[Bug 917767] Re: New control features are not automatically added to system settings

2012-01-18 Thread Sebastien Bacher
than a .desktop is needed in order to integrate into the menu when
there just needs to be an icon

well that's sort of what we distro patch in Ubuntu currently, click on
software-properties in Oneiric for example or language selector...

Is there a mailing list or some channel like that discussing the
development of the gnome-control-panel ?

upstream list: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnomecc-list/

You might want to read the discussion on http://mail.gnome.org/archives
/desktop-devel-list/2011-May/msg00095.html on the topic as well

2012-01-17 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for your bug report, that's not a bug, the new control-center
is an integrated set and not a grid of launcher, capplets need to be
properly integrated. There are bugs for letting the display capplet call
the nvidia tool and adding common unity options to the user interface
capplet

the one was a grid of icon launching standalone applications that were
different programs, looking different and behaving differently, the new
version has controls embedded in its ui and respecting a consistent look

[Bug 917767] Re: New control features are not automatically added to system settings

2012-01-17 Thread Petko Ditchev
Than you for your answers . I did some more searching (as to where to
address my vision of why it is so wrong to have things that way) , and
found out that you are one of the developers . So I'm thinking of how to
emphasize it more , but I'll just say it - it's important to have a more
flexible system (as a grid of icons launching standalone apps) , because
the linux environment is user developed , and special integration into
capplets , or whichever other complications you may introduce , Will
mean that some applications will never appear in the system menu , and
others will take their time . I know that having a unified design is
important , but I'm pretty sure it's one step under functionality . One
can have unified design for standalone apps - no problem ,therefore I
don't see why the System settings menu had to get locked .

I know it's not the biggest problem in the universe ,but it's the first
time I stumble upon a regression in development for ubuntu , and I
didn't think that happens much in the linux world . That's why I'm keen
to see if one (I in this case) can make a difference for the better in
the development .

[Bug 917767] Re: New control features are not automatically added to system settings

2012-01-17 Thread Sebastien Bacher
This dialog is the system settings, it's not supposed to be random
applications you install, so the need to add external components is
limited

Note that our version of the control center allows external components
to add icons (the backup icon for example is built from a different
source) so it's not locked (upstream disagrees with that and dropped
the integration library but that's another story, we keep it for Ubunu),
the main difference is that other components can't simply add a simple
.desktop but have actually to make some efforts to get their dialog
showing nicely in the ui.

[Bug 917767] Re: New control features are not automatically added to system settings

2012-01-17 Thread Petko Ditchev
Well CCSM and Nvidia control panel , and a bunch of other applications
aren't at all random , but external control centers to system components
. And yes - the menu is not locked ,but the integration with it is
needlessly complicated . What more than a .desktop is needed in order to
integrate into the menu when there just needs to be an icon . Yes , it
would be great to have all the options of Nvidia fully integrated into
the corresponding menus , but that's just not going to happen . People
are writing standalone apps for linux and not integrations to specific
distros . Is there a mailing list or some channel like that discussing
the development of the gnome-control-panel ?
