Also have an x86_64 system, and have the problem, and all my packages are up to date. This only happens by SIP calls, both incoming or outgoing. Still having the problem. I just wanted to mention, that this is not a i386 specific bug. Since you reported this bug there have been an update to empathy and also the telepathy framework has also been updated can you please update your system by sudo apt-get update ;sudo apt-get dist-upgrade and see if the problem still exists for you. Same here with using sip and empathy.
