2009-11-11 Thread Przemysław Kulczycki
I think this bug should also have a Grub task, since most probably it
will be Grub's responsibility to check the kernel's version and boot the
correct kernel to not lose the hibernated state.

[Bug 76424] Re: Kernel upgrades without reboot break resume from hibernation

2009-05-01 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
The Red Hat bug is somewhat different as I believe they keep more old
kernels around than Ubuntu. A broken resume from hibernate rarely
results in complete data loss as the kernel buffers are usually flushed
before the computer is hibernated. It's about as bad as doing as
resetting after having run sync and having watied for it to finish.

You're assuming the user has attempted to save before hand. Data in
memory that hasn't been written to disk is gone.

It's also been filed against redhat.
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=451266

Since it's pretty easy to have a complete loss of data, shouldn't this
be a significantly higher importance?

[Bug 76424] Re: Kernel upgrades without reboot break resume from hibernation

2009-04-30 Thread Jeremy Nickurak
Certainly when a system automatically hibernates because its power
source is depleted, and then resumes when the power is restored, if
there has been a new kernel update, the system will boot the wrong
kernel, and consequently lose all data in the running system.

[Bug 76424] Re: Kernel upgrades without reboot break resume from hibernation

2008-12-06 Thread Jeremy Nickurak
Problem persists in intrepid. Seems to be the best of all possible options is:
1) Whenever you hibernate, save a copy of the grub menu.lst to a backup location
2) Change menu.lst to boot the currently running kernel by default, with a
label simply reading Resume from Hibernation.
3) If possible, add a warning message to the grub menu that booting any other
option will result in a loss of the hibernated state
4) On resume from hibernation, restore the backup menu.lst from step 1.

[Bug 76424] Re: Kernel upgrades without reboot break resume from hibernation

2008-08-28 Thread Leann Ogasawara
The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.
There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-
image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and
test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer
2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4.
Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced.
You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the
bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please
open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the
2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please
specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26
kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

[Bug 76424] Re: Kernel upgrades without reboot break resume from hibernation

2008-07-21 Thread Nikolaus Rath
I'm adding hal as affected as well. According to comment 21, the
behaviour could also be fixed by applying the patch included in the
comment.

Fixing this bug *somewhere* should really be possible now.

** Summary changed:

- Hibernation uses old kernel after kernel upgrade causing resume failure
+ Kernel upgrades without reboot break resume from hibernation

** Description changed:

  1) Apply kernel update (but don't immediately reboot, as you're working)
  2) have to move somewhere, hibernate laptop
  3) power on laptop to restore from hibernate
- 4) look at the login screen, not your resumed desktop.
+ 4) since the hibernated image does not correspond to the current kernel
version, the image will be discarded and a regular boot is done

- proposed fix: boot old kernel if hibernate exists.
+ Result: All data that hasn't been saved is lost, filesystems can be
+ corrupted and need fsck. In severity this corresponds to a hard system
+ crash.
+
+ proposed fix: boot old kernel if hibernate exists or prevent hibernation
+ when a new kernel version has been installed.
