This is karmic test machine I use everyday. Cannot reproduce on a new installation of Karmic. Log filed loaded fine. Thanks for taking the time to report this bug. 1. have you tried opening the file manually to verify it isn't corrupt? 2. Does this happen on a new installation of the beta? 3. Can you please indicate what the permissions are on the file /var/log/messages? sudo ls -l /var/log/messages should provide you with that information.
