[Bug 192629] Re: Cannot send files to trashcan from an ntfs partition

2008-05-17 Thread aaron
I have seen this bug in a few places and I have not found a simple
solution to post in the Ubuntu forums. I am having. the same problem. I
understand how to edit the fstab entries. But before I post a reply to
this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=774426 in the
Ubuntu forums, I would like to make sure that I have the fix correct and
easy enough to follow for just about every body.

You need to determine the partition and device that contain the ntfs partition.
 #sudo fdisk -l
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdb1 1 60801 4883840017 HPFS/NTFS
You then need to open the fstab file in /etc/fstab and add and entry to mount
the ntfs partition with the correct mount options to ensure that it is mounted
as the correct user.
First create the directory to mount the ntfs partition to.
sudo mkdir /media/[myntfs_part]
#gksudo gedit /etc/fstab
then add the following lines to the fstab file.
/dev/sdb1 /media/[myntfs_part] ntfs defaults,umask=007,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 1

Is this the correct solution. I am not sure if I should use the /media
directory or the /mnt directory. What is the standard. I see Rocko using
/c.

I also feel that the user should always have the default option of
sending data to the trash directory even if it is insecure. The average
every day desktop user is not interested in performing all the above
steps just to be able to have files got to a trash can. If it is a
security risk the the user should be told this in the delete prompt as a
warning. Only having a permanently delete option as has been stated will
cause some frustration when people realise later that they can't get
their files back.

If Ubuntu is designed as an average every day desktop system the
security risk when heaving a multi-user work station would mean that it
has already gone to beyond the average every day desktop system where in
the majority of cases only a single person uses a computer. On a multi-
user work station the user should be told that their files, when deleted
and moved to trash will be available to other users on the system. Josh
Smith and Rocko have made this point quite well.

2.6.24-17-generic #1 SMP i686 GNU/Linux
Ubuntu Hardy

[Bug 222429] [NEW] evolution can't import or send mails with Content-Type: format=flowed correctly

2008-04-26 Thread Aaron
Public bug reported:

Hi I'm using GNOME evolution 2.22.1 on ubuntu 8.04

There are two problems with 'Content-Type: format=flowed' in headers:
*If you want to import a mbox-file from eg. Thunderbird all lines are wrapped
as they are in the mbox-file. Evolution doesn't recognize whether there's a
format=flowed in the header by Content-Type.
*If you want to send flowed text you have to send html messages. There is no
comfortable way to send flowed text mails as plain text.

[Bug 344060] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV in _XiGetDevicePresenceNotifyEvent()

2009-06-25 Thread aaron
Hi all, I have a similar problem under vnc, the gnome theme is messed up and if
I open the appearance window, it will crash session. The following work around
works for me:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/199245
by disabling keyboard plugin with gconf-editor at
/apps/gnome_settings_daemon/plugins/keyboard.
The same happens under fedora 11 too and the workaround also works for fedora
11.

[Bug 402097] [NEW] Shuffle always starts with the same song

2009-07-21 Thread Aaron
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

If you set the play mode to shuffle, then every time you start playing a
playlist it will begin playing the same song. To reproduce this bug,
enable shuffling and start playing a playlist. Pause playback, then
begin playing another playlist. Pause playback once more, return to the
original playlist (making sure to deselect all in the song list) and
begin playing that playlist again. You will notice that the same song as
before begins playing. However, all subsequent songs have a different
order.

[Bug 403389] [NEW] Dragging songs to rearrange within a playlist has major scrolling issues

2009-07-23 Thread Aaron
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

If you have a playlist that's long enough to have scroll bars, dragging
songs to rearrange them has a few major issues. To reproduce this bug,
do the following.

1. Create a playlist long enough to have scroll bars. The longer the better.
2. Pick a song close to the bottom of the list and start dragging.

When you start dragging, the list will suddenly jump up near the top. If
you move the mouse down to the bottom of the window, the list will not
scroll. However, it does scroll correctly if you move the mouse near the
top of the window.

[Bug 76449] Re: Cannot sort static playlists

2009-07-23 Thread Aaron
I'd really like to see this bug fixed. Oftentimes if you drag songs into
a playlist, it will end up getting out of order. (especially if you do a
drag selection) If sorting were implemented, you could simply click the
track column and be done with it, but instead you have to tediously
drag each song into place. And since there's also a bug with dragging
songs in long playlists
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox/+bug/403389) it can
get very difficult indeed... _ This is a very basic functionality and
should be implemented in any serious program that includes a list view.
The fact that this has been an open bug for 2.5 years is very sad IMO.

[Bug 214370] Re: Logout/Shutdown Sound Not Working

2011-05-27 Thread aaron
This does seem to be more gnome-based, as kde and such have sounds just
fine.

I agree with Comment #77. This is a bug report because it seems like
something is wrong with the system when it can't play system sounds, and
every other OS (you know, those other 2...) does. Yes. Micro$oft's and
Appl€ 's OS's play shutdown sounds. And startup sounds. And why
shouldn't the worlds most configurable operating system (that's linux,
btw) allow us to configure audible notifications?

Not fixed. I get 5~ and ;5~ for ctrl-pgup and ctrl-pgdn, when using the

when using the dedicated keys (pgup and pgdown).

[Bug 505757] [NEW] podcasts fail 1. ignores wgetrc, 2. ignores specified podcast directory

2010-01-10 Thread aaron
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Podcast support is a bit flakey. If it's using wget (assuming?) it's
ignoring the wgetrc file. I am trying to download onto an SMB share,
but that requires restricting file names via restrict_file_names=windows
in /etc/wgetrc. Even with this, rhythmbox gets stuck downloading
because there is an invalid character in the temp filename.

This shouldn't be reported as waiting but rather an error.

Which brings me to my next point. Why can I not see the error from within
rhythmbox??? I needed to manually run wget in order to figure out why podcasts
were failing. This is not at all obvious.

Next problem with podcasts: the UI totally ignores the podcast directory
and resets it back to the home directory. It also gives no error message
when you try to set it to something like an SMB share. And yet this
clearly doesn't work...

ubuntu 9.10, plain vanilla install.

[Bug 505757] Re: podcasts fail 1. ignores wgetrc, 2. ignores specified podcast directory

2010-01-11 Thread aaron
The real problem: it would appear that however the downloads are being
handled, they are not being handled in a way that restricts invalid
filename characters. Big problem if you're going from a *nix source to
a ntfs or vfat target.

[Bug 465751] [NEW] firefox does not recognize network shares

2009-10-30 Thread Aaron
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

Ubuntu 9.10, basic installation, no changes

Firefox cannot save to a network share. I successfully connect to the
share through Places - Network first to establish the connection, so
it's not a general connectivity issue.

A workaround equivalent to Windows drive mapping would be acceptable,
but my major apps must be able to work with my file server if I am to
ever switch over.

This has been an issue in previous versions of Ubuntu as well. I have
just been too distracted and busy to post them. It was the first thing

2012-02-02 Thread Aaron
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 780117 ***

I hate Brasero; it consistently screws me. I gave it one more chance
last night and it screwed me again. The program inexplicably crashes
SOMETIMES when I attempt to remove a file from the project, and when I
burned my data DVD it made it all the way to the end, did the unable to
eject disc error, then delivered me a nice shiny coaster. Bollocks to
that.

I'm with the others suggesting K3B. Can we make THAT the default package
for future Ubuntu versions?

[Bug 1125011] Re: screen save still active after being disabled

2013-02-14 Thread aaron
** Description changed:

On a remote machine, no keyboard or mouse connected. Set up to auto
login and start a browser in kiosk mode as a monitoring dash board for
  our office.

The only way to enable this to run for the whole day is to connect a
keyboard and break out of the screen save when it first runs. After that
it will not go into the screen saver for the rest of the day.

[Bug 1125011] Re: screen save still active after being disabled

2013-02-14 Thread aaron
Tried all of these settings none of them worked. I am going to try down
grading the kernel from
uname -a
Linux monitor-dash 3.5.0-23-generic #35~precise1-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 25 17:15:33
UTC 2013 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

Going to try these changes in dconf to see which setting is causing the
issue.

http://askubuntu.com/questions/207131/screensaver-blanking-problem
http://askubuntu.com/questions/67355/how-do-i-completely-turn-off-screensaver-and-power-management

dconf dump / | grep lock
lock-screensaver-on-audio=false

ubuntu-lock-on-suspend=false
numlock-state='on'
xtech@monitor-dash:~$ dconf dump / | grep power

idle-activation-enabled=false
idle-delay=uint32 0
xtech@monitor-dash:~$ dconf dump / | grep timeout
xtech@monitor-dash:~$ dconf dump / | grep battery

tried these settings with xset
http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=13990

xset s 0
xset s noexpose
xset s noblank
xset -dpms

Have installed caffeine to try and fix this problem.

[Bug 1125011] Re: screen save still active after being disabled

2013-02-14 Thread aaron
This is possibly a duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1046118

I have updated to all the latest version of unity, lightdm, gdm settings,
kernel.
This was still causing issues.

Downgraded kernel from
uname -a
Linux 3.5.0-23-generic #35~precise1-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 25 17:15:33 UTC 2013
i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

To the latest generic which has fixed this issue. I am going to add this
bug to the Linux 3.5.0-23 bug profile.

uname -srvpio
Linux 3.2.0-37-generic-pae #58-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jan 24 15:51:02 UTC 2013 i686

[Bug 1396378] Re: evince does not follow Xubuntu scroll direction

2016-12-20 Thread Aaron
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1368402 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1368402

For me, all applications (chromium, gnucash, perhaps a couple others)
scroll in a certain way: when I put two fingers on the touch pad and go
up, they scroll up. Evince does the opposite, and it is the only
application I have found that does that.

This is marked as a duplicate of another issue that speaks of "all gtk3
apps", but for me, evince is the only one acting differently from the
others. I don't know which way is "natural scrolling", but perhaps
Evince has "fixed" the problem where it doesn't "naturally scroll" by
always naturally scrolling regardless of other settings?

[Bug 1815550] Re: gnome-shell high memory and CPU usage when desktop files are constantly created or deleted

2019-05-12 Thread Aaron
Can confirm this bug also affects me.

`gnome-shell` is currently consistently the top program in `top` --
~5454092 (Virt) / 2.4g (Res) 15.2% Mem

Other behaviors I've noticed:

 - Nautilus is slow at times
 - When browsing the filesystem from a web browser (ie. attaching a file, or
any "file dialog" moments), selecting the file causes it to hang for 5-10s

Did not have any of these problems with 18.10.

Some system-specific details:
 - I use an NVidia card (v418.56 of drivers, GTX 960 card)
 - Steam is running (I saw a few other people mention it; don't know if this
would be salient or not)
 - I had to disable Wayland so that my system would boot correctly (This seems
to be an NVidia thing)

[Bug 1979818] [NEW] Right-click context menu jumps when dock auto-hides

2022-06-24 Thread Aaron
Public bug reported:

Repro:

  1. Set dock to auto-hide, tacked to the bottom.
  2. Hover mouse at bottom to show the dock.
  3. Right click on one icon, intending to perform some task within the context
menu
  4. Move mouse to desired task but don't click
  5. The dock will autohide and cause the context menu to drop down by enough
pixels that what you intended to click on is no longer behind where the mouse
cursor is.

What I expect is for the context menu not to move, even if the dock
hides, until I click somewhere (either in the context menu or outside of
it)

2022-08-29 Thread Aaron
> Don't be alarmed by that. Those two limits are correct and normal

Fair enough. I only mentioned it because I noted that the -l flag
allowed the process to complete.

Sadly I have nothing in /var/crash. I see a couple of gnome-shell
reports on errors.ubuntu.com but they are from back in March this year.

To be honest, I'm not sure how long this has been going on for. It could
have been years. I just happened to notice and be in the mood to do
something about it today.

[Bug 1988100] Re: Video thumbnails fail to generate

2022-08-29 Thread Aaron
If I run it as root it runs for a few seconds and responds "Killed"

But; something suspicious is happening because I just went to check the
exact output and I got this:

$ sudo totem-video-thumbnailer -v sample.mp4 sample.png
TotemVideoThumbnailer-Message: 17:38:03.906: Initialised libraries, about to
create video widget
TotemVideoThumbnailer-Message: 17:38:03.908: setting URI

OpenBLAS blas_thread_init: pthread_create failed for thread 7 of 16: Resource
temporarily unavailable

So I am a liar now. But this works:

$ sudo totem-video-thumbnailer -vl sample.mp4 sample.png

[Bug 63544] Re: Volume control key controls speaker not headphones

2007-08-24 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
*Sigh*... the joys of free software. Again, something doesn't work
properly and the bug gets marked as invalid because one can manually
fix it.

The current behaviour (in Gutsy Tribe 5) is unexpected and unintuitive.
That means that there *is* a bug, we just have to figure out the best
solution to the problem and file the appropriate upstream bugs that will
result in this being fixed.

I propose that we file an upstream to have the volume hotkeys control
both Master and Headphones by default. That seems the intuitive thing
for them to control. People that want to change that to get more
control are likely to be a small percentage of advanced users and these
users are likely to be able to find the ability in Sound Preferences.

[Bug 134745] Metacity Dialogs appear and lock up the system.

2007-08-25 Thread Aaron Gerber
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

Since I upgraded to gutsy the following occurs: everytime a metacity
dialog is started, it locks up gnome. I can't CTL-ALT-DELETE to restart
X, I can't do anything graphically. To get my system back, I have to
ssh in and kill the process. Below is what I get from ps aux | grep
metacity-dialog. As soon as I kill the process everything comes back to
life.

[Bug 135182] [Gutsy] lose changes in last x mins confusing if the user has never saved

2007-08-27 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

I am using Gutsy Tribe 5.

I like the new message warning the user how long it has been since they
last saved the document. I think that it is very confusing, however, if
they user has never saved at all.

Saying that the user will lose all changes in the last 30 minutes
implies that there are other changes that will not be lost (prior to 30
mins ago).

The message should stay as it currently is for all documents that have been
saved, but Untitled windows (and any windows where the user hasn't saved since
opening the file) should read:
All changes to this file will be lost

Re: [Bug 134745] Re: Metacity Dialogs appear and lock up the system.

2007-08-27 Thread Aaron Gerber
As it is a dialog from metacity, it only opens a dialog when it needs
feedback about something. I've tried running
/usr/lib/metacity/metacity-dialog [OPTIONS] and there are no options
that I can give it to make it run, it just says I give it bad
arguments. So have a debugger can't really help.

Re: [Bug 134745] Re: Metacity Dialogs appear and lock up the system.

2007-08-31 Thread Aaron Gerber
No, I've been trying to track down when metacity-dialog gets called, but
I guess I don't really understand metacity dialogs. I understand when
thunderbird or firefox would open a dialog box, but I don't really
understand why metacity would open a dialog. Some of the arguments give
an indication of why the metacity dialog gets called
--kill-window-question [SOME PROGRAM] With that said, I'm not sure why
that would be called. Is it because the underlying program not
responding? Sometimes it has to do with gthumb, sometimes firefox,
sometimes nautilus, etc. So I guess that's a long answer to a short
question, no I don't have any steps that could trigger the bug, I've
been trying to find a pattern, but as of yet, I haven't found one.

Re: [Bug 134745] Re: Metacity Dialogs appear and lock up the system.

2007-09-01 Thread Aaron Gerber
After I wrote my last email about not being able to have easy steps to
trigger the bug, it left me thinking. I thought more about what I had
rambled about previously and why a metacity dialog would be triggered.
My guess had been that it was caused by a Not Responding dialog. Well
it turns out, that's exactly what is going on.

TRIGGER
If you open up the terminal and start any program (ex:
gnome-calculator), suspend it (Ctl+Z) and then try to close the window
as you would normally (via the metacity widget).
/TRIGGER

It should bring up a dialog that says This application isn't
responding, do you want to kill the application. Turns out, my system
never gets that far. I've never seen that dialog since I upgraded to
Gutsy. Instead of showing the dialog, it just hangs until I ssh in and
kill the process (ex: /usr/lib/metacity/metacity-dialog --screen 0
--timestamp 3288704419 --kill-window-question Calculator 0x2c3).

2006-07-06 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
I have fixed this. The sound in question can be turned off under Login

I realise now that this is because these sounds are system-wide and not
a user preference. This is *not*, however, an intuitive place to find
the setting.

Could a System Sounds link of some kind be placed in the Preferences

[Bug 52088] Need an easy way to calibrate joysticks

2006-07-06 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Public bug reported:

Using Dapper, fully updated.

We have a few joysticks here and, for some reason, they are not
calibrated correctly. In Windows I am able to make these usable by using
the calibration tool in Game Controllers.

There does not seem to be a comparable tool in Ubuntu which renders the
joystick fairly useless.

I have tried the packages joystick and jscalibrator but neither fix
it; joystick is very difficult to use and jscalibrator is easy to use
but doesn't seem to work perfectly. A tool more integrated into Gnome
would be excellent.

2006-07-18 Thread Aaron Isotton
I have the same or a very similar problem. Whenever gnome-power-manager
starts up, it displays the correct status, but then it just stays there
and never updates (not in case of plug/unplug, neither in case of
charging/discharging).

If I do a 'killall gnome-power-manager; gnome-power-manager' the status
is updated (and stays there). To me this looks as if gnome-power-manager
were hanging somewhere.

[Bug 35858] Re: The notification icon is not updated

2006-07-18 Thread Aaron Isotton
Ah, I forgot to say that it worked on dapper. It stopped working on
edgy. I am currently running gnome-power-manager 2.14.3-0ubuntu11.

Off-Topic: this malone bug tracker is the worst piece of crap I've ever
used. Even Bugzilla is better, and when I compare it to the wonderful
greatness of the Debian BTS I just feel sick. No need to register to
report a bug! Automated version reporting! Searching which works! Oh
Ubuntu.

[Bug 43736] Re: Can't burn ISO images on smb network shares

2006-07-19 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Could we cache the iso locally if the user had sufficient space?

Perhaps a message box saying
Burning a disc over a network can cause problems when the network cannot keep
up with your writer. Would you like to copy the disc image to your computer
before you burn it?

We could offer the user a Yes/No/Cancel.
- Yes would copy it to /tmp and start the burn;
- No would try to burn it over the network; and
- Cancel would cancel.

[Bug 53498] Mounted drives are missing in the iso save dialogue

2006-07-21 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Public bug reported:

Using Dapper - fully updated.

Steps:
1) Insert CD
2) Right-click and select Copy Disc
3) Choose file image and click ok
4) In the save dialogue, the Places (e.g. other partitions) are missing.

One can still save to the partitions by going through Filesystem to
the /media directory, but it is inconsistent with all other save
dialogues.

[Bug 54306] SFTP is horrendously slow in Nautilus.

2006-07-27 Thread Aaron Gyes
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Browsing an sftp share in nautilus is rediculously slow. I am
confident the issue is in nautilus and not with gnome-vfs, it's
lightening fast in filechoosrs and similar.

The entire UI will lock up for ten to fifteen seconds each time I
change into another directory, and then stay that way for a while after
the icons get painted.

[Bug 54764] RFE: Handling of stitched images

2006-08-01 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Public bug reported:

I own a Canon PowerShot A85 camera and am using gthumb on Dapper.

I have taken some photos in Stitched mode. This keeps a bit of the
previous picture on the screen so that one can take multiple photos that
line up into one long photo.

If I use the proprietary software in Windows, the following happens:
1) The photos are imported
2) The fact that I have taken photos in this mode is detected by the software
and I am taken into a Stitching programme. This may be done off filenames as
I cannot immediately see any tags about it.
3) The software automatically attempts to overlay the photos in the correct
places and produces a chain of photos.
4) A square is drawn around the photos to give the biggest possible connected
photo (when using this mode, one often slips up or down and this cuts off the
bits either side).

For most photos, this is all automatic and merely requires the user to
confirm things.

I would love to see this feature implemented in gthumb - it would give
the feature to all cameras, not just mine. I realise that it is a lot of
work and suggest that perhaps it could be done as follows:

1) Create a sub-programme to work with the photos manually. This would probably
need the ability to manually move the photos around and the ability to draw a
square to create one photo from them.
2) Create an option to select some photos and open the programme in (1). This
would mean that the user could manually select photos to be stitched and
somehow select Stitch these Photos.
3) Try to automate the process of lining the photos up by matching similar
regions and the process of drawing a square around the combined picture.
4) Try to detect sets of stitched photos - this is likely camera specific. If
all the above is done, this could be implemented camera-by-camera with the
owners of unsupported cameras keeping to the manual method.
5) Perhaps a dialogue could be displayed after importing asking whether or not
the user would like to enter the stitching programme. The detected sets could
be displayed as a list of small pictures on one side.

Note that I have also requested this functionality in f-spot as Bug
#54762

[Bug 58962] User-specific: Gnome file dialogs crash every time

2006-09-04 Thread Aaron Peromsik
Public bug reported:

On one of my home machines this crash affects my wife's account but not
mine. Any application which uses GNOME file dialogs will crash when she
accesses a file dialog -- open or save. Observed with gnome, gaim, gimp,
openoffice.org. Workaround for the last one is to use OOO's own file
dialogs, but for native GNOME applications it's not that simple. We did
come up with the workaround of launching a VNC session in which she has
an xterm and metacity and gimp, but nothing else-- and in there GIMP
works fine with the file dialogs.

Possibly related to 53355, but much more widespread than just firefox.
Also we use regular Ubuntu Dapper, not kubuntu. The latest dapper
updates have been applied... for example gtk+20 package version is
2.8.20-0ubuntu1.

Traceback from gdb session in which I (using my wife's account) launched
gedit and picked Open:
