do you have ubuntu-restricted-extras installed. if not then please install it but typing sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras and then try to play the media content you are trying to play. if this does not work then please tell us what is the encoding of the media file you are unable to play. If possible please provide a sample of the file.
