[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1412729] Re: system-config-printer crashes when assigning a downloadable non-free Epson driver to a detected printer

2015-01-24 Thread Till Kamppeter
Updated my Utopic system and got the proposed package. Now the Epson
drivers install correctly. The package description/confirmation screen
appears with the correct license text and after confirming the package
gets installed.

Title:
  system-config-printer crashes when assigning a downloadable non-free
Epson driver to a detected printer

Status in system-config-printer package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in system-config-printer source package in Trusty:
  In Progress
Status in system-config-printer source package in Utopic:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
If a newer Epson printer which is not (yet) supported by Gutenprint is
connected and set up, system-config-printer crashes when it finds the
appropriate driver package from Epson via OpenPrinting. This is due to
the fact that the Epson driver entries on the OpenPrinting web site do
not contain the long license textst inline but in one centralized text
file on Epson's web site. The driver entries only contain links to
  this file.

system-config-printer does only support inline license texts and
crashes on this kind of driver entries.

  [Impact]

Users of newer Epson inkjet printers are not able to set up their
printers because system-config-printer crashes when choosing such a
printer in the list of detected printers.

  [Test Case]

If you do not have one of the mentioned printers, create a file named
  /usr/lib/cups/backend/testbackend containing the line

  echo 'direct usb://EPSON/XP-215%20217%20Series EPSON XP-215 217
  Series EPSON XP-215 217 Series
  MFG:EPSON;CMD:ESCPL2,BDC,D4,D4PX,ESCPR2;MDL:XP-215 217
  Series;CLS:PRINTER;DES:EPSON XP-215 217 Series; '

and make it world-readable and -executable:

  sudo chmod a+rx /usr/lib/cups/backend/testbackend

This emulates an Epson XP-215/217 printer on USB, at least for CUPS'
  printer discovery facility.

Start system-config-printer and click the Add button. In the printer
setup wizard choose the Epson XP-215 217 Series printer under the
detected printers. There will pop up Searching driver messages
several times but in the end system-config-printer crashes.

With the proposed packages for Utopic and Trusty the driver selection
screen will appear offering to download Epson's driver for this
printer and after accepting the license the driver gets installed and
the printer set up with this driver.

  [Regression Potential]

Regression potential is low, as the fix only affects the code for
retreiving the driver database record from OpenPrinting and displaying
it on the driver selection screen. All other functionality of system-
  config-printer is unchanged.

  RICOH AficioSG2100N driver not working

Status in Foomatic Database.:

Status in foomatic-db package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Hi,

I have a Ricoh Aficio 2100N (network connected). The RICOH
AficioSG2100N driver does not work: cups reports regular printing,
confirms successful transmission to the printer, printer blinks for
some seconds, but nothing happens. No error message.

  There's a (german) discussion under
http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/drucker-ricoh-aficio-sg2100n-installieren/
telling that a special ipsio driver from Ricoh would be required and that this
driver would require further patches.

  See also:

 also (english)
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refined_Printing_Command_Stream

Maybe it's to complex for Ubuntu to support a special printer. However, it
does not make sense to include a non-working ppd/driver.

WORKAROUND: Highlight text - secondary click text - primary click
Paragraph... - Indents Spacing tab (notice it states under Line
spacing the drop down box is Proportional with the combo box to the
right is 80%) - change the Line spacing drop down to Single - OK
  button

WORKAROUND: Highlight text - secondary click text - primary click
Paragraph... - Indents Spacing tab - change the combo box to the
right of the Proportional drop down to 100% - OK button

  WORKAROUND: Use Abiword.

  Original Reporter comments:

In OO writer, in a table row where height is fit to size - the
paragraph line spacing affects the row height for single lines of text
after upgrading from ubuntu hardy/openoffice 2.4 to lucid/openoffice
  3.2.

In OO 2.4, the row height wasn't affected by the line spacing defined
for paragraphs in rows with single lines of text.

This seems to only arise in documents where the fo:line-height is less
than 100% (eg. if paragraph line spacing set to proportional 80%).

In order to fix a document with ubuntu OO 3.2, you need to select
the table, right-click, Line Spacing - Single (or 1.5 or double).
Line spacing should only affect row height when *more* than one line
exists, since as the term implies, its the space between lines.

[SRU] Window manager keybindings don't work after reboot

Title:
  shortcut changes not persistent

Status in xdg-utils package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
When I change the shortcut left_workspace_key from Ctrl-Alt-Left to Ctrl-Left
that works fine. Same for right_workspace_key.
However, after reboot, the shortcut does not work anymore, although the
graphical interface to the settings manager still says that the shortcut is
Ctrl-Left.

Before changing the shortcuts, the config file contains:

  property name=lt;Controlgt;lt;Altgt;Left type=string
value=left_workspace_key/
  property name=lt;Primarygt;lt;Altgt;Right type=string
value=right_workspace_key/

(why Control for the first and Primary for the other??)

After changing, the original settings are still there:

  property name=lt;Controlgt;lt;Altgt;Left type=string
value=left_workspace_key/
  property name=lt;Primarygt;lt;Altgt;Right type=string
value=right_workspace_key/
  property name=lt;Primarygt;Left type=string
value=left_workspace_key/
  property name=lt;Primarygt;Right type=string
value=right_workspace_key/

A possible solution is to remove the original setting by editing the
config file. However, whenever any other shortcut is changed (not just
cleared), the removed settings are set back again.

geoclue-provider should be set to won't fix because upstream is not
going to fix it after geoclue2 is available.
