[Bug 667514] Re: deinterlacing is default
If deinterlacing were to be turned off by default a lot of users would experience poor video playback out of the box and it is unlikely that they would know what to do to fix it. This high CPU use will be solved in time as support for GPU accelerated video decoding such as XvMC (X-Video Motion Compensation), VDPAU (Video Decode and Presentation API for Unix) and VA-API becomes more widespread. For those not familiar with the Linux video APIs and extensions, XvMC is capable of offloading the video decoding of motion compensation and iDCT (inverse discrete cosine transform) work to the GPU for MPEG-2 video files. VDPAU supports motion compensation, iDCT, VLD, and deblocking, but for many more formats. The supported VDPAU formats include up through MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 ASP, H.264 / AVC, VC-1, and WMV9, but some video hardware is not capable of supporting all formats. For example software implementations see http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_itempx=Njg4Ng and http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_itempx=ODUzOQ For info on the underlying benefits which can be supported/used by any software see http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_itempx=ODEwNg (this was indeed merged in to the 2.6.35 kernel) and http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_itempx=ODcxOA -- deinterlacing is default https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/667514 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to totem in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

This is a regular pitfall of not embedding fonts which are not one of the standard PDF fonts, and also occurs on Windows. If Adobe Reader can display this font correctly on Linux presumably that is because this font was designed by Adobe. I am wondering whether we should close this bug on the basis that the font should have been embedded in the PDF file. On the other hand we could re-target this bug to the fontconfig package on the basis that it should choose a serifed font to replace Minion rather than a non-serifed font. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to poppler in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/656207 Title: evince displays wrong fonts -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 463037] Re: totem crashed with SIGSEGV in gst_pulsering_context_state_cb()
Sebastien, I'm not completely sure of the context of the there to which you refer. With regards to the upstream commit timestamp, are you referring to the upstream bug's question and supporting information which I pasted into comment #7 of this bug? While that particular commit was indeed included in gstreamer0.10-plugins-good 0.10.19 (see http://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/releases/gst-plugins-good/0.10.19.html ), I interpret that as the developer saying that the commit might have possibly fixed the reported bug, but they cannot be certain. I would be hesitant to close this bug based on that premise, or indeed to use such a premise as the basis for closing any bug. On the other hand Stephen Monteith's comment #9 of this bug seems a much more reliable basis for closing this bug, a basis which is further reinforced by him being the original reporter. I have forwarded Stephen's answer upstream and closed the upstream bug. -- totem crashed with SIGSEGV in gst_pulsering_context_state_cb() https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/463037 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to totem in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 579685] Re: unable to get stream from http://www.fs.fed.us/outdoors/naturewatch/eaglecam.html
Excellent question Tom. The short answer is that HTML5 is not relevant to this bug. While there are many aspects to HTML5, the one you are probably thinking about is the new video element. This enables video to be directly embedded in a web page and played back by any web browser which supports the HTML5 video element, without the need for a third party player plugin such as Flash or Quicktime or Totem. See https://developer.mozilla.org/En/HTML/Element/Video and http://hacks.mozilla.org/2009/06/html5-video-fallbacks-markup/ for more information. That's basically it, but there is a bit more to it - the web browser has to support the codec that the video is encoded in (something which is discussed in the second link in the previous sentence). This is where Google's new WebM format comes in - it is a strict subset of the popular Matroska (.mkv) format and uses Google's new VP8 video codec and the ogg vorbis audio codec. YouTube has had a HTML5 beta option available for a while now - they launched it prior to the announcement of WebM and have recently added WebM support. You can read more (and then try it out if you wish) at http://www.youtube.com/html5 Firefox 3.6 only supports HTML5 video in the Ogg Theora format. The latest Firefox nightly builds (available from http://nightly.mozilla.org/webm/ ) also support HTML5 video in the WebM format. However the video in the web page that this bug is concerned with is not using the HTML5 video element. -- unable to get stream from http://www.fs.fed.us/outdoors/naturewatch/eaglecam.html https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/579685 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to totem in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Are you running the 32bit or 64bit edition of Ubuntu? What is the output of fc-match Symbol on your system? I get: Symbol.pfb: Symbol Regular -- Evince frequently replaces pi glyphs with not equal to and other substitutions. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/568495 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to poppler in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 568495] Re: Evince frequently replaces pi glyphs with not equal to and other substitutions.
Do you have WINE installed? What about ttf-mscorefonts? I have neither installed. Something is causing fontconfig to choose a different symbol font on your system than on my system. To see the full details of the file being used type fc-match --verbose Symbol|grep file I get: file: /usr/share/fonts/X11/Type1/Symbol.pfb(s) -- Evince frequently replaces pi glyphs with not equal to and other substitutions. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/568495 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to poppler in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 667514] Re: deinterlacing is default
Another update - more progress has been made: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_itempx=ODgwOQ All your father has to do to watch movies of his holidays is select Preferences from Totem's Edit menu, then select the Display tab and then tick Disable deinterlacing of interlaced videos. However I'm not sure if they will look good interlaced. Regarding the CPU requirements for deinterlacing being too high for small-old systems, this is a familiar story in computing. The computer which I owned previous to the computer previous to my current computer (does that make sense? - I mean two computers ago) would choke and become almost completely unresponsive to keyboard and mouse input whenever it was displaying a web page with a flash animation (such as many flash ads). I kept flash installed since I could (just) successfully playback flash movies, but I couldn't do anything else (not even scroll the page) at the same time. The same computer could also just manage smooth playback of a 320x240 MPEG-2 file from disk - CPU went to 100%. The computer was a Pentium MMX 166MHz, by the time I was having these experiences it was 6 years old, I ended up dismantling it and taking the parts to the recycling centre, then buying a new computer. Fortunately these days the use of lead (Pb) in computer parts is much less common. -- deinterlacing is default https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/667514 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to totem in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 655707] Re: Firefox crashes opening pages that use webfonts
I'm running Maverick and have not installed the fix. My pango version is 1.28.1-1ubuntu3. It also doesn't crash when navigating to the Google webfonts page mentioned in comment #9. [Bug 655707] Re: Firefox crashes opening pages that use webfonts
I haven't changed any font related options (or any other options for that matter) in Firefox. I have attached a screenshot showing how the test page looks on my system. ** Attachment added: Screenshot.png https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pango1.0/+bug/655707/+attachment/1746044/+files/Screenshot.png -- Firefox crashes opening pages that use webfonts https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/655707 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to pango1.0 in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 655707] Re: Firefox crashes opening pages that use webfonts
Interestingly, if I navigate to the test page and then reload it, I can briefly see the words This is a test., as well as the left-bracket ( after the 8. On completion of the reload I can only see the 8 as in the screenshot attached to comment #24. I'm guessing this is the expected behaviour for a malformed web font, if the 8 is the only correctly formed glyph? -- Firefox crashes opening pages that use webfonts https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/655707 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to pango1.0 in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 667514] Re: deinterlacing is default
The other option for your father to watch movies of his holidays on his small-old system is to stick with Ubuntu 10.04, which is a Long Term Support (LTS) release and has a version of Totem which does not do deinterlacing. Why does he want/need to run the latest Ubuntu 10.10 on such an old system? -- deinterlacing is default https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/667514 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to totem in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

As I suspected, this is a WINE issue/problem.
