GNOME 3.6 Blocker Report

2012-08-21 Thread Andre Klapper
A few hours ago UI Freeze, Feature Freeze and API/ABI Freeze for 3.5.x
started. Also the String Change Announcement Period started.

The blocker list below is not necessarily complete.
Feedback, updates, help from packagers, developers, maintainers,
contributors, etc. is welcome. Please do speak up if some important bugs
are not listed here, or if some tickets should not be blockers.

Note: This list also includes open reports that still have a 3.4 target.

to reconsider the choice of gstreamer version for 3.6?

More work than it's worth. The control-center/cheese bug is the same
one, Empathy is going to get done, and brasero should be fairly straight
forward. A backend change can hardly be considered a feature when it
has no user visible changes (apart from working better ;).

That's not a blocker. I don't understand why gnome-contacts can't just
use libcheese-gtk optionally, gnome-control-center is already doing it,
and it would be better than the custom and incomplete code that was
written.

Obsolete bug. Apart from not having a reproducer, we removed the
animated notebook, as the transitions caused more problems than it was
worth, and we should get transition support directly in GTK+.

I don't see why this is a blocker. It's not going to get fixed unless
somebody with such a card writes a patch and tests it.

 Port to GSettings

I don't see a relation between feature freeze and the gstreamer 1.0
release.

 would it make sense
to reconsider the choice of gstreamer version for 3.6?

It would certainly be helpful if the GStreamer team could communicate
which issues still need to be sorted out before releasing 1.0 (e.g. via
blockers/target milestones in Bugzilla, or whatever suits them best).

 the components with gstreamer 1.0

0.11.9x is very API-stable. AFAICS, affected modules have been
identified and notified.
Ideally porting to 0.11/1.0 begins before 1.0 so both parties receive
testing and feedback. A bunch of applications have been ported already
and can get testing.

and it still looks like it will be
hard to get a fully ported install of distribution one gstreamer1.0 (or
you consider likely that e.g rhythmbox and shotwell will be ported as well)

I wouldn't block the transition in GNOME core until most applications
out there have been ported.
To pick up your examples, Shotwell developers seem to target Shotwell
0.14 for it, and Rhythmbox has a branch (work in progress).
It's up to maintainers, and I guess that contributions and help are
welcome if porting certain applications has a higher priority for you.

What's new in GNOME 3.6? (Release Notes time)

2012-08-21 Thread Andre Klapper
Hi everybody,

we need YOUR help!

It's time to start preparing the 3.6 release notes to tell our users,
developers and press what's and new in the next GNOME release!

What new features does your application have?
What important bug fixes?
What accessibility improvements do we have?
Which modules have better documentation?
What are the new things developers need to know about GNOME's
development platform?
What hasn't been done for 3.6 but is on your list for 3.8? (section
Plans for the next release)

Please take two minutes and add your news to

   https://live.gnome.org/ThreePointFive/ReleaseNotes

so we can tell the world!
Linking to screenshots or descriptive blog posts is very welcome.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I'd also like to point out that we have had BoF sessions / design
reviews on some of our new features at GUADEC, and have identified
issues that will need to be addressed for 3.6 to make the best
impression.

You can find these bugs on the feature pages:

https://live.gnome.org/ThreePointFive/Features/IBus
https://live.gnome.org/ThreePointFive/Features/MessageTrayImprovements
https://live.gnome.org/ScreenLock/BoF
https://live.gnome.org/ThreePointFive/Features/UserPanel

While not all of these are necessarily 'blockers', it is worth keeping
an eye on these bugs as well. And of course, help in addressing them
is very welcome !
