My understanding is that MPRIS is enabled in Totem only by the D-Bus Service plugin. However, I am closing it because the bug has been fixed in the latest development version of Ubuntu - Raring Ringtail. This is a significant bug in Ubuntu. I don't like to play with bug reports, but this bug is still present in quantal 12.10. According to GNOMEs bugzilla totem supports MPRIS2.1 since 3.2. So this bug should be fixed in precise+1. Btw: wouldn't it be better to just control the volume of all other non-musicplayer apps like in they're by the applications-tab in the sound-settings.
