I would love to see Alfresco support if possible, although it can be
supported using just plain ol webdav. I have a contact for this if you're
interested in regards to useful api etc.

We already have most of the pieces of the puzzle (IMAP/SMTP, CalDAV,
 CardDAV)
in place, so it is a matter of tying them up together and letting users
 have a
single point of contact for adding their Zimbra accounts.

Currently one has to separately add their email, calendar and address book

Evolution and Evolution Data Server, which is a bit suboptimal.

 Happy hacking,

start contributing to GNOME

2013-05-10 Thread Puja Singh
Hi everyone!

I am Puja Singh,a third year undergraduate from Netaji Subhash Engineering
College,Kolkata,India.

I have been wondering for quite a few time to start contributing to GNOME,
specificaly on projects like GCompris and Banshee.

I already have gtk and the necessary libraries installed in my machine, and
I have started to get familiar with the environment. I also joined the
Gnome translation team(Hindi),a few weeks back, though I would really love
to contribute technically.

Here are few of my works,(not great) I have been working upon lately:

1. http://avenirnsec.com/ (the website of my college's annual tech fest)
2. my github profile ( https://github.com/Puja0708 )
3. working on cloud computing for last 1.5 years, and have a paper published
in a Springer journal ( LNISCT , conference by IDES and ACEEE ).

Kindly consider me to be guided properly to be able to be a regular
contributor to Gnome.

Thankyou
Regards

Re: libRSVG development

2013-05-10 Thread Eduard Braun
I contacted Hiroyuki Ikezoe and Christian Persch three weeks ago asking
for the current development status of librsvg (I attached my mail, I
hope it doesn't sound unkind?). I didn't receive any answer yet, though...

Any ideas what could be done in this case?

Eduard

Many projects are neither extremely active nor completely unmaintained.
(In case of librsvg, maintainers did some hacking seven months ago.)

It might be worth to contact maintainers explicitly (see
https://git.gnome.org/browse/librsvg/tree/librsvg.doap ) and kindly ask
for review of specific patches (overview of unreviewed patches at
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/browse.cgi?product=librsvg ), or to issue a
call for new blood (or invite active patch writers to co-maintainership)
if there is no interest in maintainership anymore.
---BeginMessage---

Dear Hiroyuki, Dear Christian,

I've got a question regarding librsvg development and you're listed as
the project's maintainers. Basically I want to know if you're still
planning to actively develop the library or if you're only providing
basic support.
Even If you don't plan to actively develop the library any more I want
to ask if you're still willing to apply patches by other authors or if
new developers have to be recruited in order to enhance the library further.

The reason for my request is a patch I wrote myself and which I had
submitted to Bugzilla over four months ago
(https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=605875#c9) but for which I
never got a reply. It seems there are also other patches currently
waiting for review. Also the GIT repository's log is a little quiet. The
last commit that wasn't some kind of build fix but really changed
librsvg's functionality seems to be older than a year.

Just to be clear: This isn't some sort of criticism. I'm just curious
what the current state of the project is and if it makes sense if I put
additional effort in creating patches for problems that affect me most
in the future.

The reason for my personal interest in librsvg development is that I'm
quite active on Wikimedia Commons and other Wikimedia projects and
Wikimedia's SVG renderer of choice is currently librsvg. Therefore one
often has to work around specific renderer bugs (Wikimedia has a list on
their own, too:
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/buglist.cgi?order=Importancecomponent=SVG%20renderingproduct=Wikimedia).

I'm looking forward to your answer and would be glad if it is positive.

Regards
Eduard

Re: gnome 3.8.1 files

2013-05-10 Thread Sindhu S
Hello,

I suggest you use jhbuild to compile GNOME 3.8 but what is your level of
expertise with compiling software? Are you beginner? Why do you need GNOME
3.8? What distribution are you using right now? if you are using Ubuntu,
there's a PPA (containing ready to install binaries of deb format) for
GNOME 3.8 I think.

as GNOME 3.8 has many dependencies which are not possible to get singularly
manually.

Re: start contributing to GNOME

2013-05-10 Thread Sindhu S
Hello, Puja

How would you like to contribute to GNOME? These are a few options :)

You can contribute to GNOME in many ways (and one of the ways is
translation, as you have already started doing so): coding, documentation,
art work, bug triaging, user experience research and even marketing!

I am a recent intern from the GNOME Outreach Program for Women OPW) and I
contribute to GNOME Documentation. Please take a look at
https://live.gnome.org/DocumentationProject/Tasks/

For coding, there are many GNOME projects that need bug fixing and you can
find easy bugs to solve if you search Bugzilla (bugzilla.gnome.org) with
keyword gnome-love:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=keywords%3Agnome-love

gnome-love indicates that it's a relatively easy bug to solve and
assistance will provided by the community in helping you make your
contribution.

Have you applied for GSoC or OPW? At the point of writing this am sorry to
say that the deadline for both these programs has passed but do consider
preparing yourself to apply in the next round.

http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/homepage/google/gsoc2013
https://live.gnome.org/OutreachProgramForWomen

For bug triaging, consider reading https://live.gnome.org/Bugsquad
It would be of great help to the community if you can correctly assign bugs
their keywords and status as I have done here:
https://live.gnome.org/sindhus/BugsTriaging

Would you like more help on where to start in any of the following? Do ping
anybody on: irc.gimp.net network on the channels:
#docs for documentation related matters
#bugsquad for bug triaging help

You can find out the IRC channel for any GNOME project by simply searching
for the project's wiki page on live.gnome.org
For example: http://live.gnome.org/Gitg is the wiki page for the GNOME
application Gitg and the developers are available for help on #gitg

Also consider subscribing to mailing list of the project you are interested
in contributing to. You can find all public mailing lists for GNOME
projects here: https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo

I hope this email has been clear in giving you a concise idea on how to
take your first step towards contributing to the GNOME community :) That
said this mailing list (desktop-devel) is *not* the forum for asking for
'how-to contribute' help. This mailing list is intended for queries related
to GNOME Desktop development. Please post queries for help in relevant
channels to receive replies that benefit you :)

Thanks.

Hello

a single deb or rpm file does not make any sense.
Packaging Gnome is a lot of work. Consider joining others packaging it.

Hi,

If you just want to install, then some distributions already offer 3.8.1
See http://www.gnome.org/getting-gnome/ to get the info concerning the
distributions you're interested in.
This list is about the development of GNOME, you will find more help on
https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gnome-list

Or do yo mean packaging GNOME for others? in such case you would have to refer
to your distribution to see its process

I hope to do some work on wacom tablet button mapping in gnome control
center. First mockup of new individual button mapping panel:
 http://firszt.eu/wacom-icons/mockup_of_wacom__button_mapping_panel.png

 Roadmap:
 1. Change existing panel to simple button list + add a new panel
activated after clicking on a button (mockup)

I tend to dislike vertical tabs but I can see how having a dedicated
panel per button is useful if we want to show that many options.

I'm trying something different now - tablet layout + click on button
triggers single button mapping window.

 2. First version would include only existing or already coded features -
single keystroke, on screen help, monitor switch, OLED labels matching
mapping. The last one is waiting for review on bugzilla.

I understand that the label/icon's only purpose would be to show up
the on screen help, is that right?
No, it's mainly for OLED screens.

 3. Add option to edit label i.e. to show Save instead of Ctrl-S on
 tablet
 4. Add option to select an icon instead of label.

I can see how having a label might be good (especially if we had those
keystrokes sequences), not so much for the icons though.

I.e. Pen icon instead of P for gimp, window + arrow icon instead of
Alt+Tab and so on.

 5. Implement keystroke sequences.

I can also see how this might be useful for some users but I am sure
the design folks aren't going to like it as it might be too
complicated for other users. Perhaps choosing a file/script to be run
could replace the necessity of implementing the keystroke sequences
ourselves but I'm sure the design team will find it equally funny.
Maybe all these and other advanced features should belong in a 3rd
party app for power users, outside of g-c-c.

That's far away from my current coding experience, but the feature is an
absolute life saver in my everyday work (windows unfortunately)

BTW, do you know we're thinking of implementing per-app bindings? I'm
waiting on the design team to tell me how advanced it should/could be
 so I implement it:
 https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=670907

I wasn't aware of that, but I saw something similar in wacom settings
mockups.

Thanks,
Przemo Firszt
