I will reply on the reporter's behalf. The assumption should be that the user usually does not intend to interact with unfocused windows. I'd guess that more often than not, placing the cursor over an audio file in an unfocused window is not a good indication that the user has chosen to preview this file. Besides, requiring that the user bring a Nautilus window into focus in order to preview audio files on hover is not a huge requirement. Thank you for your argument! I've passed it upstream. However, I don't agree that Nautilus should have to defend any feature and function it has. It makes no sense and would only require more work from the developers since they'd have to spend a lot of time defending decisions made a long time ago.
