After more than 6 months of waiting I reinstalled ubuntu, which fixed the problem. As I said, every pdf caused it, but I can obviously no longer reproduce the bug. I can reproduce this only on one machine, but with any pdf. I tried running it w/ gdb, but gdb complains: warning: the debug information found in /usr/lib/debug/usr/bin/evince does not match /usr/bin/evince (CRC mismatch).
