This is still an issue with Trusty (14.04.3). I have found that the controls do not show up when using the trackpad, but do work if you swipe on a touch screen. according to upstream this won't be fixed properly until totem's controls are re-written in clutter which is a work in process. Allesandro, I've replicated this on a multiple clean precise installs, as well as clean installs of other distros (fedora/arch). There is bug reports for this on fedora's tracker as well. I would like to join the issue. I have no problem with my regular usb wireless mouse which is working the way as expected but with my touchpoint (Lenovo R61i). It's by default configured in the /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/11-evdev-trackpoint.conf file. My touchpoint behaves exactly the same way as described in the first post.
