[Bug 616718] Re: Choosing the default browser should also configure x-www-browser alternative

2010-09-02 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Sorry if the replies seems arrogant but x-www-browser is a debian
alternative and should not be visible to desktop users directly, the
debian alternative system is working for all users, ie you can't set a
different alternative for your user and an another one or the same
system where the GNOME dialog set by user settings and doesn't require
admin rights, there is no plan to change that though

If it has already been reported, would you mind marking it as a
duplicate of that bug?

[Bug 616718] Re: Choosing the default browser should also configure x-www-browser alternative

2010-09-01 Thread Captain Chaos
I'm sorry, but that's an incredibly unhelpful and arrogant attitude.

Users shouldn't be bothered with technical details. It should just work.
If they configure Firefox as their default browser, it should become
their default browser. It should not become the default browser only for
some of their programs.

And of course alternatives are a user setting! Are you really suggesting
that if some program installs itself with a higher priority so that a
user's favourite program is no longer started, they should just shut up
and take it? Of course not. They should be able to configure it.
