Upstream closed the bug with that comment: We won't add this checkbox back. You can choose to automatically save on logout, or use gnome-session-properties which now have a button to save the current session. Thank you for the detailed response. I am reopening this, because the UI includes an enabled option Ask on Logout which does nothing.
