However, when I eventually did lose power and later rebooted, the document had become 0 bytes long. LibreOffice was not able to restore the auto-saved copy either. As a result, I have lost a whole week of notes for one of my courses. After researching online, it seems that this is caused by the application not calling fsync() (or fdatasync()) when saving files. Due to delayed allocation in modern filesystems, there is no guarantee that the new file's data has actually been written to disk unless the application calls fsync. So if an app writes a new file and replaces the old one with it without fsync'ing the new one first then there is a window of opportunity during which a power failure will result in the loss of BOTH versions of the file. In ext4 this window is also much larger than in ext3. Theodore Tso blogged about this at http://ldn.linuxfoundation.org/blog- entry/delayed-allocation-and-zero-length-file-problem and http://www.linuxfoundation.org/news-media/blogs/browse/2009/03/don%E2%80 %99t-fear-fsync. He strongly recommends to call fsync in this situation. Please update LibreOffice to fsync() saved files so that other users do not lose their data like I did. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 901896] Re: scrambled words in LibreOffice
sabine, you are not using a software package provided by the official Ubuntu repositories (external font files from languagegeek.com). Because of this the Ubuntu project can not support or fix your particular bug. Your welcome to remove the external fonts, install the ttf-lg-aboriginal package provided by the Ubuntu repositories, which includes Secwepemctsin, and try to reproduce the problem. If reproducible please create a new bug via the Terminal: ubuntu-bug libreoffice-writer If you insist on using external font files, your welcome to send this to the developers of the software by following the instructions at http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/BugReport . [Desktop-packages] [Bug 836250] Re: [Oneiric] [Regression] Intel Corporation Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 poor networking, packet loss and very slow Lenovo X201 and T500 laptops
After reading through this chain, I'm not entirely sure what I can/should do at this point to get a reasonably stable connection until all of the fixes come through. I'm on a Dell Studio 1558 machine with Intel Wireless card. When I start doing anything with any significant download, my Netgear WNDR3300 AP crashes and restarts. I had been running DD-WRT on that router, but based on these issues I reverted it to standard firmware with no improvements. I'm running in G mode, but I don't believe I have the disable N option set at this point. I'm also dealing with a backlight issue that Kamal fixed via PPA, so switching kernels is a bit tricky. $ - uname -a Linux craig-Studio15 3.0.0-14-generic #23+kamal~fix~stuck~backlight4-Ubuntu SMP Fri Nov 25 23:59:25 UT x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux 03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Centrino Advanced-N 6200 (rev 35) I'm running Network manager and I'm willing to switch to WICD if it will get me a stable connection. I'm OK if the connection isn't N if it doesn't crash the AP. I would appreciate some direction on best approach for the short term. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to network-manager in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/836250 Title: [Oneiric] [Regression] Intel Corporation Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 poor networking, packet loss and very slow Lenovo X201 and T500 laptops Status in The Linux Kernel: In Progress Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Triaged Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in “linux” source package in Oneiric: Triaged Status in “network-manager” source package in Oneiric: Confirmed Status in “linux” source package in Precise: Triaged Status in “network-manager” source package in Precise: Confirmed Bug description: This may be either network-manager or kernel, depending on triage... I have verified this on both a Lenovo X201 and a Lenovo T500 laptop. Both work perfectly with fully updated 10.10 and 11.04 versions of Ubuntu. However, booting into a fully updated 11.10 (as of 28/08/11) I get very poor wireless networking performance. Between 6-10% packet loss, very very slow connection and transfer rate. All in all, practically unusable. I have reported the bug on the X201 laptop, I will add the similar logs from the T500 also if required. As soon as I swap back to either 10.10 or 11.04 I get perfect wireless, it's only on 11.10 that I get problems, this would suggest it's not hardware or configuration on my side. I have had this since first installing 11.10 which was a little after Alpha 2. Wired connection is fine. Wolf Rogner, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem. At a minimum, we need: 1. the specific, steps click-by-click you took that caused you to encounter the problem, 2. the behavior you expected, and 3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible). 4. An example document that when you perform the above mentioned specific steps click-by-click, demonstrates this problem. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 723367] Re: Strings in help not translated
** Changed in: ubuntu-translations Status: New = Invalid ** Changed in: software-center (Ubuntu) Status: New = Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to software-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/723367 Title: Strings in help not translated Status in Ubuntu Translations: Invalid Status in “software-center” package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: Binary package hint: software-center The following things where left untranslated when i compiled a web version of the help files. It seams to relate to line breaks in the original files that are not in the POT. If you are familiar with reporting bugs in software, you can help out by reporting the problem to the Ubuntu developers. Most programs have a guimenuitemReport a Problem/guimenuitem item in their guimenuHelp/guimenu menu. In the guilabelGet Software/guilabel section, find the thing you want to install. If you already know its name, try typing the name in the search field. Or try searching for the type of program you want (like “spreadsheet”). Otherwise, browse the list of departments. To install something with Ubuntu Software Center, you need administrator access and a working Internet connection. (If you set up Ubuntu on this computer yourself, you have administrator access automatically.) For most programs, once they are installed, you can launch them from the Applications menu. (Utilities for changing settings may appear inside System → Preferences or System → Administration instead). To find out where to launch a new program, navigate to the screen for that program in Ubuntu Software Center, if it is not still being displayed. The menu location should be displayed on that screen, below the colored bar. Some items, such as media playback or Web browser plugins, do not appear in the menus. They are used automatically when Ubuntu needs them. For a Web browser plugin, you may need to close the browser and reopen it before the plugin will be used. To remove software, you need administrator access. (If you set up Ubuntu on this computer yourself, you have administrator access automatically.) Select the item in the list, and choose Remove. You may need to enter your Ubuntu password. If a program is open when you remove it, usually it will stay open even after it is removed. As soon as you close it, it will no longer be available. Sometimes if you try to remove one item, Ubuntu Software Center will warn you that other items will be removed too. There are two main reasons this happens. Multiple applications are sometimes provided as a single package. If any of them are installed, all of them are installed. And if any of them are removed, all of them are removed. Ubuntu Software Center cannot remove them individually, because it has no instructions on how to separate them. You can use the Main Menu settings to hide unwanted items without removing them from the computer. In Ubuntu, you can find Main Menu inside System → Preferences. In Ubuntu Netbook Edition, it is in Settings → Preferences. Customizing the menu bar Some of the software available for Ubuntu is maintained by Canonical. Canonical engineers ensure that security fixes and other critical updates are provided for these programs. Other software is maintained by the Ubuntu developer community. Any updates are provided on a best-effort basis. To pay for commercial software, you need an Internet connection, and an Ubuntu Single Sign On account or Launchpad account. If you do not have an account, Ubuntu Software Center will help you register one. If you accidentally removed software that you purchased, and you want it back, choose File → Reinstall Previous Purchases. First, check that View → All Software is selected. Other then that it seamed to work :/ It may save time to fix bug 723244 at the same time as this bug. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 902085] Re: Libreoffice Calc conditional formatting error
I am sorry that my patience is very limited with this one. I think the steps in my description pretty much tell you what to do. Just try to conditionally format a cell to green background if it contains a specific value: ZILCH Try to format two cells to red and green according to two specific values (say 1 and 0) but leave a third cell blank: ZILCH Now turn to the Monopolists spreadsheet application and look how it works (for my expected behaviour): YEP I elaborated on this error once. It got fixed, fine. Now its here again. What shall I take from this. The menubar bug only manifests with gnome-settings-daemon running. I have tested it on dwm, awesome, i3, openbox, gnome classic and gnome shell, and the bug manifested in all three tiling window managers. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 388656] Re: Non-intuitive term Move to trash
Does anyone ever say this in an office setting: Hey George, where'd you put the file I was looking at this morning? Oh, that one? I moved it to the trash. But I can restore it. No, of course not. That's stupid. If anyone said that I'd think they were an idiot. So why does my OS come off that way, especially one that got almost everything else so right, to the point where I am continually amazed? It makes me feel sad and disgusted. Congrats for not flat-out copying Microsoft, but is copying Apple any better? As someone who has had to use a Mac for almost 2 years at work, I'm absolutely positive that OSX is not an extremely worthy model to imitate, either. We don't need a system of metaphors designed to completely obfuscate the terms that have evolved to describe things most accurately already. On a computer when you get rid of a file, regardless of any potential holding bin, the concept is that you have decided to part with it forever. That fact that it can still be restored, somehow, is NOT a conscious part of the workflow at hand. It is merely an artifact of the virtual nature of computers. A file can be restored, sure, but that fact exists outside of the conscious workflow. So why does my OS make me consider irrelevant information? The fact that computers are virtual and operations can be reversed or undone is immaterial. If you're working on a song, you can delete a note. If you're writing a story, you can delete a paragraph. Conceptually, it's gone at that point, erased from your conscious work. Likewise, you can delete/erase/remove/discard a file, in terms of a file management app. It's NOT a movement or a relocation, conceptually. The operation I have in mind when I throw something out is not to store it. It's to DISCARD it, generally forever. I'm DONE with it. It's no longer in the picture. Move to trash by no means describes what I'm doing. For all I care, the janitor can take whatever I put in there, and haul it away, all without any further consideration from me. (Besides, trash cans in real life have discarded gum and tissues. Sick!) So aside from just being irrelevant, the metaphor being used doesn't even correctly describe the situation. It's a unix system, so maybe the item should be Remove file. That'd be fine. Delete is fine, too. It corresponds with the undelete operation. The reverse operation of remove would be restore. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/388656 Title: Non-intuitive term Move to trash Status in One Hundred Paper Cuts: Confirmed Status in Nautilus: New Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: Binary package hint: nautilus When browsing through file context menu, I've noticed that I couldn't find a command to delete it. Only after examining each item, I found Move to trash. IMHO it's unintuitive. An user doesn't want to move a file/folder, but to remove it (the fact that there's an undo - a trash, shouldn't change the terminology). The term move misses what user wants to do. Simple Delete would be *much easier to spot*, especially when the menu has many items (16 in my case). It would be simpler and it would be shorter. When user enables permanent deleting in preferences, the term could be Delete permanently. The issue was already raised many times before in some places (e.g. http://www.mail-archive.com/usability@gnome.org/msg03430.html - see 4. Move to Trash or http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1007979 - task Search sample document from a specific option, delete and then restore it.) but no action was taken. Ok, so this is a side-effect of no longer using gdk_cursor_new_from_pixmap (as it's not available in GTK3). gdk_cursor_new_from_pixmap uses XCreatePixmapCursor to create a cursor, and this does some magic via libxcursor to match a hash of the cursor bitmap to a themed pointer (left_ptr_watch), which gave us the nice looking pointer. There doesn't seem to be any support in xlib or gdk for creating a pointer of this type with any other mechanism though :( -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to firefox in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/901838 Title: Ugly busy cursor in Thunderbird 9 Status in The Mozilla Firefox Browser: Confirmed Status in “firefox” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in “thunderbird” package in Ubuntu: Triaged Status in “firefox” source package in Oneiric: Confirmed Status in “thunderbird” source package in Oneiric: Triaged Bug description: Something changed starting in Thunderbird 9, and it now displays a fairly ugly black busy cursor briefly when refreshing mailboxes ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.04 Package: thunderbird 9.0~b2+build1-0ubuntu1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.1.0-2.3-generic 3.1.0 Uname: Linux 3.1.0-2-generic x86_64 AddonCompatCheckDisabled: True AlsaVersion: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.24. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 833701] Re: math objects inherit automatic font color
Fritz Heinrichmeyer, thank you for taking the time to report this and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We understand the difficulties you are facing, but it is better to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. You can also find a valid support at http://askubuntu.com or posting your question in the support forum of your local Ubuntu's community. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs. Regarding your comments: + automatic font color controls presentation of text in libreoffice. Unfortunately it also determines the default color of math objects. This is as designed. + If this color is i.e. dark grey black and white printers dither and small characters are therefore disturbed. The print quality of your Math objects are dependent on your printer quality settings and capabilities. + I found no gui for changing default math object colors. The way to change the default color for Math objects is Tools - Options - LibreOffice - Appearance - under General change the Font Color Color Setting drop down from Automatic to whatever color you desire. ** Changed in: libreoffice (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Invalid ** Converted to question: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libreoffice/+question/181526 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to libreoffice in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/833701 Title: math objects inherit automatic font color Status in “libreoffice” package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: automatic font color controls presentation of text in libreoffice.
