I've got the same problem in python-papyon 0.4.8-0ubuntu1 in Lucid. My colleague uses the Microsoft Messenger for Mac (so it's not just iChat) and I can't see him or initialise conversations with him when he's online. I seem to have the same problem. I am now pretty sure that this problem only occurs when the other person is using iChat. This means this bug should be changed to the correct telepathy-spec. Which means we need more information from those effected. Which spec are you using that this problem occurs? (AIM, MSN, GTALK, etc...).
