This seems to be resolved now. There is no longer problem with increasing the volume on keyboard, also the OSD works. This puzzles me, I don't know where could have been the problem? The sound can be muted anyway. I should add I am using asus laptop. Soundcard is HDA NVidia (Alsa mixer) and as a track to be controlled via keyboard is selected PCM. Now, there is another problem. Today I tried it again and there is no OSD showing the volume level while adjusting the volume on keyboard.
