard limit is 1024.

ulimit/limit is builtin in the shell, so you have to check the man page
