[Bug 498694] Re: sometimes resume from suspend doesn't ask for password, instead goes to straight to the desktop instead.

2011-03-06 Thread Bert Regelink
I'm running Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat (10.10) installed on a USB pendrive.
I experience this problem consistently, that is, I cannot get Ubuntu to
prompt for entering a password after resuming a locked screen in any
way.

By default the installation comes with a default user account 'ubuntu'
without a password. I've created another user account with a password
via the System - Administration - Users and Groups dialog, to make
sure this behaviour is not a result of the (default) user account having
no password configured. I've selected the Lock screen when screensaver
is active checkbox in the Screensaver Preferences. I've tested waiting
for the screensaver to become active (after 1 minute), and I've tested
by manually locking the screen (Ctrl+Alt+L). None of the efforts
resulted in the prompting of a password.

I've followed this tutorial to create the USB pendrive:
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/usb-ubuntu-710-gutsy-gibbon-install/

But used the ubuntu-10.10-desktop-i386.iso instead of 7.10. In step 17,
some files/directories (disctree, ubuntu.ico, casper/initrd.gz --
casper/initrd.lz) in the 'cp' command-line had to be omitted or altered.
After step 20 I had to modify the syslinux.cfg contained in U710fix.zip
(renamed every instance of initrd.gz to initrd.lz).

I hope someone can follow the same tutorial in order to get the same
environment, and verify the behaviour described.

2010-06-09 Thread Marc Deslauriers
Since the original reporter doesn't have this issue anymore, I am
closing this bug.

If anyone else is having similar issues, please try Ubuntu 10.04 and
file a new bug if there's still an issue.

Thanks.

2010-05-12 Thread pauliebp
It seems I have solved my case. As I am new to Ubuntu I do not know if
this is the case in previous generations but under System -
Administration there is a Login screen setup utility where I had to
remove login automatically selection. Silly, this sort of thing I
believe should be under one menu along with the rest of security
features.

I'd like to add that I have had this issue with gnome on karmic UNR
32bit and I am having it with karmic kubuntu 64bit. So perhaps this has
nothing to do with gnome-screensaver but something at a lower level? As
previous posters, I've been unable to figure out a pattern, this happens
sometimes. I am pretty concerned with this issue.

[Bug 498694] Re: sometimes resume from suspend doesn't ask for password, instead goes to straight to the desktop instead.

2010-04-03 Thread Jeenu V
I've faced this on and off. I don't know what triggers this behavior,
but once it started I think it stays until the system is rebooted (not
sure if rebooting solves this though). One more thing I've noticed
happening with this is that, the Lock screen from menu doesn't work -
I've to use Ctrl-Alt-L instead.

Also, when Ubuntu behaves normally, the Suspend sequence that I used see
was the screen going blank first, followed by HDD activity and then
going to sleep. Now, when I've this problem, I can see that my screen
stays active, and volume tray icon has x overlay (muted), and then the
screen goes blank followed by sleep. Later when I resume, it just
directly goes to my desktop without asking for password! (`ps` says
gnome-screensaver running)

I'll try out your suggestions Marc. It hasn't happen recently. I'm

It's not worth re-installing it.

When you return from suspend and the screen isn't locked, is the
