Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult
2011/8/21 Sam Spilsbury smspil...@gmail.com Invisible borders are not implemented in unity-2d Are they technically infeasible or could they be implemented with some effort? We should make some noise about this during the Natty cycle so people keep their eyes open and file bugs. 2 * Invisible window resize area - around 3px invisible area to allow resize on all sides. * Working grip backported to gtk2 already available in ppa : https://launchpad.net/~bratsche/+archive/gtk * Workaround: Edit /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/metacity-1/metacity- theme-1.xml. Set the following values in frame_geometry_normal as desired: distance name=left_width value=3/ distance name=right_width value=3/ distance name=bottom_height value=3/ Binary package hint: metacity - The issue has been an issue for users (especially of large) screens for several releases- Trackpad users seem to be particularly impacted by this- The issue appears to have been significantly aggravated in Lucid by changing the border width from 3 pixels to 1 pixel The window borders in metacity are far too thin to be used for comfortable window resizing, and resize handles are not available in all applications (or even most). In fact, of all the windows I have open right now, not a single one of them has a resize handle. The result is that I get a lot of misses when I try to drag a window border, which usually results in my clicking on the wrong window altogether. The best fix for this usability bug is to create an invisible region around each non-maximized window about 4px thick that can be used for resizing (in addition to the visible border). Or perhaps there should be a border thickness option on the System Preferences Windows dialog (although the default thickness should still be increased considerably). Ideally all windows would also have a resize handle but I realize that these have to be application controlled (at least that seems to be the position of the metacity team). [Desktop-packages] [Bug 830481] Re: Libreoffice gives runtime exception
Sander Deryckere, thank you for reporting this bug and helping make Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal: apport-collect 830481 When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs. I do not know if this error will trigger an automatic stack trace. However, in the case that it could, please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. Now open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the crash report you wish to submit. If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with 'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'. I'll leave the bug status as Incomplete until the request apport and check for automatic stack trace is done. ** Changed in: libreoffice (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete ** Bug watch added: Debian Bug tracker #619263 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=619263 ** Also affects: libreoffice (Debian) via http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=619263 Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to libreoffice in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/830481 Title: Libreoffice gives runtime exception Status in “libreoffice” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Status in “libreoffice” package in Debian: Unknown Bug description: When Libreoffice is purged and reinstalled, it can't be started up again and causes a runtime exception. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 574693] Re: nautilus ftp file transfer hangs in lucid
I'm using 11.04 Natty, and I can confirm this bug still happens. It doesn't matter which particular ftp server is running on the server: wether it's wu-ftpd, pure-ftpd, wzdftpd or vsftpd, the bug happens in virtually exactly the same way. I've tried them all (thinking it might be their fault somehow). And I can confirm that FileZilla can do bulk file transfers with no problems, connecting to those same servers. So the problem clearly lies with Nautilus' VFS subsystem, as it handles bulk FTP file transfers. Please fix this, since fast (i.e. faster than SFTP), easy file transfers on a LAN (where encrypting connection authentication isn't all that crucial, thanks to the protection from the internet by a firewall) are in my opinion *a basic office necessity*. It would be a pity to have to rely on ancient, sometimes-inconsistent Microsoft-designed SMB networking (ie. creating file shares using nautilus-share), when an FTP daemon + avahi-daemon can do it better and faster, sticking to good-old TCP/IP. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gvfs in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/574693 Title: nautilus ftp file transfer hangs in lucid Status in Nautilus: In Progress Status in “gvfs” package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: Binary package hint: nautilus 1) Description: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Release: 10.04 Description: Ubuntu 11.04 Release: 11.04 2) nautilus version: 1:2.30.0-0ubuntu4; 1:2.32.2.1-0ubuntu13 gvfs version: 1.8.0-0ubuntu2 3) I tried to copy a directory with files from a server to my PC via FTP. I expected finishing the transfer. 4) The file transfer window appears and after a few percent of progress, it stops copying. I can not close the window, because when I click the cancel button, it goes to gray and nothing happens after that, so I have to kill the nautilus process. When I had tried to copy the same directory again, it stopped at the same percent of progress. Copying the same directory in nautilus via SFTP works flawlessly. Also copying that directory by gFTP works without problem. I did not see any error messages or entries in syslog related to this problem. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 829921] Re: offensive use of 'English'
Hi Max, Thanks for your help to make Ubuntu better by posting this observation. Actually, the country _is_ specified for all the available English translation variants. On my box I see these items: English (Australia) English (Canada) English (New Zeeland) English (United Kingdom) English (United States) In addition to those menu items Language Support lists also an English only (i.e. without country) special item. The latter serves as a separator between languages that are included in the LANGUAGE environment variable and the other languages. Its purpose is not to mean English as spoken in the US. OTOH, if somebody selects the non-country English item, Ubuntu still has to pick a proper locale name to put into the LC_MESSAGES environment variable, and it's configured to pick en_US.UTF-8 in that case. The reason for not having it pick en_GB.UTF-8 is of a practical nature: en_US is assumed to be available on more computers worldwide than en_GB. A similar topic was previously discussed at bug #710148, btw. You may want to click the Help button from the Language Support window for a description of how Language Support is intended to work. Considering the above explanation, I hope you agree that there is no obvious bug to fix. ** Changed in: language-selector (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) = Gunnar Hjalmarsson (gunnarhj) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to language-selector in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/829921 Title: offensive use of 'English' Status in “language-selector” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: I have been presented with a window 'Language Support' that lists 'Language for menus and windows:' and instructs me to 'Drag languages to arrange them in order of preference. It lists these languages: English (United Kingdom) English English (Australia) I could claim that the first two entries are duplicates, but this would seem to be a case of using 'English' to mean the variant used in the USA. As I am English, I find this offensive since English is English - the UK contains several countries each with their own language. So, IMO, the correct list should be : English English (United States) English (Australia) However, I realise that is confusing to people from the United States and that they are likely the majority in terms of English (variant) speakers. The usual 'solution' is to always specify the variant, ie : English (United Kingdom) English (United States) English (Australian) Please consider making the fix. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 742544] [NEW] Launcher is shown on the wrong screen in some multi-monitor setups
You have been subscribed to a public bug: WORKAROUND: Permanent workaround (requires logging back in again): Edit ~/.config/monitors.xml, find the monitor you want the launcher to display on and change: primaryno/primary to: primaryyes/primary Now log out and log in again. Temporary workaround (no logout required): Open a Terminal window and... 1. Run xrandr to find the NAME of the output you would like to make primary. 2. Run: xrandr --output NAME --primary nohup unity --replace ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: Binary package hint: unity In my particular configuration I have an external monitor hooked up to my laptop on the left of the laptop display. The unity bar is ending up on the laptop display though making it in the middle of the two monitors. This makes it quite difficult to activate the bar with a full screen application open on the laptop (hitting the upper left pixel of that monitor without going over). I think it would make more sense to make it configurable which monitor the bar ends up on, or at least look at the orientation of the monitors when determining where to put the bar. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 777777] Re: Mark read / unread only works once in message window
Sorry, just to clarify, fix should be in Evo 3.0.3+ or 3.2 - so will have to go to Ubuntu 11.10 or later to get the fix. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to evolution in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/77 Title: Mark read / unread only works once in message window Status in “evolution” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: Binary package hint: evolution Open a read message in its own window, CTRL-SHIFT-K to mark as unread, now CTRL-K does not work. Open an unread message in its own window, CTRL-K to mark as read, now CTRL-SHIFT-K does not work. This can also be seen in the menus. Open an unread message and Message Mark As Read is available, Unread is greyed out. Click Read, now open the menu again, Read is still the only option available. It seems like when message status is changed, the message window doesn't update to notice the new state. Note that the message is marked as read / unread, just that the menu does not change in the Evolution window. This applies when opening messages in separate windows, not while viewing messages in the preview pane. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 742544] Re: Launcher is shown on the wrong screen in some multi-monitor setups
Thanks Andrea, that sounds like good news. And an obvious feature that was missing from Monitor Preferences in natty. ** Package changed: unity (Ubuntu) = gnome-control-center (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/742544 Title: Launcher is shown on the wrong screen in some multi-monitor setups Status in Ayatana Design: New Status in Unity: Incomplete Status in “gnome-control-center” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: WORKAROUND: Permanent workaround (requires logging back in again): Edit ~/.config/monitors.xml, find the monitor you want the launcher to display on and change: primaryno/primary to: primaryyes/primary Now log out and log in again.
