Bug description:
  A recent (within the last two weeks) update of the Totem application means 
that I can enable the 'Subtitle Downloader' plugin now. However, if I use the 
plugin while a movie is playing, it seems to work when 'Find' subtitles is 
selected, and often one or more subtitle files appear. If I select one of the 
subtitle files, and click 'Play with Subtitle':
  1. The progress bar (below the file list) moves, and then stops moving.
  2. The 'Play with Subtitle' button is greyed out.
  3. The cursor shows as the 'something's happening' icon, and stays that way 
indefinitely - at least 10 minutes.

  I have a 2 monitors and create a external desktop environment, and the 
external panel stacked vertically above the primary panel. following is some 
information about xrandr -q
  DFP1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
  DFP2 connected 1920x1200+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 518mm 
x 324mm

  DFP5 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

  So the primary panel locate at (0,0) while the external  locate at (0,1200), 
and the gnome-panel bar locate at the bottom of the primary display.
  The I want to  set the two panel vertical overlapped a small area( reset the 
position of the external display to(0, 1160) ). use the command:  xrandr 
--output DFP6 --pos 0x1160
  The issue observed, gnome-panel don't think the panel-bar on the bottom of 
the primary desktop, it reconfigured it a wrong position and a wrong big area. 
all the window and icons can't move to this area. 
  and if we configure this bar to left,right,top, it won't observed this issue. 
so the issue only happened when the bar was be set overlapped 
  May be there some logic mistake in the file ./gnome-panel/panel-mutiscreen.c 
, in the function panel_multiscreen_compress_overlapping_monitors, it thought 
we do a full desktop overlap, and subtract a monitor while we just set a part 
of overlap.

Hi, 
I am experiencing the same issue with Network controller: Intel Corporation 
WiFi Link 5100
Everything was working perfectly with previous versions of Kubuntu (i am using 
KDE), but Oneiric 11.10. 

The connection is extremely slow and drops to 0 Kib.s. I am able to get a 
correct speed during the first minute of connection and then, it drops to 0 
KiB/s.
#42 from Damon did solve the problem.

Bug description:
  This may be either network-manager or kernel, depending on triage...

  I have verified this on both a Lenovo X201 and a Lenovo T500 laptop.

  Both work perfectly with fully updated 10.10 and 11.04 versions of
  Ubuntu.

  However, booting into a fully updated 11.10 (as of 28/08/11) I get
  very poor wireless networking performance. Between 6-10% packet loss,
  very very slow connection and transfer rate. All in all, practically
  unusable.

  I have reported the bug on the X201 laptop, I will add the similar
  logs from the T500 also if required.

  As soon as I swap back to either 10.10 or 11.04 I get perfect
  wireless, it's only on 11.10 that I get problems, this would suggest
  it's not hardware or configuration on my side.

  I have had this since first installing 11.10 which was a little after
  Alpha 2.

Bug description:
  Upgrading to 11.10 from 11.04 has rendered Empathy unusuable for me
  since Empathy doesn't seem to use system proxy settings anymore, so
  connections to accounts fail. Other software like Chromium works
  correctly. I've double checked the proxy settings in System Settings
  - Network - Network proxy and also in dconf - system - proxy, and
  also in gconf-editor - system - proxy, and the everything seems
  correct. I also have the same problem with Pidgin and I've filed bug
  #878032 about it.

After running a system for a while I find this symptom has disappeared.
I assume that either the bug has been fixed or another app has dealt
with the situation more intelligently and the file has been created
successfully, so that the error is no longer seen when using gedit.

Bug description:
  All the time I'm trying to type first letters of the file I need
  Searching Field which appears on the right bottom is disappearing.
  Or every time I'm trying to write smth inside, sometimes I write wrong
  letters. In old versions of Ubuntu Backspace was deleting last
  letters. Here in takes me out of the folder... please make it as it
  was... cant't clean it. Got a screenshot

When I attempt to export a PDF from Libre office to a Samba share on
kubuntu, I get the message You can only select local files.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Open any libreoffice doc from local file, or create new one. 
2. Click the PDF export Icon in the toolbar. 
3. Navigate the file picker to a samba share  - I had one already in the 
shorcuts. 
4. Enter filename and click save
5. see message You can only select local files

After shrinking the physical volume inside a partition, the disk utility
shows the old (larger) for the partition. Pvdisplay on the CLI shows the
correct size. I expect the physical volume to show it's real size
(200G), not the size of the partition (215G).

To reproduce: create a physical volume on a partition. Shrink the
physical volume but leave the partition's size untouched.

  When I try to view one document created by ms-word, it seems numbering  
bullets for level 2 will be changed. I have used symphony 3.0.0 fp1, it looks 
well.

  For example:
  open one document created by ms-word, it should have numbering, like:
  1. xxx
  2. 
   2.1 xxx
    2.2 xxx
   3. xxx
  3.1 xx
   3.2 xxx
  When I viewed it in libreoffice, it will automatically modify 2.1 2.2 to 1.1, 
1.2, and 3.1 3.2 to 1.3, 1.4.

  It should be working as ms-word or symphony

  With Unity, the menu bar (File Edit View ...) should NOT be attached

  for LibreOffice Impress, the menu bar follow the window.

  ApplicationsFilesFolders), does not hide when the Impress window
  is maximized, hiding the File menu in the menu bar. Really annoying.

  1. Start Gimp and open the example-before.tif with LZW compression attached 
below
  2. Go to Image - Mode - Indexed, choose Generate optimum palette - 
Maximum number of colors, change the value from 256 to 16 and hit Convert 
button
  3. Go to File - Save, replace the file and change compression to jpeg
  4. Now a message appears saying:
  TIFF image Message
  PhotometricInterpretation 3 not allowed for JPEG

  Failed a scanline write on row 0

  Saving '/home/myname/example-after.tif' failed:

Exactly the same thing is happening on my machine over and over again.
Those Low Disk Space warnings keep popping up... although I checked the
Don't show warning again-dialog several times.

Modifying housekeeping/ignore_paths using gconf-editor didn't work for
me either.

Strangely those warning-messages don't reappear if you clicked them away a few
times (about five to six times for the same volume!).
But after a reboot everything starts all over.

It's very annoying since I have several partitions that are intentionally
full.
(Partitions that each hold one image-file of the partitions size. I mount these
image-files via a script.)

This problem occured after upgrading to 11.10 ... 11.04 worked fine.

Hope this can be fixed soon.

Low disk space warning popping up repeatedly.

Bug description:
On Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot.
Since that upgrade, I repeatedly get the warning

Low Disk Space
The volume ... has only [..] MB disk space remaining.
This is for a few Windows partitions on a multiboot machine, which I mount by
default on Linux startup.

The problem:
- I could not care less about disk space on these partitions, while on Linux.
I want to take care of them while on Windows.
- The dialog is showing up repeatedly for the same disk.
- It's a disruptive popup dialog, instead of being a more subtle bubble
notification (this is being discussed in a feature request somewhere on
launchpad).
- The Don't show any warnings again for this file system does not have any
effect. Yes, it does change a setting somewhere in system settings, but the
popup will show up nevertheless.
- Trying to change the threshold or the exclude directories via system
settings did not help either.
- I did not find how to uninstall or disable this new feature.

This is just one of the many things that make the new 11.10 a horrible
experience for me.

  I have a Windows 7 desktop PC where there is documents LibreOffice.
  I have a laptop which is under Ubuntu 11.04 64 bits.

  I'm able to connect to the Windows computer through a wifi network. On the 
Ubuntu laptop, I open a LibreOffice document wich is on the Windows computer to 
use it as a model. 
  I choose Save as to give a new name and create a new file in the same 
Windows directory but I get the following error message :

  Erreur lors de l'enregistrement du document :
  Erreur générale.
  Erreur d'entrée/sortie générale.

  So in english :

  Error during the recording of the document :
  General error.
  General Input/Output error.

  The name of the LibreOffice file doesn not have any special caraters
  like accent or space or ...

  I precise that I have this trouble only with LibreOffice documents. The Save
  as works perfectly with other type of file (txt, jpg, and so on).

Please!
I'm using Ubuntu for years now! This is on of the TOP5 Bugs to me overall on 
Ubuntu.
It's not so bad to me, but telling people that are new to Ubuntu, that they 
have to delete their files on their drives by pressing Shift+Del makes no fun.

Is it so hard to implement this? What is the reason, this is only on
Whishlist?

  This is because instead of deleting files from removal devices, Nautilus

  a .Trash-$USER directory and moves the files into there.

  Can we please make the default be to _not_ do this?  It makes (some) sense for
  the main drive, but removable ones tend to be temporary storage.  A better
  alternative would be to remove the files from the removable device and into 
the
  user's home directory .Trash

I'm seeing this behaviour as well since the upgrade to 11.10. My
.xsession-errors (attached) contains many of the following messages:

(nautilus:18981): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_value_get_object:
assertion `G_VALUE_HOLDS_OBJECT (value)' failed

and

(nautilus:22664): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_value_get_object:
assertion `G_VALUE_HOLDS_OBJECT (value)' failed

The number (timestamp?) after nautilus varies, but there are always many
consecutive messages with the same number.

  I'm sick and tired of finding that my digital camera card is full after 
deleting
  all the pictures, and my iAudio still plays deleted files.

  This is because instead of deleting files from removal devices, Nautilus 
creates
  a .Trash-$USER directory and moves the files into there.

  Can we please make the default be to _not_ do this?  It makes (some) sense for
  the main drive, but removable ones tend to be temporary storage.  A better
  alternative would be to remove the files from the removable device and into 
the
  user's home directory .Trash

   vlc will hang when trying to open anything additional -  it also appears to 
crash unity-window-decorator among other things (have crash report on that)
  Ex.'s - the playlist, tools  preferences and so forth

  Switching the qt4 gui to anything but 'default' (gtk+) in qtconfig-qt4
  and it works without incidence (tooltips are empty bit otherwise
  good).

  Will attach xsession.errors, reflects a login, opening vlc, opening 
xsession.errors, then attempting to open playlist window in vlc.
  (using nvidia-current)

  Note to Vlc users - I've found clearlooks to be best choice, should be
  good for other apps as well. Also do as mentioned in comment 13

  Note to Anki users - please review comments 20, 22 for current
  workaround

I was testing the changes made to BBC iPlayer today - they're making
more use of Stage Video stuff - which messes around with Flash and
NVIDIA... Adobe's code...

And lo and behold, I had to kill firefox-bin manually.

Looks like there is a lot of interaction with bugs in Flash...

Bug description:
  After upgrading firefox to version 3.6.23 few days ago, firefox does
  not work properly.

  At firt use after computer starting, firefox works well.
  It is possible to close firefox without any issue.
  But at second starting, firefox indicates it is impossible to launch firefox 
because firefox-bin process is still running.
  The workaround is to restart the computer, or simply kill the firefox-bin 
process.

  This behaviour happened right after upgrading firefox to version
  3.6.23, and is systematic with the profil user I use (it's an admin
  user).

  I tested with another profil (non admin) on the computer: The problem
  has not been reproduced.

  System is 10.04 LTS (kernel 2.6.32-33 generic)

  Currently I am running the 8.04 (Hardy) release, version 2.22.3
  (Ubuntu 2008-07-09), kernal 2.6.24-23-386 (#1 Sun Jan 25 23:32:00 UTC
  2009), GCC version 4.2.4 (i486-linux-gnu).

  I have run a few versions of Ubuntu over the last 3 or 4 years on a
  Compaq Presario with 900 MHz AMD Duron(tm) Processor. And I have
  always had this problem while using the Ubuntu Text Editor, any other
  text editor, or any word processor. It has been on all versions, so I
  suspect it is hardware specific, but have not been able to test it on
  other computers.

  After I copy or cut some text into the buffer (using Ctrl-C or
  Ctrl-X), and after I move the cursor to the place in the document
  where I want to paste, then try to paste using Ctrl-V, nothing appears
  to happen. However, the paste function has indeed pasted the text as
  soon as I pressed Ctrl-V. The problem is that it has pasted all the
  buffer text into a randomly chosen location within the document.

  The randomly selected paste location is often fairly close to the
  place where I want to paste the text, and often a few paragraphs
  above. But it can also be absolutely anywhere else, above or below the
  place where the cursor is located. To find that randomly placed text,
  I can use the search function, or (better yet) press the undo function
  keys (Ctrl-Z).

  If I do not immediately remove the randomly placed text, it will
  remain in the document. Thus, many of my documents on the internet
  have been partially ruined, and contain some nonsense words, sentences
  and paragraphs. For example, if I was cutting and pasting the word
  existentialism, and somewhere else in the document there was the
  clause the dog bit the postman, then the paste function might
  randomly place the buffer right in the middle of another word like
  this: the dog bit the postmexistentialisman.

  Whenever I see nothing happen after pressing Ctrl-V, I know the paste
  Function has placed the buffer text into a randomly selected location
  somewhere else in the document. Of course, I cannot see where it has
  done this, since It will paste the text absolutely anywhere in the
  document, but leave the cursor exactly where I put it in the first
  place.

  But if nothing happens when I press Ctrl-V, I do not press Ctrl-V
  again. Instead, I press Ctrl-Z (undo). That will remove the buffer
  text which was randomly pasted somewhere in the document, then move my
  cursor to that particular spot. Of course, after this I need to return
  to where I was originally working. Since many of my documents are more
  than 50,000 words, trying to find the place where I was originally
  working in the document can be very time consuming and frustrating.

  One thing that sometimes helps is if I click and double-click about
  ten times on the spot where I want to paste something. When I do that,
  chances of successfully pasting the buffer text at the cursor's
  location are better, although still not certain.

  This bug is very frequent, occurring about half the time I use the cut
  and paste function.

  But now another similar problem has arisen. Before I updated to 8.04
  (Hardy), the search function (Ctrl-F) would never randomly paste what
  was in the copy buffer into a randomly selected place in the document.
  However, I have seen the search function do this twice while I was
  using the Ubuntu Text Editor. I have not seen it do this more than
  twice, although it may have done so without my catching it. And I have
  not yet seen the search function do this in the Open Office word
  processor. But I have confirmed that it has done this in the Text
  Editor at least twice.

  I don't know if this problem can be fixed, except by getting a new
  computer, since I suspect that it might be a hardware problem. But if
  there is something I can do about it, I sure would appreciate some
  help. This bug has really caused some serious problems at times.

Thanks, I did.

This is probably out of scope here but I would like to get a bit focus
about that fact. This bug with with another one (or design decision -
not sure) leads to a silly situation.

By another bug I mean notifications appear on the right most monitor (not the 
primary one as they should).
In result: when considering multiple monitors setup there is no way to get dash 
and notifications on the same screen. No matter how one will connect or setup 
screens.

Moreover the more monitors we connect, the greater gap between the dash and 
the notifications become.
Let take f.e. 3 monitor setup. The center monitor probably will be the primary 
one where we would like to have both dash and the notifications.
However dash with all launchers appears on the left monitor when notifications 
go to the right one leaving middle (primary) monitor 'empty' of most 
focus-important things. Kind of nonsense, isn't it?

catched my attention:

Earlier in this file, I noticed that the file descriptor 3 was used to access 
/tmp/.X11-unix/X0:

I've searched for the error message and it seems related more to X11 than to 
eog itself. Therefore, could you please answer the following questions?
-Are the permissions on that file are correct (run ls -lA /tmp/.X11-unix/X0 
from a terminal)? They should be similar to:
srwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 2011-10-31 09:43 X0
-Could you check the permissions on the parent directory as well (should be 
like drwxrwxrwt 2 rootroot4096 2011-10-31 09:43 .X11-unix)?
-If the permissions are not right, does fixing them work as a solution?
-Does the problem occur with other applications as well?
-Have you installed some proprietary drivers?

I'm having the same problem as Alexander.Viator's. So far Evolution
isn't able to download data from my google calendar. Even after erasing
the account with gconf-editor (impossible other way) and re-creating it
again (it doesn't ask for a password)

  No remote (Google/CalDav) calendars and remote contacts works in
  Evolution. When clicking on Google Calendar or a CalDav calendar
  nothing happens except for Evolution hanging for a while. All
  calendars are blank and I'm not able to add any events to any calendar
  not even to the local calendar. Calendars worked until yesterday
  (April 9). There's no drop down calendar in the notification area
  either.

banshee imports a xspf playlist with radio entries, but then it cannot
make use of it and freezes completely. Clementine has no problem with

Public bug reported:

The soon-to-be introduced Upstart feature that allows job output to be
logged has shown that lightdm is outputting a lot of data to
stdout/stderr.

/etc/init/lightdm.conf currently just execs lightdm so a quick fix is to
run instead:

  exec lightdm /dev/null 21

However, maybe lightdm should not be outputting such data by default?

  superbly. The upgrade has mis read my video card, therefore everything
