guess something should at least recommend that.

I was affected by this bug from the gdm side (my gdm session crashed,
taking away all my X sessions whenever a user was added or deleted).

I can confirm that installing the new accountservice packages provided
by H.-Dirk Schmitt fixes the bug for me.

I'm not sure if a full backport is needed.  Maybe we could just backport
the patch?  I'll have a look at the changes and see how hard that could
be.

  Hi. I recently upgraded to Lucid beta on my laptop from karmic. Things
  seemed ok. Today I noticed that all but two (which may be new) of my
  tomboy notes have disappeared. There's still a stack in .tomboy but
  only two in .local/share/tomboy. This makes me very sad :-(

  I suspect that tomboy may not be the culprit, and the culprit may be
  ubuntu-one which I've struggled to get going (without much success).

  I doubt there's anything you can do to help me (unless there's a super
  secret place where tomboy notes are copied to) but I felt I should
  file an issue just incase there's something you can do for others.

  Possibly related after upgrade/ubuntu one usage all of my podcasts
  disappeared from rhythmbox and I had to resubscribe. No idea if the
  two things are related.

  I've been using Ubuntu since warty days and this is the first time an
  upgrade has resulted in data loss!

this is the only way for updating the system.

Bug description:
  Network Manager in Precise uses a local forwarding DNS server
  (dnsmasq).  This does not perform DNSSEC validation, although it is
  configured to proxy the DNSSEC validation result from the upstream
  server, for which the manpage mentions the following caveat:

  You should only do this if you trust all the configured upstream
  nameservers and the network between you and them.

  Since not all networks or upstream DNS servers are trustworthy, the
  safest place to perform DNSSEC validation is on the client.  Using a
  local DNS server which cannot validate is a missed opportunity; by
  replacing dnsmasq with a more-capable DNS server (e.g. Unbound)
  security against DNS poisoning and MITM attacks could be improved.

  The Estonian national ID card is used daily to access public services
  and to perform online banking transactions by Estonian citizens all
  around the globe and by foreigners living in Estonia. It therefore is
  expected that whoever installs support for this language would also
  require support for the national ID card by standard.

  Packages to provide Estonian national ID card support have been
  developped over the last two years via the PPA for team esteid and
  have recently entered NEW for the Precise release. It would be
  desirable for these packages to be added to language-selector's
  dependencies for Estonian, starting with Precise Beta 2.

  Additionally, it would be desirable for myself to have PPU rights for

  nameserver in /etc/resolv.conf didn't update when changing network

  When changeing network and connecting to a new router,(sitecom cfe88)
  i couldn't surf. Surfing worked in windows in my dual boot, and in
  another lan a home, so i knew it should work. Everything seemed ok
  in nw-manager - connected fine, got an ip and so on - and i had turned
  off ipv6 just to be sure. Then i had a look at /etc/resolv.conf - and
  there it was - it had one nameserver entry, and it was the one from my
  homenetwork - wtf. I changed that manually to the router i was
  connecting to - and it worked.

  Now, why didn't it update this by itself when switching networks. A
  less techical user would be stuck.

Bug description:
  Since NetworkManager uses dnsmasq to resolve its DNS names, it
  sometimes enables the system to use dnsmasq before the network
  connection has been successfully established. This causes dnsmasq to
  try and fail to resolve some hostnames, it then caches them to its
  negative DNS cache.

  To prevent this from happening I had to add no-negcache to
  /etc/dnsmasq.d/network-manager

  Should this be the default? I don't think any endpoint user benefits
  from negative DNS cache, not even network admins as the DNS system is
  robust enough to handle those.

  About 5% of DNS queries resolve to 0.0.0.0.

  A couple of times an hour during normal browsing, Firefox resolves a
  domain to 0.0.0.0. Opening the same site in Chrome has a 50% chance of
  it working, then it normally works after a few reloads. Thunderbird
  has also occasionally resolved googlemail.com to 0.0.0.0. Domains
  include google.com, wikipedia.org, harvestapp.com and many more.

  I couldn't reproduce this with dig/nslookup for a while, but after 5
  minutes of (re)trying random domains) did:

  setting it to my router's DNS server, with no effect).

  Global menu in general (not only in Unity) is very unergonomic on large 
screens (see the attached screenshot) because if you have a small window 
somewhere near the low right corner you have to move the cursor all the way up 
to to panel to reach the menu. I understand why the global menu was used for 
the netbook edition (it saves space and most windows are maximized), but since 
Unity is intended to be for the desktop edition there should be an option to 
switch to the traditional position of the app menu. It would be welcomed by 
many desktop users. Please try to find a solution for it that works.

  A commonly suggested solution is:

   [ ] Global Menu off
   [ ] Global Menu only for maximized windows
  The default is usually suggested as either the first (on) or last (on only 
for maximized windows).

  NetworkManager/dnsmasq does not set the DNS servers given by openvpn
  server when I connect. I can see in my syslog that I do receive the
  name servers correctly along with all the routes:

  resources on the VPN network and others through my default DNS. Let me

As of Ubuntu 12.10 you can't deal with bug #1003842 (dnsmasq sometimes
fails to resolve private names in networks with non-equivalent
nameservers) by turning on strict-order in
/etc/NetworkManager/dnsmasq.d/. The reason is that, since 12.10, NM
sends nameserver addresses to dnsmasq over D-Bus; and in that case the
order of the nameservers is not preserved.

  tertiary backup of 8.8.8.8.  If I only connect wired or wireless,

  appears to invert the first list sent to dnsmasq, and I end up unable

  This appears to be similar or identical to bug 577380, but I didn't

  didn't want to upload this information there (as confusion could
  result if the author of that report then also provides the requested

  Please let me know if there is other information I should provide. In
  particular, I'd be willing to try to create a small, redistributable

  I installed Intrepid fresh onto this laptop (HP Pavilion dv9540us),
  and the alert sounds don't play.  Instead, whenever I make one of the
  rather common mistakes that cause an alert sound (such as hitting
  backspace one too many times), there's a very loud, and very annoying,
  beep from the internal speaker.

  If I go to system-preferences-sound, where I would expect to disable
  the annoying beep, I find that the System Beep tab is now gone.  I
  agree with this decision - this is 2008, we should never be using the
  internal speaker for anything.  Especially not shutdown noises, where
  it's not even obvious how to disable it.

  After googling, however, I found that many others have this problem,
  and strangely enough the solution is to click disable alert sounds
  even though the alert sound itself never plays.

  So, there are two bugs here then: 
  1) The nice alert sound isn't used at all. I've never heard it in Ubuntu, 
only annoying PC speaker beeps.
  2) We use the PC speaker instead of the alert sound, and disabling the PC 
speaker is difficult since we no longer have the system beep tab.

  Users, working on a lan with many printers, report that it's difficult for

  search/filter/sort the list of printers.

  Typeahead is working, but it's not really obvious (so some users don't know
  about it) and only works on the printer names, not on their location.

  Some possible improvements:
  - providing a way to search/filter in the list, taking into account names and
  locations
  - make the columns sortable, that would allow users to, at least, sort by
  location
  - sort the most used printers always first

  When one prints to PDF/PS/SVG from Firefox, the filename defaults to
  .pdf or .ps or .svg

  These filenames are hidden by default by in GNOME and it is my opinion that 
this is a bad practice.
  If one forgets to specify a filename then the file is hidden in the user's 
home directory.  This could potentially be very confusing for a new user to 
Linux, Ubuntu, or GNOME.  Even I spent a while looking for a file I printed 
that I had forgotten to specify a filename for.  If it is possible, I would 
like to see a default filename of [Window_Title].pdf or at least output.pdf
  Might this be suitable for inclusion in the current round of paper cuts?

  I also checked the same dialog in Chromium and it defaulted to
  output.pdf

I have no idea whose this is.  I think Lanuchpad admins need a Question
to kill it.

The distro security updates should have 28.0.1500.52 as of last week, so
there is really no way that this PPA is doing anything except in
people's heads.

  I installed Ubuntu 12.04.2 (precise-desktop i386) on a Samsung
  notebook with 768MB RAM and 120G harddisk.

  The default partitioning scheme suggested a 784MB swap partition as
  hda5 (extended) and the rest as root (ext4). This is far too small to
  enable suspend to disk (which needs roughly the amount of RAM _plus_
  the amount of swap in use when suspending as swap space). I later had
  to resize the ext4 partition and enlarge the swap partition to be able
  to use the system.

  I have not found any information about how Ubuntu decides about partitioning 
(swap space especially). IMHO:
  Swap + RAM should be at least 4GB and swap should be = 1,5*RAM and  
RAM+500MB to be able to enable suspend to disk.
  For 768MB RAM, this means at least 3,25G swap.
  For 2GB RAM, this means at least 3GB swap etc.

Since it may not be obvious, the best way to get stable chromium-browser
is to use the distro's default APT source, which should include the
security feed.  The only way a PPA will have something newer than that
for more than a few days is if the PPA has a version that is broken.

I have the same issue, both on a desktop which (was using) an Asus n-15 PCIe 
card. (now using Ethernet)
and a Laptop Lenovo Thinkpad t430 which is my work laptop. I use a partition on 
my external harddrive at home to boot Ubuntu off. I have also noticed that this 
bug persists inside of both Ubuntu 12.10, 13.04 / Mint 14 and 15

If the bug is in 13.04 then it is pretty much going to be inside Mint 15
too.

I can connect to the wifi first time around, after 10 minutes it will
stop loading pages, and then start to prompt me for the security key
(which is already entered and seen as **) I confirm and it will just
ask me again. I have tried removing the password and re-entering it and
the problem still persists.

This bug has completely rendered Ubuntu/Mint useless to me without WiFi.
which is a shame.

  version 25 (7 versions ahead of the chromium-daily ppa) and the
  timestamp of last maintenance in chromium-daily is 14 months old at
  the time of this bug report.

  The inactive PPA should be shut down or maintained. It causes
  substantially more confusion than good. If no one wants to maintain
  it, shut it down pendining someone else picking up the job.

  When I enable Grid with kbd shortcut that doesn't display in menu (Grid isn't 
checked). Same problem is when I disable grid with kbd shortcut. This isn't a 
big bug/problem, but this is sometimes frustrate.

  I am using inkscape-trunk on Ubuntu 12.04.2 with Unity.

  I'm using Ubuntu Online Accounts in my system, but if I try to configure a new
  gmail-based account through the Evolution accounts wizard, at the end of the
  process, nothing happens: evolution doesn't show my new account, and UOA is

  asking for the credentials (only the evolution configuration files mention 
it).

  The only way I've found to use a gmail account (both with gmail.com and a
  custom domain) in evolution is to configure it from UOA g-c-c panel.

  I think that Evolution should at least notify the user that it's impossible to
  add a such account, instead of just failing silently.

I send you the screen photos i had mentioned to you during the problems i was 
facing,
I have just few minutes ago switch the Greek above English language,to see if i 
get an difference in the problem i face there
The usb plugs still is here ,actually one or two hours ago i had to send a 
ubuntu-bug linux report ,i hope you can see it ,the speakers few times had cone 
off and finally they were creatting a sound,which i couldn't hear,but i was 
feelling as a pain in my ears.I know this feelling because years ago ,when i 
was living in Canada ,in my restaurant we were using an ultra-sound machine to 
keep the place clean of rats(it is a major problem in the old town in Montreal)
I still have the headache,and a very strange noise in my ears!!!
May be all these sound a little bit crazy , but i need your trust about it 
I do not know who is doing all these but definitely i know that wherever i read 
and save as PDFs some ...people they don't like them ,even if i am not 
uploading anything.I JUST WANT TO LEARN,

I have to tell you also that when i send an email by my email account which you 
have from me too,and trying to forward it after ,if i try to erase the adresses

Quite often when this happens, my mouse also loses control, is if its a
hacking attempt, or as if my computer has been successfully hijacked for
a little while. Don't see anything else wrong with the system. Have been
updating the system as the ubuntu updates have become available. I
started investigating this problem, because my mouse would start running
on its own.

Would really like to know the solution to this problem.

  I run a hybrid setup of Intel/Ati 7670M.

  Simply open a graphic (png, jpeg) and try to drag the graphic as if

reproducable with 12.04 LibreOffice as well as LibreOffice 4.0.4 from
the PPA

Steps to reproduce:

1. Remove libreoffice settings
rm -rf ~/.config/libreoffice
2. open libreoffice impress
3. Select Insert-Animated Gif.

Result: Window behind the top Unity Panel
Expected: to open below the Unity Panel or to be added to the docked.

Workaround:
Repeat steps 1,2,3 and press ctrl+shift+f10 the window will be docked.

Title:
  Xorg + Unity/ Compiz broken in 13.04 PPC Live cd

Bug description:
  Booting without any extra parameters gets the general strange
  colors+pseudo 8 bit problem.

  So I tried the old standby, booting with live
  video=radeonfb:1024x768-32@60 which will usually get something
  running. This got me a black screen that had popup notifications
  (Ubuntu 13.04 had a critical error, and network not connected). So I
  ctl-alt-F2'd into terminal, and ran ubuntu-bug, copied the URL for
  this, and then startx. Startx got me to a desktop background, with the
  desktop icons on it (install ubuntu and some information folder). I've
  got no Unity interface, no window stuff, but through the folder I was
  able to find xterm, and do what I need to do so I can make the bug
  report. The colors are good at least!

  When a file is hidden, users expect it to be hidden. Same for files
  contained in hidden directories. This can be a privacy problem for
  many people.

  [Test Case]

  1. Put a file in a hidden folder (name of the folder starting with ., the 
name of the file without .) - try with jpeg, it's easier to spot
  2. Open the file and close it after that
  3. Open the Dash and start typing the name of the previously closed file

  Files contained in hidden directories often show up in files lens,
  which might and might not be desired - it can be useful in cases where
  you need to often search for and edit a configuration file for some
  application/service (which usually reside in hidden directories), yet
  many users think that by putting files into hidden directories these
  are no longer displayed anywhere.

  The problem is that by putting a file into hidden directories, you no
  longer see the file in file browsers etc, but accessing the file still
  logs its usage in eg Zeitgeist, and users need to use the dedicated
  Privacy settings panel to ensure access to such resources is not
  logged.

  We should have clear guidelines on when to use which to ensure
  consistent behaviour throughout the system.

  Original description:

  I don't think that it's a normal behavior, since after fixing the bug
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/756280 the hidden files are not
  visible anymore in the Files  Folders Lens, so should be the content
  of hidden folders. I wrote couple of comments on the bug for the
  files, but nobody reopened the issue, so I had to make a new one.

Took me longer than expected due to the amount of code involved, but
with a little help from git bisect I was able to identify the fixing
patch, which was a very simple one.

It just removes a duplicate call to g_free that shouldn't have been
there.

This was applied upstream from version 0.6.17 onwards, so only precise
is affected.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
  libaccountsservice contains a double free which under certain circumstances 
will cause accounts-daemon to segfault, and under other circumstances will 
cause gdm to segfault when a user account is added or removed.

  [Test case]
  In a precise machine with kerberos authentication, adding a new user via 
sudo adduser test will cause an X session running under GDM to crash with a 
segfault.

  Once the patch is applied, running the same command line should not
  affect a running X session.  For the test to have value, the session
  needs to have been started after the new accountsservice packages were
  installed.

  [Possible regressions]
  This is just one line removing a double free that has been applied upstream 
for 16 months, so the code itself should be fine.  To be certain that 
everything is alright, not only gdm but also lightdm should be tested.

  [Original description]

Hi, the SRU uploaded is missing information which identifies which fix
is which patch. They are both muddled together and it is basically
impossible to discern what is what. Please add information to the
changelog explaining how it was fixed, or comment the changes, so that
we can tell which change belongs to which bug.

In addition, bug #1158969 is missing the required SRU information. It
has been waiting for an answer for over a month, so I'm rejecting the
upload.

Bug description:
  I'm trying to log in to my Google apps account through the Online
  Accounts dialog and so far I've been unsuccessful.

  From the online accounts dialog, after the Google login page, I'm then
  taken to the Ubuntu SSO page, but when I enter my SSO user name and
  password, I get a blank screen with an error message that doesn't give
  me any pointers as to what's happened (see attached screenshot).

  I'm also attaching the output generated by invoking signon-ui from the
  command line with  SSOUI_LOGGING_LEVEL=2

  Additional information for the SRU request:

  [Impact] Makes it impossible to create Google apps accounts linked to
  Ubuntu SSO (and possibly others).

  [Test Case] Open Online Accounts, click on Add account, choose
  Google, then enter your e-mail address (leave the password field
  empty), and press Sign in. Follow the instructions, but if the bug
  is not fixed you'll soon be presented with the error message from
  comment #2. If the bug is fixed, the account creation should complete
  successfully.

  [Regression Potential] The code paths touched by this patch are only
  hit when a web page fails to load; we simply delay reporting the error
  by 3 seconds, and cancel the error condition if in the meantime the
  WebView has shown some signs of activity. So, this patch should not
  affect the successful creation of other accounts, but just add a small
  delay to the ones failing because of network errors.

  My DISPLAY variable is set, but XAUTHORITY is not (since the apt-
  get(8) invocation is running as root via sudo).

  The software-center upgrade script(s) should not be making any use of
  X11 whatsoever, whether DISPLAY is set or not.

Bug description:
  With Unity 5.20.0-0ubuntu1 from -proposed, maximized windows opened
  during login by autostarting apps have their top bar visible
  underneath the desktop top bar (indicator-appmenu) as if unmaximized,
  but with the window 'maximize' button indicating a maximized window -
  i.e. first click on it results in the window getting smaller. The
  second click on it then actually maximizes the window so that the top
  bar merges into the desktop top bar (indicator-appmenu).

  This problem appears consistently on every login, after I've enabled
  -proposed and installed Unity 5.20 from there. It never appears when I
  have 5.18 from -updates. Annoyingly, I am unable to reproduce it in a
  VM (for a nice demonstration video), but I am able to reproduce it
  with a newly created user account on the host (i.e. without the
  configuration from my main user account).

  I could've taken a screenshot of how it looks right after login. I'll
  do that in a minute.

  * Update and simplify our trigger for gtk-query-immodules-2.0, use the new
--update-cache option instead of redirecting stdout.
  * Update postrm to clean up the renamed immodules.cache file.
