Point of clarification: mentors are not paid by Google.  Mentor
*organizations* are paid by Google.

GNOME has never paid mentors, and has always used the money as a
source of income for the Foundation itself.

Technically, it's $500 per student (one mentor could have multiple
students).  ;-)
