GSoC 2020 call for ideas

2020-01-16 Thread Ekaterina Gerasimova
Dear GNOME hackers,

It's that time of the year again: Google Summer of Code is
approaching. We need your help in creating a list of great project
ideas. It's essential that we have a well-prepared ideas page by
Friday, January 31st.

So what should you do? Please visit the ideas page [1] and enter your
project ideas under the "Untriaged Ideas" section.

 * Discuss your ideas with designers in #gnome-design to get their
input and plan collaboration, especially if your ideas are related to
one of the core GNOME modules. If you are not sure who to speak to,
start with Allan Day (aday).
 * Consider manageable ideas consisting of multiple smaller features
that share a common theme, in addition to single large feature ideas.
See the information for mentors page [2] for more on preferred project
formats and other mentoring resources.

If you are interested in being a mentor this year, please join
mentors-list [3] to receive future communications about GNOME's
participation in GSoC, including the information about important
deadlines. If you have any questions, please feel welcome to reach out
to us at soc-adm...@gnome.org

Thanks,
GNOME GSoC Admins

GUADEC 2016 call for papers

2016-03-30 Thread Ekaterina Gerasimova
Hello everyone,

GUADEC 2016 will be held for the first time in Karlsruhe, Germany. The
conference will be held on August 12th-14th, with a day of workshops
beforehand, and 3 days of BoFs and hackfests after.

GUADEC brings together GNOME users and developers for discussion and debate
of current topics, including:

* Design of the user and developer experiences
* Integration of the operating system plumbings into the core UX
* Application development and deployment
* Use of GNOME technologies outside of the desktop
* Outreach to new contributors
* Organisation and governance of the project

Talk proposals outside these categories are also welcome, provided that
they are relevant or inspirational to the GNOME community.

You will be able to chose between a short (approximately 25 minute) and
long (approximately 45 minute) talk slot when submitting your proposal.

The call for talks will have the following timeline:

  1. Wednesday, April 27th: deadline for submitting your talk proposals
through guadec.org
  2. Friday, May 8th: speakers will be notified if their talk has been
accepted
  3. August 12-14th: core conference days in Karlsruhe, Germany

Please submit your proposals before April 27th through the online
submission system available on the GUADEC website:https
://
registration.guadec.org

Talk proposals will be reviewed by the papers team between April 28th and
May 4th.

A separate call for lightning talks, birds of a feather sessions and
hackfests will be made later.

The papers team is looking forward to your talk proposal. In case of

Travel Assistance for GUADEC 2015

2015-06-16 Thread Ekaterina Gerasimova
The GNOME Foundation can offer travel sponsorship to individuals who
want to attend GUADEC and need financial assistance.

We are happy to announce that the Travel Committee is ready to receive
applications for sponsorships to attend to GUADEC 2015.

Application deadline: 2015-06-22. Send in your applications now, do
not wait until the deadline.

The instructions are at https://wiki.gnome.org/Travel

Some additional comments:
* Any information you send to the Travel Committee will be private.
* Asking for sponsorship *does not* guarantee that you will be sponsored.
* A good application with good information will be processed faster.
* If you are offered help with accommodation, the Travel Committee
will book your accommodation. You should state that you need
accommodation, and leave the cost blank.
* Always choose the most economical option whenever possible. People
who need travel sponsorship should look for the best price (i.e.
through a service like kayak.com). If the Travel Committee finds a
cheaper price, that will be the price considered during the
evaluation.
* No personal emails. Keep travel-committee CCed on all of your
replies. Neglecting to do this will delay your application.
* How to get to Gothenburg: https://www.guadec.org/travel/
* If you are a Foundation member, you should mention it in your
application. Preference will be given to Foundation members.
* If your paper submission was accepted to be presented at GUADEC, you
should mention it in your application. Preference will be given to
speakers.
* If you are in the Google Summer of Code program or Outreachy/OPW (as
student or mentor) you must mention it in your application. Preference
will be given to GSoC or OPW interns and mentors. OPW and GSoC
students usually get a percentage of their GUADEC expenses covered by
their sponsoring organisation.
* The Travel committee should confirm that we have received your
application within 2-3 days. After that, we will process them
together. So please do not panic if we take some time to respond with
the status. Regardless of whether your application is accepted or
rejected, you will always receive a response.

Oh that's great - thanks Fred. Is there a bug or some other place
where the license update is being tracked? We'll need a way to record
the consent of the original authors, if I'm not mistaken.

There's no tracking for that, but yes there should be.

When re-licensing documentation, the docs team usually files a bug
with a relicense patch attached. All the original authors are then
asked to sign off this patch and re-upload it.

There seems to be some objections to removing some of the more
in-depth jhbuild documentation. I think overall this is a little
confusing, they are also unmaintained. BuildGnome is maintained and
also has been converted to Mallard.

https://wiki.gnome.org/HowDoI/Jhbuild is the one that seems to be
preferred by most docs newcomers and team members so from my point of
view it would be good that the final result resembles it and works
just as well.

jhbuilding applications and even the Shell is not a task which is
restricted to newcomers, so it seems a bit odd to chose the GNOME love
namespace for the final result.

If the myriad of the jhbuild pages is reduced to only one, it would be
good if redirects are added at the old locations.

I would like to propose that BuildGnome be the canonical documentation
for people trying to setup a build. Any other documentation should
be retired and/or should be merged into the jhbuild main line
documentation for advanced users. If people want, they can put in
recipes or links to other documentation. For instance, for Arch
Linux, the arch wiki has a jhbuild reference on how to get it going.

I would like to start removing the confusion when trying to create
jhbuild. An easy experience for newcomers mean a better likelihood of
casual volunteers being able to come in and start working on at least
 the simple stuff.

I have helped a number of docs newcomers set up jhbuild and it is
usually not an easy experience which is why we recommend running
Continuous in Boxes, if at all possible (which isn't always the case).

 So Proposal is: https://wiki.gnome.org/GnomeLove/BuildGnome

is the only documentation on wiki.gnome.org, the rest gets retired and
 merged into jhbuild documentation.

Thanks for looking at this!

the desire to keep Jhbuild as a somewhat generic tool. However, I
don't see how the two use cases (Jhbuild for new GNOME contributors,

 the manual according to audience.

I believe this is no longer a problem; when I tried to merge the
by-then new BuildGnome page into the manual, and converting it to
Mallard, the primary problem was of license incompatibility between
the contents from the wiki and the existing manual.

The wiki is unlicensed as far as I can see from the pages and the ©

 Hi,

 Hi,

At some rare occasions, especially after the string freeze, translation
commits are pushed when rolling a tarball for making a new release.
Since the commit for the release should be pushed only when 'make
distcheck' has succeeded, there can be a push conflict and the
maintainer have to repeat the process (sometimes several times).

I think it would be nice to send mails on gnome-i18n and gnome-doc-list
to explain that commits should not be pushed during the release days. If
a translation or documentation commit is important, the maintainers can
anyway be contacted on IRC to know if the commit can be pushed.

I think there is no equivalent of 'svn lock' for git, so sending a mail
 is a solution.

Bonus point is to add a warning on l10n.gnome.org, but it is more work.

 What do you think?

 +1.

Is it too rare to care about this problem?

I don't think so but being a maintainer for years, you'll learn to do
 `git push origin master` first always. :)

As someone who makes releases, I always prefer to have the latest
translation in the release, but I understand that running a distcheck
on some of the larger projects can take a long time.

From a documentation point of view, it doesn't make sense to block
pushes for a whole day, especially as some maintainers release very
late. Have you considered dropping an email to
gnome-doc-l...@gnome.org and gnome-i...@gnome.org lists before running
the distcheck? I found communicating with translators to be very
effective and the docs team would prefer communication over a ban.

At the moment, we use #docs for everything.

 2. projects.gnome.org's migration to wiki.gnome.org.

The projects.gnome.org website is currently being migrated to the following
 places:

 GNOME Apps: https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps
 GNOME Projects: https://wiki.gnome.org/Projects

Both pages are currently under construction. Maintainers and developers will
now be able to modify their app / project page without the need of a git
 account

Don't all maintainers have to have a git account anyway? :)

and most of all without the need to clone an huge repo like
gnomeweb-wml. All these without losing some of the benefits of Git like the
history of previous changes and a diff between the various page changes
 themselves.

When you document how to lock down individual pages to prevent random
people from from editing them, please send the link to the mailing
lists as it is moderately complicated if one has not done it before.
