[Bug 192629] Re: Cannot send files to trashcan from an ntfs partition
I have seen this bug in a few places and I have not found a simple solution to post in the Ubuntu forums. I am having. the same problem. I understand how to edit the fstab entries. But before I post a reply to this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=774426 in the Ubuntu forums, I would like to make sure that I have the fix correct and easy enough to follow for just about every body. You need to determine the partition and device that contain the ntfs partition. #sudo fdisk -l Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdb1 1 60801 4883840017 HPFS/NTFS You then need to open the fstab file in /etc/fstab and add and entry to mount the ntfs partition with the correct mount options to ensure that it is mounted as the correct user. First create the directory to mount the ntfs partition to. sudo mkdir /media/[myntfs_part] #gksudo gedit /etc/fstab then add the following lines to the fstab file. /dev/sdb1 /media/[myntfs_part] ntfs defaults,umask=007,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 1 Is this the correct solution. I am not sure if I should use the /media directory or the /mnt directory. What is the standard. I see Rocko using /c. I also feel that the user should always have the default option of sending data to the trash directory even if it is insecure. The average every day desktop user is not interested in performing all the above steps just to be able to have files got to a trash can. If it is a security risk the the user should be told this in the delete prompt as a warning. Only having a permanently delete option as has been stated will cause some frustration when people realise later that they can't get their files back. If Ubuntu is designed as an average every day desktop system the security risk when heaving a multi-user work station would mean that it has already gone to beyond the average every day desktop system where in the majority of cases only a single person uses a computer. On a multi- user work station the user should be told that their files, when deleted and moved to trash will be available to other users on the system. Josh Smith and Rocko have made this point quite well. 2.6.24-17-generic #1 SMP i686 GNU/Linux Ubuntu Hardy -- Cannot send files to trashcan from an ntfs partition https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/192629 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Hi all, I have a similar problem under vnc, the gnome theme is messed up and if I open the appearance window, it will crash session. [Bug 402097] [NEW] Shuffle always starts with the same song
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: rhythmbox If you set the play mode to shuffle, then every time you start playing a playlist it will begin playing the same song. [Bug 403389] [NEW] Dragging songs to rearrange within a playlist has major scrolling issues
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: rhythmbox If you have a playlist that's long enough to have scroll bars, dragging songs to rearrange them has a few major issues. To reproduce this bug, do the following. 1. Create a playlist long enough to have scroll bars. The longer the better. 2. Pick a song close to the bottom of the list and start dragging. When you start dragging, the list will suddenly jump up near the top. If you move the mouse down to the bottom of the window, the list will not scroll. [Bug 76449] Re: Cannot sort static playlists
I'd really like to see this bug fixed. Oftentimes if you drag songs into a playlist, it will end up getting out of order. (especially if you do a drag selection) If sorting were implemented, you could simply click the track column and be done with it, but instead you have to tediously drag each song into place. And since there's also a bug with dragging songs in long playlists (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox/+bug/403389) it can get very difficult indeed... _ This is a very basic functionality and should be implemented in any serious program that includes a list view. I am trying to download onto an SMB share, but that requires restricting file names via restrict_file_names=windows in /etc/wgetrc. Even with this, rhythmbox gets stuck downloading because there is an invalid character in the temp filename. This shouldn't be reported as waiting but rather an error. Which brings me to my next point. Why can I not see the error from within rhythmbox??? I needed to manually run wget in order to figure out why podcasts were failing. This is not at all obvious. Next problem with podcasts: the UI totally ignores the podcast directory and resets it back to the home directory. It also gives no error message when you try to set it to something like an SMB share. And yet this clearly doesn't work... ubuntu 9.10, plain vanilla install. ** Affects: rhythmbox (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- podcasts fail 1. ignores wgetrc, 2. ignores specified podcast directory https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/505757 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to rhythmbox in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 505757] Re: podcasts fail 1. ignores wgetrc, 2. ignores specified podcast directory
The real problem: it would appear that however the downloads are being handled, they are not being handled in a way that restricts invalid filename characters. Can confirm this bug also affects me. `gnome-shell` is currently consistently the top program in `top` -- ~5454092 (Virt) / 2.4g (Res) 15.2% Mem Other behaviors I've noticed: - Nautilus is slow at times - When browsing the filesystem from a web browser (ie. attaching a file, or any "file dialog" moments), selecting the file causes it to hang for 5-10s Did not have any of these problems with 18.10. Some system-specific details: - I use an NVidia card (v418.56 of drivers, GTX 960 card) - Steam is running (I saw a few other people mention it; don't know if this would be salient or not) - I had to disable Wayland so that my system would boot correctly (This seems to be an NVidia thing) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1815550 Title: gnome-shell high memory and CPU usage when desktop files are constantly created or deleted To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons/+bug/1815550/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 63544] Re: Volume control key controls speaker not headphones
*Sigh*... the joys of free software. Again, something doesn't work properly and the bug gets marked as invalid because one can manually fix it. The current behaviour (in Gutsy Tribe 5) is unexpected and unintuitive. That means that there *is* a bug, we just have to figure out the best solution to the problem and file the appropriate upstream bugs that will result in this being fixed. I propose that we file an upstream to have the volume hotkeys control both Master and Headphones by default. That seems the intuitive thing for them to control. People that want to change that to get more control are likely to be a small percentage of advanced users and these users are likely to be able to find the ability in Sound Preferences. -- Volume control key controls speaker not headphones https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/63544 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for gnome-control-center in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

As it is a dialog from metacity, it only opens a dialog when it needs feedback about something. Re: [Bug 134745] Re: Metacity Dialogs appear and lock up the system.
No, I've been trying to track down when metacity-dialog gets called, but I guess I don't really understand metacity dialogs. I understand when thunderbird or firefox would open a dialog box, but I don't really understand why metacity would open a dialog. Some of the arguments give an indication of why the metacity dialog gets called --kill-window-question [SOME PROGRAM] With that said, I'm not sure why that would be called. Is it because the underlying program not responding? Sometimes it has to do with gthumb, sometimes firefox, sometimes nautilus, etc. So I guess that's a long answer to a short question, no I don't have any steps that could trigger the bug, I've been trying to find a pattern, but as of yet, I haven't found one. Re: [Bug 134745] Re: Metacity Dialogs appear and lock up the system.
After I wrote my last email about not being able to have easy steps to trigger the bug, it left me thinking. I thought more about what I had rambled about previously and why a metacity dialog would be triggered. My guess had been that it was caused by a Not Responding dialog. Well it turns out, that's exactly what is going on. TRIGGER If you open up the terminal and start any program (ex: gnome-calculator), suspend it (Ctl+Z) and then try to close the window as you would normally (via the metacity widget). /TRIGGER It should bring up a dialog that says This application isn't responding, do you want to kill the application. Turns out, my system never gets that far. I've never seen that dialog since I upgraded to Gutsy. Instead of showing the dialog, it just hangs until I ssh in and kill the process (ex: /usr/lib/metacity/metacity-dialog --screen 0 --timestamp 3288704419 --kill-window-question Calculator 0x2c3). Public bug reported: Using Dapper, fully updated. We have a few joysticks here and, for some reason, they are not calibrated correctly. In Windows I am able to make these usable by using the calibration tool in Game Controllers. There does not seem to be a comparable tool in Ubuntu which renders the joystick fairly useless. [Bug 54764] RFE: Handling of stitched images
Public bug reported: I own a Canon PowerShot A85 camera and am using gthumb on Dapper. I have taken some photos in Stitched mode. This keeps a bit of the previous picture on the screen so that one can take multiple photos that line up into one long photo. If I use the proprietary software in Windows, the following happens: 1) The photos are imported 2) The fact that I have taken photos in this mode is detected by the software and I am taken into a Stitching programme. This may be done off filenames as I cannot immediately see any tags about it. 3) The software automatically attempts to overlay the photos in the correct places and produces a chain of photos. 4) A square is drawn around the photos to give the biggest possible connected photo (when using this mode, one often slips up or down and this cuts off the bits either side). For most photos, this is all automatic and merely requires the user to confirm things. I would love to see this feature implemented in gthumb - it would give the feature to all cameras, not just mine. I realise that it is a lot of work and suggest that perhaps it could be done as follows: 1) Create a sub-programme to work with the photos manually. This would probably need the ability to manually move the photos around and the ability to draw a square to create one photo from them. 2) Create an option to select some photos and open the programme in (1). This would mean that the user could manually select photos to be stitched and somehow select Stitch these Photos. 3) Try to automate the process of lining the photos up by matching similar regions and the process of drawing a square around the combined picture. 4) Try to detect sets of stitched photos - this is likely camera specific. If all the above is done, this could be implemented camera-by-camera with the owners of unsupported cameras keeping to the manual method. 5) Perhaps a dialogue could be displayed after importing asking whether or not the user would like to enter the stitching programme. The detected sets could be displayed as a list of small pictures on one side. Note that I have also requested this functionality in f-spot as Bug #54762 ** Affects: gthumb (Ubuntu) Importance: Untriaged Status: Unconfirmed -- RFE: Handling of stitched images https://launchpad.net/bugs/54764 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Public bug reported: On one of my home machines this crash affects my wife's account but not mine. Any application which uses GNOME file dialogs will crash when she accesses a file dialog -- open or save. Observed with gnome, gaim, gimp, openoffice.org. Workaround for the last one is to use OOO's own file dialogs, but for native GNOME applications it's not that simple. We did come up with the workaround of launching a VNC session in which she has an xterm and metacity and gimp, but nothing else-- and in there GIMP works fine with the file dialogs.
