[Bug 1754425] WifiSyslog.txt

2018-03-15 Thread tom
apport information

** Attachment added: "WifiSyslog.txt"

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1754425/+attachment/5080493/+files/WifiSyslog.txt

** Description changed:

If I open the lid, it seems that the computer flat-out doesn't wake up.
HOWEVER, if I wait patiently more than 20 seconds, and press (not hold)
the power button, SOMETIMES, the computer will "snap out of it" and come
back to my desktop. Although RAM is 25% used, and CPU usage is around
25-50% or less (depending on apps), mouse will regularly freeze up for
some seconds every 10 seconds or so. Wifi will claim to be "on", but
there aren't any networks in the "select network" dialogue. Turning wifi
off and then on does not fix this problem. So I'll be in this terrifying
state of non-responsive every few seconds computer, with no ability to
reconnect to networks and report bug.

I force restart. The first restart, upon login, will hang indefinitely
on a purple screen with the cursor in the middle. I will have to force
restart again. Upon 2nd restart, it will boot "normally".

[Bug 1754425] Re: Lots of pcieport and nvme kernel errors - system non-responsive

2018-03-15 Thread tom
Today, it behaved similarly after closing the lid. Weird cycle of black
screen, power button turning off, screen momentarily flashing the cursor
low and in the middle of screen.

However, unlike before, after patiently wading through the mire, after
about 90 seconds, I was able to enter my password, and the system so far
isn't hanging every few seconds, and it connected to wifi almost
immediately upon waking!

Ran apport info diagnostics above. Maybe it's the new kernel that came
out last night?

Bug is certainly not fixed, but closer to fixed now.

[Bug 1754425] Re: Lots of pcieport and nvme kernel errors - system non-responsive

2018-03-18 Thread tom
Very bizarre development. Woke from lid close 3 times perfectly in the
past few days. Today, blinked black and barely-visible-for-an-instant
cursor for over 60seconds, so i force reset. attaching apport logs.

2018-03-16 Thread tom
So today, woke up properly from lid close.

I'm not sure what to make of it, as I haven't restarted for over 2 days.

@Kai-Heng Feng, I have no idea what you mean. This issue is upon closing
and re-opening lid. It does not occur upon boots, whether "cold" or
"re".

[Bug 1754425] Re: Lots of pcieport and nvme kernel errors - system non-responsive

2018-03-21 Thread tom
I think I've solved the mystery. I was very bothered that I was the
only/first one having it, given the ubiquity of my hardware. I believe
this theory also explains why it sometimes awoke just fine from lid
closed, but sometimes was all broken.

I believe my setting for "what to do when lid closes" got lost in
upgrade to 18.04, so it wasn't suspending, and maybe wasn't doing
anything at all! Then, if I happened to place it on good surfaces, it'd
be fine and "wake up". When I placed it on bad surfaces, like bed sheets
or other cloths, it'd overheat and cook itself into insanity, so when I
opened the lid, it wouldn't "wake up" because it was cooked into a fever
dream.

This is my best guess. I'll let you know if I experience the issue any
more, now that I've explicitly chosen "suspend" for "lid close" in
Settings.

[Bug 1807674] [NEW] The application launcher .desktop has not been marked as trusted.

2018-12-10 Thread tom
Public bug reported:

Since upgrading to 18.10, nautilus/gnome/ubuntu doesn't remember trusted
files. The owner is me, the executable bit is set. But every time, it
prompts me with "cancel" or "trust and launch". The problem is, it's not
ever trusting it. Tried the 17.10 stackoverflow answer to run "gio set
yourfile.desktop "metadata::trusted" yes". This doesn't work. error is
"gio: Setting attribute metadata::trusted not supported".

[Bug 1852053] [NEW] Nautilus Crashes when opening search field and entering first character

2019-11-11 Thread Tom
Public bug reported:

Upgraded to 19.10 one week ago. Then all worked fine. Nothing major
changed as far as I know. But now:

- click in Dock on the file stack icon to open Nautilus
- stay in Home or browse to any folder
- click Ctrl-F to open search field at the top of window
- enter any character as first character of search pattern
- Nautilus immediately crashes and window disappears immediately.

[Bug 1852053] Re: Nautilus Crashes when opening search field and entering first character

2019-11-11 Thread Tom
Sorry I spend about 30 minutes trying to understand how to open a crash
report program. I followed your link and Googled, but these
"explanations" are so unclear that I cant get any further. I use Ubuntu
since version 11 I think and it's remarkable how complex that crash
reporting remained...

In meantime problem persists, also after cold reboot. There is no
message popping up as in the past, to report the bug. Just window
disappears..

Well, it definitely is not gsconnect, as I disabled a week ago and the

I am trying to find some kind of pattern to make it predictable. But
it's mind-boggling so far. I wish few others had same issue ;)

[Bug 1852053] Re: Nautilus Crashes when opening search field and entering first character

2019-12-10 Thread Tom
Ok, maybe some progress. It appears I can search among a maximal number
of hits. So that depends per folder. And as soon as Nautilus start to
crash, I have to start all over by rebooting, as even small searches
then crash. (Logging out/in does not make a difference.)

For what it is worth, I:
1 - have huge number of files, mostly from nodejs packages.
2 - am also running syncthing
3 - use " echo 10 | sudo tee /proc/sys/fs/inotify/max_user_watches " to
keep hot reloading for Vue coding working

The problem is back. But not frequent enough yet to let me catch it
properly, I did get after running 'nautilius -q":

I see "GSConnect" there and I do have this Gnome extension. I will
delete it when I can reproduce the error better.

[Bug 1847633] [NEW] 19.10 wifi networks menu doesn't respect natural scrolling settings

2019-10-10 Thread tom
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce
Be in 19.10
Set natural scrolling to on/true/yes for mouse/touchpad
Go to select network
on the list of wifi SSIDs, scroll down. It won't move. Scroll up. It scrolls
down.

I've only tested this with touchpad, but I'm guessing it affects mice
too? Can anyone verify?

[Bug 1847647] [NEW] Launchpad report bug is broken in so many ways

2019-10-10 Thread tom
Public bug reported:

1. You can't easily go to report a bug on launchpad.net.

Go to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/
Click Report a Bug
Expected Behavior: report a bug
Actual behavior: Taken to stupid words
Fix: Put a link on ALL major launchpad.net pages where you can click on "Report
a Bug" and actually @#$(*& report a @#$( bug. Change all link text to
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs to "How to report bugs" or "Bug
reporting FAQ", not "Report a bug".

2. You can't report a bug in "I don't know" package.

This bug is proof.
Got to report a bug. Click "I don't know" radio for "In what package did you
find this bug?"
Optional: delete the package in unselected radio button below "I don't know"
Bug will still be filed under a package; in this case, evince. It should be
filed under NO PACKAGE or DONTKNOW or some placeholder package for all the
unknown-package bugs.

It's inconsistent, so very hard to reproduce, but I've experienced it
intermittently at least up to 19.04. Maybe close it if it's not
reproducible, I'm not sure what is best.

[Bug 1914164] Re: Time and other labels randomly disappear from the menu panel (top bar)

2021-02-01 Thread Tom
1. I don't think something is covering the clock, because it's not just
the clock that has problems. The text on other controls on menu panel is
also affected, see attached photos.

2. Attached

3. bug 1876632 seems similar, however the text is not corrupted, it has
simply disappeared.

2021-02-02 Thread Tom
This is a desktop computer so I don't suspend and resume. However I do
lock the screen regularly, but I could not reproduce the problem by
locking and unlocking the screen.

The problem seems to occur after a certain amount of uptime, though I
have not measured how much uptime.

Requested output attached.

[Bug 1969140] Re: Window minimize animation flickers and appears in the wrong place in Xorg sessions

2022-10-24 Thread tom
After using GNOME 43 Xorg with Debian Bookworm 5.19, I rebooted into Ubuntu
22.04 Xorg 5.15, did some checks and found out that on my Ryzen laptop this was
caused by the amd_pstate scaling driver which lowers the minimum CPU frequency
down to 400 Mhz instead of the 1400 Mhz default on the acpi_cpufreq which
Debian uses.

Debian (acpi_cpufreq) behaved perfectly on both Xorg and Wayland, so I enabled
the amd_pstate scaling driver and this issue came up the exact same way as in
Ubuntu: it seems that scaling down a much lower cpu frequency and then back up
all the times can cause some performance penalties and glitches.
To me it's fine because in the Xorg session I disabled the animations and the
battery life is noticeably better with the amd_pstate scaling driver, but as
usual ymmv!

[Bug 126057] Switching visualisation screen in fullscreen mode doesnt work correctly

2007-07-14 Thread Tom Badran
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

I have a two screen setup. When using the visualtion plugin, there is a
little combo box for picking which screen to appear on (i dont know
whether this exists or not on a single screen setup). Having the
visualisation running in fullscreen, and then switching the option to
change screens doesnt work correctly. There are at least 2 ways it
fails, on switch on my setup will cause the window to move to the
correct screen, but it wont be fullscreen, and the visualistaion becomes
invisible. Switching the other way just causes nothing to happen.

However it is possible to workaround by switching to embedded mode and
back to fullscreen.

2007-07-27 Thread Tom Badran
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Basically, since upgrading to gutsy, my gnome applets move aroudn on

I have a dual screen setup, with the gnome panels on the first screen.

its purely when i log in, and seems to only afffect applets that are

[Bug 119213] Re: Icons in GNOME Panel 2.18.1 change order

2007-07-31 Thread Tom Badran
Adding some more info, mine was closed as a duplicate and didnt realise
you needed more.

The problem i am having is that right justified panel applets are
rearaning order on login sometimes, the worst two offenders being the
clock and notification applets swapping, and the waste bin/workspace
switcher swapping. This is without desktop effects enabled, so even
though that is mentioned in the first report i dont thing that matter.
Also, this only started happening on a gutsy upgrade. On some logins,
they are displayed in the correct order, and other times not.

Attached a screen shot of the trash/workspace switcher being the wrong
way (by default the trash icon is on the right, with the workspace
switcher on the left, in this instance they have swapped for no reason).

[Bug 106739] Re: Tag editing in rhythmbox strips all tags completely

2007-08-01 Thread Tom Badran
I've spent a good few hours testing tagging with multiple and single
files with the latest rhythmbox in gutsy. I have a collection of about
1300 songs, in various formats including mp3 and ogg. I've retagged at
least on field on every song in my collection, and the new tags are
loaded fine by other programs too. In no case of multiple editing a
single tag (i.e changing the genre of a whole artist over multiple
albums) did i get any problems at all.

in a browser, however urls with ( or ) in get parsed incorrecty, for
instance (actually quite common with wikipedia urls):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screwdriver_(cocktail)

gets parsed to be:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screwdriver_

My assumption would be there are other characters that the same thing
happens with, but im not savvy enough on the url rfc to know what should
and shouldnt be valid.

[Bug 132672] Undocumented Solaris Mode option

2007-08-15 Thread Tom Badran
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

In Preferences-processes there is an option Solaris Mode which has no
tool tip or help documentation. My guess is this doesnt even make sense
on a linux system and should be removed, or restated/documented to
actually make sense.

[Bug 99157] xchat-gnome momentarily hangs just after connection established

2007-08-20 Thread Tom Wood
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: xchat-gnome

After starting xchat-gnome, as the server output reaches the point where
it asks for nickserv authentication, xchat-gnome hangs for a short
while. While it is hung, it doesn't respond normally to anything.
Mousing over the text box at the bottom of the screen causes the mouse
cursor to disappear while in that box. Any typing in that box is no
further displayed, even if you're in the middle of typing in the
customary /msg nickserv identify whatever - it simply stops accepting
input at the time of the hang. Attempting to kill the process
immediately fails, generating the standard Gnome hung application popup.
If one is patient enough (~ one minute or so), operation returns to
normal.

[Bug 134360] crash when changing image alignment in signature

2007-08-23 Thread Tom Badran
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Apport doesnt seem to be picking this up, but its easy to reproduce.

Just do Preference Compaoser - Signatures

The add/edit one, set its format to html, add an image, add some text,
and then right click the image and under Image Style set the alignment
to middle.

[Bug 134360] Re: crash when changing image alignment in signature

2007-08-23 Thread Tom Badran
Ugghh, just to be awkward, when i run evo in gdb, i get the same crash
but it just the output is just:

[Thread debugging using libthread_db enabled]
[New Thread -1233823056 (LWP 16149)]
CalDAV Eplugin starting up ...

Program exited normally.

So not very useful at all ...

Is it possible to to reset my apport ignore settings so i can capture
the crash properly? I assume its in evolution-data-server ..

[Bug 91426] Re: Nautilus doesn't show SD card icon

2007-08-26 Thread Tom Vetterlein
I can confirm this bug with Gutsy on a Lenovo R61 which I believe has a
Ricoh 5c843.

When using an SD card in the internal card reader I have an icon on the
desktop but not in the Nautilus sidebar.

Screenshot attached.

Do you need anything else?

[Bug 44082] Re: GNOME Panel icons (on right side) move apparently randomly on session start in some situations

2007-08-27 Thread Tom Badran
I can confirm im getting the same problem. All my applets are locked,
and anything on the right hand side of top or bottom panels appears in a
random order on login, no matter how much i reset their positions etc.

This is on a dual screen setup with two 1680x1050 monitors, primary on
right, secondary on left.

[Bug 135287] show far too many spelling suggestions in context menu

2007-08-28 Thread Tom Badran
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Using the english british dictionary, words such as 'im' and 'thats'
(missing apostrophe) show many many (more than screen height for im)
suggestions in the right click menu in the composer. I often type im
instead of I'm so i probably notice this more often than most. The
suggestions here should really be limited to maybe 5 or so of the most
likely.
