[Bug 796465] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV
** Description changed: Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon This crash in gnome-settings-daemon 3.0.2-1ubuntu3 occurred twice (nearly identical, not very informative stack traces) in succession after logging in to a recently updated unity-2d session on an Oneiric i386 system. I think this crash may have occurred before the updates (if so, I don't think I reported it then). My other Oneiric i386 system, installed on identical (virtual) hardware and also fully updated, does not appear to be affected by this bug. This might be bug 788710. I was able to produce that bug on this same system, by running gnome-settings-daemon in a Terminal after the two instances of this crash. (I'll post in that bug with more details about the possible connection.) But I suspect they are not really the same bug, because they both occurred in the same session without any package management operations performed in between them, yet the stack trace in this bug is much worse. - This also looks a bit like bug 779878. I haven't yet compared the stack - traces. + This bug looks cursorily similar to bug 779878, since they are both + SIGSEGV crashes in gnome-settings-daemon with no function name (and thus + have the same apport-generated title). Since bug 779878's stack trace + has no symbol names or addresses and this stack trace has only the + address where the segfault occurred and no other information, they + cannot really be compared. Since there are no positive similarities + besides occurring spontaneously (other than that, all the similarities + between the two bugs are in the information that is *not* available + about them), and bug 779878 occurred in Maverick while this bug occurred + in Oneiric, I doubt they are the same bug. + + Due to stack corruption, the stack trace here is very bad--hopefully + Apport retracing service will be able to process it and the core dump, + and yield better information. [Bug 792735] Re: Language selection at login overrides language selection via env LANG
Thank you for your reply, Gunnar. Sorry it has taken me so long to reply. I set up Lucid and Natty on a virtual machine and ran a few more additional tests. Also, after reading through the Language Support help document and the previous discussion at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm/+bug/553162 I now have a much better understanding of how language preferences are set on Ubuntu, and how those settings have changed over time. As I understand it, until a while ago, when selecting a certain language at login through GDM, this would change all language-related variables (i.e. $LANG and all $LC_* variables), which means that the display language as well as regional formats were altered. The change you (@Gunnar) have introduced only changes the display language and leaves regional formats unchanged, so you can run an US English language- session of Ubuntu which displays date, time and currency values in the Swedish format, for example. You have achieved this by setting the $LANGUAGE and $LC_MESSAGES variables to the selected language, but leaving the other $LC_* variables unchanged, which thus retain the setting from gnome-language-selector - Text. Hence, setting $LANGUAGE and $LC_MESSAGES on a per-programme basis allows a user to run programmes in a different language, e.g. env LC_MESSAGES=en_US.UTF-8 firefox env LANGUAGE=en gedit If I understand correctly, env LANG used to work on earlier Ubuntu versions because $LANGUAGE still wasn't being used then. Under those circumstances, altering $LANG would change a programme's language. To achieve the same behaviour on Natty, $LANGUAGE needs to be unset: unset LANGUAGE; env LANG=en_US.UTF-8 gedit While changes you have applied appear logical to me, I am wondering if this is in line with how most applications handle language settings? What I mean is, are you sure all programmes either use $LANGUAGE or $LC_MESSAGES to determine their display language? Are there applications which look at other variables, e.g. $LANG, to determine their display language? Are such problems to be expected on the user's side? Ironically, both commands you suggested above (env LANGUAGE and env LC_MESSAGES) also work for me now. Not sure if I did anything wrong before, but it seems this bug report is invalid. I'll track this issue for a few more days and, if no illogical behaviour appears again, mark the bug as invalid. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/792735 Title: Language selection at login overrides language selection via env LANG To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm/+bug/792735/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 788710] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV in exit()
With gnome-settings-daemon 3.0.2-1ubuntu3 (and possibly earlier versions, I haven't tried), this bug appears to be reliably producible by launching a second concurrent instance of gnome-settings-daemon (i.e., running it when it's already running). I have gotten this to happen on two separate, similarly configured Oneiric i386 systems in unity-2d sessions by running gnome-settings-daemon in Terminal windows. While gnome-settings-daemon needn't support multiple instances, a second instance of gnome-settings-daemon should gracefully exit--it should not segfault (and in any case, there may well be other situations where this crash occurs). On one of the Oneiric i386 systems, I was able to produce a better stack trace. I have reported that crash as duplicate bug 796497. Are others able to reliably reproduce this crash the same way? If so, we can edit the bug's description to include it as an easy way to make the crash happen. ek@Nyaa:~$ gnome-settings-daemon ** (gnome-settings-daemon:1932): WARNING **: You can only run one xsettings manager at a time; exiting ** (gnome-settings-daemon:1932): WARNING **: Unable to start xsettings manager: Could not initialize xsettings manager. ** (gnome-settings-daemon:1932): WARNING **: Name taken or bus went away - shutting down Segmentation fault (core dumped) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/788710 Title: gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV in exit() To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/788710/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 796465] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV
** Description changed: Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon This crash in gnome-settings-daemon 3.0.2-1ubuntu3 occurred twice (nearly identical, not very informative stack traces) in succession - after logging in to a recently updated unity-2d session on an Oneiric + after logging in to a unity-2d session on a recently updated Oneiric i386 system. But I suspect they are not really the same bug, because they both occurred in the same session without any package management operations performed in between them, yet the stack trace in this bug is much worse. Furthermore, right now it looks like the crash in bug 788710 occurs whenever a second concurrent instance of gnome- settings-daemon is launched (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings- daemon/+bug/788710/comments/15, and also bug 796497, which is a duplicate of bug 788710). This bug looks cursorily similar to bug 779878, since they are both SIGSEGV crashes in gnome-settings-daemon with no function name (and thus have the same apport-generated title). Since bug 779878's stack trace has no symbol names or addresses and this stack trace has only the address where the segfault occurred and no other information, they cannot really be compared. Since there are no positive similarities besides occurring spontaneously (other than that, all the similarities between the two bugs are in the information that is *not* available about them), and bug 779878 occurred in Maverick while this bug occurred in Oneiric, I doubt they are the same bug. Due to stack corruption, the stack trace here is very bad--hopefully Apport retracing service will be able to process it and the core dump, and yield better information. [Bug 795951] Re: Brasero shuts down as soon as select burn speed
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. Now open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the crash report you wish to submit. If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with 'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'. [Bug 796679] [NEW] Places menu entries not fully integrated
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: brasero When I do a file operation (Open, etc.), I can see no bookmark entries ('Places') for remote locations (FTP, SMP, etc.) in the file dialog. Also, the (gvfs-) connected servers are also not shown on the left in this dialog. This problems happens with a lot of applications, so maybe it's better to solve this in the GNOME-framework, by showing the Places entries by default. ** Affects: brasero (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to brasero in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/796679 Title: Places menu entries not fully integrated To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/brasero/+bug/796679/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 771896] Re: No way to save current session
One of these days I want to try to revert Didier's patches on gnome- session to see if I can fix this. I've switched to Linux Mint, but they've inherited this same bug in their latest version based on natty (11). I'm a bit confused with those session management work items.
