[Desktop-packages] [Bug 360970] Re: Multi-monitor - When using two displays with different vertical resolution, icons get lost on the shorter display
This bug is in 20.04 lts for me. Using Dell Precision with USB-C and HDMI and Quadro T2000/PCIe/SSE2 / Quadro T2000/PCIe/SSE2 Display cards Under settings, if I attach the external, the scalling goes out of wack. Laptop screen scalling changes zooms out, while the external screen scale zooms completely in. It's as if the adjustment is managing the wrong screen. Even if I try scalling the external screen, the laptop screen is impacted. Gotten to the point where I cannot use the external screens. You know how it is with coding, really great to have external screens to move stuff too. It's exactly like this https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/360970/+attachment/557624/+files/Screenshot-2.png Not sure it's related to nautilus, but you'd probably know better. It's as if the usb-c and hdmi ports are not getting the right signals. Also HDMI and USB-C can cause the OS to hang if I pull it in and out quickly. That area of 20.04 screen management setting is quite buggie for me. Hope you're able to address it soon as I really miss my external monitors. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/360970 Title: Multi-monitor - When using two displays with different vertical resolution, icons get lost on the shorter display Status in Ayatana Design: Fix Committed Status in Nautilus: Expired Status in Unity: Confirmed Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: On a Multi-Monitor setup, where the extended desktop is non- rectangular in shape (ie. the displays are of a different resolution, and their top/bottom/left/right edges are not aligned), desktop icons are placed in non-accessible areas when arranged using the menu option 'View-Organise Desktop by Name' from the Desktop. Attached Wacom tablet "Bamboo Fun CTH-661" in "Relative" mode via xsetwacom (behaves like a mouse instead of setting pointer to corresponding tablet position on screen). Issue: When setting the pen down fast, the pointer skips notably, as far as 10cm on my 27" display. Setting the pen down softly it does not occur, but the usual fast motion I apply when using the tablet it occurs a lot. It seems like in certain conditions, like going through the threshold at which the tablet recognizes the pen the value changes too quickly an overflown value goes into the X axis, but that's wild guess. Reverting to all: regular 18.04 kernel, xserver and xinput-wacom drivers the issue does not appear anymore. Tablet has been working fine for years. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1879968] Re: copy/paste still sometimes fails in LibreOffice on mutter 3.36.2
As some of you have noticed, the status for "Mutter" at the top of this page changed to "Fix Released". That's because a change was just committed to the Mutter GNOME project that apparently fixes the underlying bug: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/commit/2f1f47d25708cf444e4d35045486fa2841ce0d69 This change is not present in Mutter 3.36.3 or in any other release of Mutter. It should be included in the next Mutter release (presumably 3.36.4). So it is not yet available in Ubuntu, which is why the status for "Mutter (Ubuntu)" at the top of the page is still "Confirmed". In other words, a fix is now in Mutter (which is great news), and hopefully it will make its way to Ubuntu before long. But it's not there yet. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to mutter in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1879968 Title: copy/paste still sometimes fails in LibreOffice on mutter 3.36.2 Status in Mutter: Fix Released Status in mutter package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: In Ubuntu 19.10 and 20.04 there was a bug that caused copy and paste operations to fail pretty often: the text that was pasted was not the text that was just copied. See the long discussion at bug #1852183. The bug was recently marked closed, since the package mutter - 3.36.2-1ubuntu1~20.04.1 landed in focal-updates and makes the bug occur much less frequently. Unfortunately the bug still exists, and is not difficult to reproduce. I am running Ubuntu 20.04 and have the new 3.36.2-1ubuntu1~20.04.1 version of mutter. I just opened two LibreOffice Writer windows side by side, and repeatedly selected some text in the left window, copied it, then attempted to paste it into the right window. In my experiment, approximately 1 in every 20 paste operations failed: it did not paste the text that was just copied, but instead the text that was copied before that. Now, an error rate of 1 in 20 may not seem so bad. On the other hand, if you spend all day writing a document and copy and paste dozens of times during the day, then you may hit this bug multiple times per day (as I have been recently), which is a significant annoyance. I tested in LibreOffice since that is where I have seen the bug most often, but I have also seen it occur in other applications as well. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1866926] Re: Device validation failing when connected to an usb hub
Let me just explain shortly why I'm sticking with Tcl for the dispatcher. That script language is perfectly fitted for string and file parsing. At the same time, it's much better human-readable than a Bash or Perl script. I had people adding fixes to the wrapper script who weren't even familiar with the language. Execution time is not really relevant regarding the mode-switching process, because its duration predominantly depends on the device's internal workings until it 'reappears' in the new mode. Both the bare interpreter tclsh *and* the 'pocket version' (jimtcl) have everything on board for the task. No loading of additional extensions or modules required. Besides, I somehow can't warm up to Python but that's my personal issue :-) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to usb-modeswitch in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1866926 Title: Device validation failing when connected to an usb hub Status in usb-modeswitch package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Bug description: After upgrading to Ubuntu focal fossa development branch the usb_modeswitch does not seem to work any more on a Toshiba laptop. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1866926] Re: Device validation failing when connected to an usb hub
I'm starting to feel that trying to fix the C rewrite is futile. On line 392 of usb_modeswitch_dispatcher.c, the iface variable is overwritten. Unfortunately the value being assigned is not an interface number, it is rather a USB class number. Fixing this might help with some part of this, but it also might break something else. I was also trying to map between the C rewrite and the 2.2.5 version of the tcl script (as stated in the header of the C version), but it seems that there are functional differences (for example the if_chk mode seems to trigger on different ocassions). I'd vote for going with the Tcl version for Focal as well (I'm ignoring any existing SRU rules through). The dependency isn't a full Tcl interpreter, only a small library-based variant of it called Jim (http://jim.tcl.tk/index.html/doc/www/www/index.html). According to the package description, the library size is only 100-200 kB, which seems negligible compared to the current ISO sizes. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to usb-modeswitch in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1866926 Title: Device validation failing when connected to an usb hub Status in usb-modeswitch package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Bug description: After upgrading to Ubuntu focal fossa development branch the usb_modeswitch does not seem to work any more on a Toshiba laptop. To solve this: either skip validate_encryption_settings() when using any of this storage backends or introduce an option to skip the download manually (e.g. --skip-download-on-restart) I fixed it for me with manully skipping the validate_encryption_settings() function. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1886282] [NEW] Translation update of desktop guide
Public bug reported: [Impact] The changes mostly consist of updated translations and are proposed as a preparation for the 20.04.1 point release. (There are a couple of minor bug fixes too.) [Test Case] Open yelp, both with an English locale and some non-English locale, browse around and make sure there is nothing which prevents you from navigating the Help pages. [Regression Potential] "It's just docs", i.e. possible issues won't affect other parts of the system. With that said, and assuming that the test case is verified, the regression risk should be low. [Other] The source diffs may appear to be very large. The explanation is that, unlike in the upstream release tarballs, the localized pages are not included in the git snapshots we use as upstream for this upload. That does not matter for the binaries; we generate those localized pages at build time anyway. ** Affects: gnome-user-docs (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-user-docs in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1886282 Title: Translation update of desktop guide Status in gnome-user-docs package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: [Impact] The changes mostly consist of updated translations and are proposed as a preparation for the 20.04.1 point release. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1874217] Re: [nvidia] Dual monitor setup with secondary monitor in portrait-right mode cause tiled windows to occupy 1.5 monitors
Probably related: On Ubuntu 20.04 I can only rotate my right display using the "NVidia X Server Settings"-app. But although I save the configuration using the "Save to X Configuration File"-button, the rotation setting is reset to landscape after signing out or rebooting. Searching for this issue reveals dozens of new posts complaining about portrait mode not working anymore so maybe the bug priority could be increased? Many thanks -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1874217 Title: [nvidia] Dual monitor setup with secondary monitor in portrait-right mode cause tiled windows to occupy 1.5 monitors Status in gnome-control-center: Unknown Status in Mutter: Unknown Status in gnome-control-center package in Ubuntu: Triaged Status in mutter package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: I'm on Ubuntu 20.04 AMD64 fully up to date and freshly rebooted. I use dual screen : the main screen is on the left side (32"), the secondary screen (19") is at right and in portrait mode (rotated right). The window are improperly growed : they extend from full main screen to half the "witdh" of the secondary screen. Additionnally, the « pop-up » menus (eg. from settings) do not appear at the right place (see screen capture in comment). The problem disappears if I revert the orientation of secondary screen from « portrait turned right » to « landscape ». I do have gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock in version 67ubuntu20.04.5, but still got the problem. *** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1880405 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1880405 Daniel, how does one produce the shell journal log? On a regular basis, over time, my desktop becomes less and less usable. It starts with becoming noticeably slower, laggy, and eventually absolutely requiring a reboot since it becomes totally unusable. At the same time my my system load is low, and remains low, while gnome-shell appears only to take more and more CPU. I often see it using 30, 50, 90, and sometimes 100% CPU, while the rest is idle. It reaches the point where terminals don't easily The only "fix" is rebooting, or restarting X. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1879968] Re: copy/paste still sometimes fails in LibreOffice on mutter 3.36.2
It is not fixed in mutter 3.36.3 using libreoffice. I have checked and o have 3.36.3 installed (and rebooted) and tested again. It failed first time. It seems to me that there is something very odd going on here. How was the fix tested? This is second time it has been 'fixed' but users have found that it is still failing. I really do wonder whether the source of the problem has been correctly identified. I have Acer swift 3 SF314-42, I have tested on Kubuntu 20.04. Internal microphone doesn't work. I upgraded kernel to 5.7.7 but still doesn't work. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1885246] Re: Desktop freezes when moving window fast to other desktop
I removed all the AMD driver stuff and went back to the default 18.04 kernel and the original X.Org drivers and that seems to have solved the problem. Still strange that the AMD drivers would be that buggy, although maybe mixing all kinds of libraries, kernels, etc. may have worsened the problem, looking back. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to lightdm in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1885246 Title: Desktop freezes when moving window fast to other desktop Status in lightdm package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: For a long time sometimes my desktop freezes suddenly and it took me a long time to find when. It turns out sometimes the desktop freezes when I move a window fast from one desktop to another, normally I would move it to the right. OS is Ubuntu 18.04 and the issue occurs (as far as I remember) with the Open Source drivers and the AMD drivers. When using some default setting/driver the issue does not occur, but then screen updates are very slow. I am using an MSI H81M-P33 motherboard, processor i5-4460, AMD Radeon HD 7700 Series (according to AMD driver). Monitor is AOC 1920x1080. I tried many things, like different kernal versions and different drivers. The currently installed AMD drivers don't work with the 5.3 kernel. I did not recently use something like kernel 5.0, so I don't know if the issue is solved in later kernels. I found some similar reports, but they all or mostly seem to relate to laptops. While writing this report my desktop crashed again and I was not moving a window, but just resizing it from the top down. I can access the system through ssh and just changed the drivers from AMD pro to AMD open source. Not sure what the effect is. More details available if needed. I would appreciate this would be solved, as it is pretty annoying to restart my computer several times a day and sometimes losing work.
