At least Gaim could set the default directory for choosing an avatar to /usr/share/pixmaps/faces/. This has been fixed for Pidgin 2.0.0. While it should be possible, it is not the sort of thing we react strongly in favor of upstream. We value our independance from gnome. If this icon can be pulled without linking against gnome (as the proxy settings or the browser stuff can be) then it is possible we would accept it in that form.
