@Alan: adding your user to group 'disk' essentially means that you are working 
as root, so every program that you run can potentially tamper with your whole 
system (see my previous comment).

I have no idea about kino itself, but it should be fixed to use /dev/video1394.

Once I added the user to 'disk' group, Kino was able to import video. This is a 
single (human) user laptop. What are the security implications of allowing this?

Or, is there a way to force Kino to use /dev/video1394 instead?
