Till -- I installed the packages in -proposed, into my Intrepid machine as requested, undid the work around I described on 01/18 (above) and restarted CUPS. The printer produces correct output. I then used HPLIP to first delete and then install a new instance of my printer. That too produces correct output. Apparent success! Thank you again for your assistance. There may be another work around:
Open the file:
/etc/cups/ppd/{nameofdriverfile}.ppd
with a root-permissioned text editor. About line number 70, in the
section named Basic Device Capabilities, find the line that reads:
*LanguageLevel: 3
and change the 3 to 2. Save and restart CUPS:
sudo /etc/init.d/cups restart
and test. This work-around mitigates the problem on both Intrepid and
Jaunty 64-bit installations.
