Try doing backspace some times, maybe there's a space or some characters in the search quiery, which makes all contact display. I have the same problem in Natty. Pressing Ctrl+H or using the menu has no result (except the check sign toggling next to the menu item). Offline contacts remain in view no matter the setting. I can hide the offline contacts from the menu or with ctrl+h. However, the setting doesn't save when I exit. This is a big enough annoyance to make me switch back to pidgin. I'm using version: 2.32.0.1-1+ppa10.10+1 and have the same problem: I can't hide offline contacts after today's dist-upgrade. And yes I tried pressing Ctrl-h or using the view menu.
