[Bug 122602] Re: Duplicated entries in Places Menu

2007-08-25 Thread Ross Peoples
This happened with the new gnome-menus update in which they fixed some
problems with spaces and updates from alacarte. One of the other things
it does now, which I'm not sure if I like is that all cifs mounts used
to show up as a place, but now they have been moved into a Removable
Devices submenu in places.

[Bug 22930] Re: Newly-sensitive button ignores clicks until cursor re-enters it

2007-07-09 Thread Ross Peoples
While guiding a new Ubuntu user (coming from Windows) through the
Install process, this was very annoying. Once he clicked the button, he
thought it was working so he left it alone until he realized the button
didn't actually get clicked. I told him it was a bug and that he needed
to move the mouse outside the button and try clicking it again for every
step of the install process. The first thing out of his mouth was, I
don't have to do that with Windows. So as trivial as it may seem, this
bug affects the usability of the user interface as a whole. Not to
mention the fact that the stability of the system comes into question
before it even gets installed.

[Bug 212789] Re: gvfs fuse mount is not functional after logout and subsequent login

2008-05-10 Thread Ross Peoples
ma2412ma:
Suppose gvfs is working, wouldn't it be a good idea to make this more obvious
to the users and not hide it somewhere as a hidden folder?

I have asked the same question in multiple places without answer. To
further the question, why isn't gvfs-fuse installed by default? When a
user mounts a share, they expect it to be accessible by ALL their
applications, not just the core Gnome ones. I know that gvfs is a
userspace filesystem, so why not mount it somewhere obvious in the
user's home folder. Something like this maybe: /home/user/Volumes. How
is a new user supposed to know to install gvfs-fuse, then look in a
hidden folder by the name of .gvfs?

[Bug 212789] Re: gvfs fuse mount is not functional after logout and subsequent login

2008-05-10 Thread Ross Peoples
In Hardy Beta, you had to manually install it. I was not aware they had
included it by default in the official release, but I am very glad they
did. The only other real complaint (besides stability) that I have with
it is the location of the shares. I really think they should be
somewhere more visible, contained in a folder with a more meaningful
name (e.g. ~/Volumes).

Like everyone else, I am also experiencing this bug. However, I actually
have all my important stuff mounted using the /etc/fstab file. People
tell me it's archaic to mount SMB shares using fstab, but it's the only
reliable way to mount shares. I know they are thinking about phasing
out the fstab file, but they really need to get gvfs reliable and
matured before they do. Thus far, aside from bugs like these, they have
done surprisingly well with its integration.

[Bug 212789] Re: gvfs fuse mount is not functional after logout and subsequent login

2008-05-12 Thread Ross Peoples
Try opening a file located on a gvfs mount using VLC or some other non-
gnome application, and you'll see why. Even though the applications may
use the Gnome file dialog, the dialog itself sometimes hides connected
shares, depending on the application. VLC is one example of such an
application. They only way to access media on a remote share is to
connect to the share using the mount command.

Another use case for visible, and easy to find mount points: What if I
need to access an something on a remote share via a command line
application? The only way to get to those shares from the terminal is to
find the mount points.

Also, I noticed something interesting...I don't even have a ~/.gvfs
folder, even though I have gvfs-fuse installed and shares connected.

ma2412ma: Though it would be nice to have a /Volumes at the root of the
filesystem, gvfs-fuse is a userspace file system, meaning that once you log
out, those shares are disconnected. There would also be permissions issues,
which is why it's best to have it in the user's home directory.

[Bug 212789] Re: gvfs fuse mount is not functional after logout and subsequent login

2008-05-12 Thread Ross Peoples
VLC is a widely used application and even though this may be their
problem, don't count on them to fix it because they still haven't fixed
a simple gui bug reported 5 years ago. But I'm not singling out VLC
here, there are other applications I have come across that have the same
behavior when it comes to gnomevfs/gvfs. The Gnome dialog simply won't
let you select the shares. You have to manually navigate to their mount
points. This in itself is frustrating enough, but having to right-click,
show hidden files, and find .gvfs in my home folder (which I personally
don't have for some reason) every single time you want to open a file
with a non-gnome application is just plain stupid. Not to mention that I
would have never found it if I didn't know how gvfs works.

[Bug 212789] Re: gvfs fuse mount is not functional after logout and subsequent login

2008-05-12 Thread Ross Peoples
Ok, as mentioned, for NEW users or others who are not as computer
literate, having to explain that their share is in a hidden using a
seemly strange name is not user-friendly. It's supposed to be Linux for
Human Beings. If I shared out my movies folder, and set it up on my
girlfriend's laptop so that she could watch them with VLC, or mplayer,
she would immediately ask me why she can't find any of the movies in
VLC, but she can find them in the file browser (Nautilus).

I have given plenty of reason as to why it should default to being easy
to find, so now I ask why everyone is so against it? If it helps users,
why is it such a bad thing?

So to answer your question, sure, I could make a symlink.I
COULDnot my girlfriend, not my grandmother, not my father, etc. And
these are the people Ubuntu is targeted to.

[Bug 212789] Re: gvfs fuse mount is not functional after logout and subsequent login

2008-05-12 Thread Ross Peoples
ma2414ma said it better than I probably could. I even have problems
opening files in gedit for editing using gvfs via FTP. It tries to load
them, then just stops and leaves you with a blank window. Another
directory in the home directory may not be the best way to do it, but
neither is a hidden folder in the home directory. I think ma2414ma's
suggestion about having a symlink to .gvfs by default would work pretty
well. It would certainly make it easier to find, as well as make it
possible for someone like jmcantrell to remove the symlink in case you
want to hide the directory. Also, it sounds like something that could be
easily implemented by the devs.

jmcantrell: I don't think it is obvious at all why it should be hidden.
Out of curiosity, what is your reasoning for having the directory
hidden? I'd like to get a different point of view on the subject.

[Bug 212789] Re: gvfs fuse mount is not functional after logout and subsequent login

2008-05-12 Thread Ross Peoples
I agree that it should just work without ever needing to know how, but
because of examples like those already given by myself and ma2414ma, not
all applications are using gvfs (and some, like VLC don't play nice with
it) yet, and it could be quite some time (or never) before they do.
Providing a visible location for the mount points provides a workaround
for the problems that currently exists. But even if those problems all
got addressed, you'd still need the mount points in order to use the
terminal with connected shares. Though it has already been mentioned
that Linux is not OS X (and I too am glad it's not), Apple is all about
the user experience and obviously they felt that having a /Volumes
folder was sensible.

[Bug 215700] [NEW] Connect To Server reports Timeout reached when connecting to an SSH host with a different RSA key

2008-04-11 Thread Ross Peoples
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

I recently reinstalled Ubuntu on my home machine. So when connecting to
it from work through Places - Connect To Server - SSH, the gnome-panel
freezes for about 10 seconds, then I get an error message saying
Timeout reached. I know it's because the RSA key was changed when I
reinstalled Ubuntu at home because connecting from the terminal using
the ssh command tells me the key is different from the known key and
answering yes allows me to connect.

The workaround for this is to delete or rename the file
~/.ssh/known_hosts, but Gnome should give you a proper message stating
the key difference, rather than giving a timeout message.

[Bug 215700] Re: Connect To Server reports Timeout reached when connecting to an SSH host with a different RSA key

2008-04-19 Thread Ross Peoples
I am using Hardy with all the latest updates. To reproduce:

1. Connect to an SSH server using Places - Connect to Server... and accepting
the Host key if you are connecting to a new SSH server.
2. Disconnect from the server by unmounting.
3. On the server you just connected to and disconnected from, generate a new
RSA key or reinstall the operating system.
4. Try connecting to the SSH server again.
The connection should fail with a Timeout reached error after several seconds.
5. To fix, go to ~/.ssh and rename the file known_hosts.
6. Try connecting to the SSH server again, and this time it should ask if you
want to accept the host's RSA key.

2008-04-22 Thread Ross Peoples
I am unable to troubleshoot since I no longer have the old known_hosts
file. But, accessing directly seems to do the same thing as Connect to
Server, so I imagine the results would be the same. It seemed almost
like gvfs wasn't expecting this scenario and eventually timed out
because it didn't know what to do when asked the question about
confirming the connecting to a previously known host that has a
different rsa key than was expected.

If you know how to generate a new host key for an SSH server without
reinstalling the OS, I will try to reproduce the problem with a virtual
machine as the SSH server.

trick, so I will try to mark this bug as fixed.

[Bug 191027] Re: Failed to connect stream: Invalid argument

2008-05-24 Thread Ross Peoples
It's funny you say that frago. All those bugs that make Hardy the
buggiest release yet are all Gnome bugs. I switched to KDE about a month
ago and haven't had a problem. No PulseAudio screwing up audio, no gvfs
screwing up the networking connections, no crashing of Nautilus every 20
minutes.

And I used to be a Gnome advocate and have used it for years. Now I'm
telling everyone to stay away from it. The new KDE 4 is WAY more stable
than Gnome (and faster, too).

[Bug 191027] Re: Failed to connect stream: Invalid argument

2008-05-25 Thread Ross Peoples
I was not trolling and I'm surprised by your reaction, Sebastien. I was
merely suggesting an alternative until Gnome gets fixed. And I have
filed bugs for all the problems I'm having. Reading blogs on the
subject, there are several people having problems with Nautilus
crashing. Some of those people are suggesting it had something to do
with the scheduler, while others think it's the new gvfs.

No, only a binary. What is ddeb anyways? Is that something I would have
put in? Because I don't remember doing it.

2008-05-25 Thread Ross Peoples
The wiki page says that development Hardy doesn't have hardy-updates.
However, it seems to work, so I guess that notice in the wiki is a
little outdated now. Anyways, as soon as I can recreate the
circumstances for this bug I'll get a backtrace.

Matt, I have a X850 Platinum Edition and I have the proprietary drivers
installed, and compiz looks great...aside from these types of bugs, I've
never had it crash.

Matt Jones wrote:

And thank you medigeek for nominating this for Gutsy. When I initially
reported It, I thought it was in the list of Gutsy bugs.

And, because I never mentioned it: I have an ATI X800XT Platinum Edition
with no restricted drivers installed (because they don't have compiz
extensions) on my desktop, and an NVidia Geforce Go 7700 with restricted
 drivers for my laptop.

Both machines still give the same error with stacking windows.

Re: [Bug 147943] Re: [MASTER] broken initial stacking

2007-10-11 Thread Ross Peoples
I know what you mean about video card being obscured. Not many people
run a X850 either. As far as bug reports go, I usually look to see if
someone else posted something about, and if not, creating a new bug
report. Alot of times it ends up as a duplicate of another bug with a
subject line that has nothing to do with the bug itself, similar to
this bug. My bug report had the title of something like, Panels do
not show on desktop after logging in, running Compiz. Then when it
became a duplicate of this bug which could be nominated for worst
subject line for a bug report.

But what I'm trying to say, is yes, you should file a bug report (as
long as it's not obviously a duplicate of another existing bug).

My experience with my card was strange to say the least. A fresh
install of Gusty + XGL had Compiz running. Then when I realized video
played very choppy, I installed the restricted drivers, which would
not run Compiz. So I uninstalled again. Rebooted, and reinstalled the
restricted drivers, and everything magically started working. I didn't
file a bug report because I figured I did something wrong.

So maybe try that and see if ity helps. Let me know and good luck,

Ross

I didn't want to fill the thread with more posts, so I emailed this to you.

That is interesting that it works for you. When I enable the restricted
driver and reboot. it says that my card does not support composite
extensions. I know it works, because I used to download the drivers and
install them from the ATI site, years ago with older Ubuntu releases.

Do you think I should file a bug report about it not working? I'm not
quite up-to-speed on how all the bug report procedures work in
launchpad. So I don't know if that is something they would care about.
Just wondering since you have more experience with it.

On a side note. I've often thought of just giving my video card to
Ubuntu, so they can make sure it works. It is kind of an obscure card.

[Bug 255316] Re: Disable square brackets in minimized window titles

2009-06-11 Thread Ross Peoples
I actually like the brackets because when I have a bunch of windows
open, it's nice to know which ones are minimized. If you wanna get rid
of the square brackets, at least provide some visual cue that the window
is minimized.

And as always, giving the user an option to turn it off is better than
forcing everyone to either live with it (if keeping) or live without (if
removing). Options are a user's best friendassuming the options are
organized properly.

[Bug 179413] Group Properties Window Doesn't Show Group Members

2007-12-30 Thread Ross Peoples
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-desktop-environment

Going to System - Administration - Users and Groups, then clicking
Manage Groups button will bring up a list groups on the system. Clicking
any of those groups and clicking the Properties button shows the Group
Properties window with a checkable list of Group Members. However, users
that are members of the group are not checked, so there is no way to
know if a user is currently a member of a group. Putting a check next to
a user name, then clicking OK, and bringing up the properties window
again shows the user is still unchecked.

On a side note, the old way of adding users to groups was much better.
In the Users and Groups window, there should be a tab for Users and a
tab for Groups. It is, after all, named Users and Groups, so you should
be able to edit groups without having to open up another window inside
the User editor. The way it is now is very confusing.

[Bug 179413] Re: Group Properties Window Doesn't Show Group Members

2007-12-30 Thread Ross Peoples
Well, I'm running Hardy Alpha 2 in VirtualBox now and it is not fixed.
However, this is a fresh install and I have not done the updates yet.
When I get all the current updates for Hardy Alpha 2, I'll report back
with the results.
