[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1882525] Re: [amdgpu] MATE desktop is corrupted upon login on Ryzen APU

2020-07-25 Thread Thomas Szymczak
I've discovered some useful info about this bug. First, there's a forum
thread about it with lots of good info: https://ubuntu-
mate.community/t/20-04-display-issues-with-amd-gpu/21648/37

Second, a new workaround. To recap, the first workaround I found was
booting with nomodeset, but that disables all hardware acceleration. The
new workaround, as detailed in the forum thread, is to open MATE Tweak,
and in the Windows tab, change the window manager to Marco (no
compositor).

Third, we found the upstream bug in xf86-video-amdgpu:
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-amdgpu/-/issues/10
. I believe this is packaged as xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu in Ubuntu.
It's been fixed upstream and the Ubuntu Mate devs will include it in
20.04.1 is possible.

Fourth, bug #1873895 appears to be the same bug, but originally reported
as manifesting in Xubuntu. Maybe this is a duplicate.

** Bug watch added:

Bug description:
Today I upgraded from Ubuntu MATE 19.10 to 20.04. After doing so, Ubuntu
boots normally to the display manager (login screen) as expected. But once I
log in, everything on the screen is cut up into horizontal slices, with each
slice offset farther right than the slice above, and squares of random colors
running diagonally across the screen. I've attached a picture of my monitor
showing the issue for reference.
My hardware is a home-built PC with an ASUS Prime B450M motherboard, a Ryzen
3 2200G APU, and using that APU's integrated graphics.
In terms of software I'm running Ubuntu 20.04, which I just upgraded to and
did a software update on. I have Linux 5.4.0-33-generic, X.Org 1.20.8, and Mesa
20.0.4. Before I upgraded Ubuntu, I was affected by Bug #1880041 but it seems
fixed in the new kernel. I don't believe they're related but I figure it's
worth mentioning.
I tried adding the nomodeset kernel option at boot, and it's an effective
workaround. Also, I tried booting from an Ubuntu Mate 20.04 live USB to see if
this was caused by some quirk of my particular software setup, and successfully
reproduced the bug, proving it wasn't.
If you'd like me to, I can provide log files, system information, etc. or
help narrow it down by testing workarounds.

Title:
pulseaudio has is buggy with hdmi audio and sleep/wake

Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
on a fresh Ubuntu 20.04 x64 install, I've noticed some troubling bugs
with pulseaudio after putting my system to sleep and then waking it
up. these bugs aren't present on a fresh boot, only after resuming
  from sleep:

  - it forgets which sound output device it's set to, and always reverse to the
motherboard's S/PDIF output.
  - I have two devices connected to my video card, one is a displayport
monitor, and one is a home theater receiver via HDMI. it confuses the two, and
randomly switches which device it thinks is capable of surround sound.
  - it sometimes refuses to switch to the correct audio device, and just resets
any choice back to the internal S/PDIF, until the system is rebooted.

as you can imagine, this a pretty frustrating state of affairs.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1841551] Re: Update to 0.20.2

2020-07-25 Thread Peter J. Mello
Bump version in the title as another upstream release has been
published, link below.

Am I missing something here, isn't this a package that is something of a
keystone in the package maintenance toolchain? Couldn't we just cook one
up and release it on our end? If someone gives me the thumbs up I'll
even try to make something happen on that front myself.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1876991] Re: Touchpad started appearing both as a touchpad and as a mouse input devices after upgrade to 20.04

2020-07-25 Thread MankyGitt
@Herman Willems: Thanks for this trick. I can confirm that this trick
also works for me on my 2015 Dell XPS15.9530

However: If I use the physical keyboard, the touch screen is disabled
until I repeat the trick of closing the lid.

Title:
Touchpad started appearing both as a touchpad and as a mouse input
  devices after upgrade to 20.04

Status in xserver-xorg-input-synaptics package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
It was working perfectly on 18.04 with 5.3 kernel but after upgrade to
20.04 it's becoming disabled because there is a "mouse" attached which
is the same touchpad detected incorrectly, xinput --list showing both

  ⎜ ↳ MSFT0001:00 06CB:7E7E Mouse id=11 [slave pointer (2)]
  ⎜ ↳ MSFT0001:00 06CB:7E7E Touchpadid=12 [slave pointer (2)]

The first line was definitely not present before, I know it because I
use it when in openbox session.

There is also a number of questions on AskUbuntu that look like results of
the same problem at first glance:
  https://askubuntu.com/q/1231873/20275
  https://askubuntu.com/q/1235067/20275
  https://askubuntu.com/q/1234975/20275

and two global search results for the same touchpad model ("MSFT0001:00
06CB:7E7E Mouse") that show the same problem in unrelated contexts:
  https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=953405
  https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=240723

I also have these errors in kernel log, may be related, weren't present
previously:
psmouse serio1: Failed to deactivate mouse on isa0060/serio1: -5
psmouse serio1: Failed to enable mouse on isa0060/serio1

Since it is only a script, this should work in every distribution ;-)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1887190] Re: MSFT Touchpad not working on Lenovo Legion-5 15ARH05

2020-07-25 Thread Helmut Stult
Just repeat again - the fix works where an incorrect driver is detected.
However, no driver is found at all for the LEGION 5 and the touchpad is
therefore not activated.

Thanks Helmut and Ben. These are very precise information and better than any
post elsewhere.
I got no reply from the email contacts provided by Kai-Heng yet...
Anyone with a Lenovo connection ?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1887190] Re: MSFT Touchpad not working on Lenovo Legion-5 15ARH05

2020-07-25 Thread Ben T
Nicolas -- I've seen the R7000 Chinese post
(https://www.cnblogs.com/mikeguan/p/13126497.html), and what it
basically entails is blacklisting hid_multitouch (or disabling it in the
kernel and recompiling), which according to other forums seems to have
an effect on some touchpads, but has no effect on the MSFT0001:00
04F3:3140 touchpad we have. I attempted his suggestions anyways, and
saw the same lack of results -- the touchpad remained dead.

2020-07-25 Thread Ivan Matyunin
I have mutter from proposed, and I don't see any newer version of gnome-
shell in the proposed repository.

I've attached the crash file as well. Also, I'm not really sure if the
crash I reproduced is about this bug or not. I've had other crashes that
were filed separately and have different stack traces but were caused by
using the touchscreen also, such as
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/+bug/1861542

Just in case, here's the actual versions:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1887190] Re: MSFT Touchpad not working on Lenovo Legion-5 15ARH05

2020-07-25 Thread Helmut Stult
I am a Manjaro developer and we have kernels 4.4 / 4.9 / 4.14 / 4.19 / 5.4 /
5.7 / 5.8
The touchpad doesn't work with one of the kernels.
Screen brightness only works with AMD- or nouveau-Driver, not with the
proprietary driver, like 440.100
The brightness display works, but nothing changes.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1887190] Re: MSFT Touchpad not working on Lenovo Legion-5 15ARH05

2020-07-25 Thread Nicolas Rogues
It's a good question.

In my understanding, the Legion R7000 is the name for China of the
Legion-5 15ARH05. In the Lenovo forum, the Lenovo employee has no access
to the equipment and indicates it's a kernel issue, suggesting it used
to work prior to 5.4 kernel. That looks strange.

https://forums.lenovo.com/topic/view/2713/5020793

Also in this thread a member of the Lenovo forum points out to a blog,
unfortunately in Chinese, of a guy who may have found a workaround. I
tried to google translate it but was not sure of the result to try
anything :

https://www.cnblogs.com/mikeguan/p/13126497.html

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1867402] Re: [snap] Icons in file picker are corrupted

2020-07-25 Thread Mateusz Stachowski
I have two themes connected:

content[icon-themes] chromium:icon-themes
gtk-common-themes:icon-themes -
content[icon-themes] chromium:icon-themes
qogir-themes:icon-themesmanual

And only if I choose Yaru or one of the Qogir variants I don't get the
corrupted icons in file picker.

Choosing Adwaita, Dmz-white, Dmz-black, Highcontrast or any other icon
theme results in corrupted icons.

This has happened with kernel 5.4.0-28 and 5.4.0-29; 5.3.0-46 was

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1887190] Re: MSFT Touchpad not working on Lenovo Legion-5 15ARH05

2020-07-25 Thread Helmut Stult
I have found the cause so far that the touchpad MSFT0001: 00 04F3: 3140
is recognized, but no suitable driver is found.

With the touchpad ELAN0001: 00 04F3: 3140 it seems to work with a few tricks.
ELAN is also available in the kernel config, but MSFT is not.

I just don't understand why there are two different names (ELAN and
MFST) under the same hardware ID - what did Lenovo do?

including other Ubuntu systems, but I saw no launchpad bug so I post one.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1849084] Re: Freeze on system-resume caused by kwin and amdgpu driver

2020-07-25 Thread Kenji
Anyone try 5.8.0rc6 yet? I decided to try on a whim since this is a
really new laptop. It got rid of many error messages I was getting. And,
I removed the "EnablePageFlip" entry (so back to default) and sleep does
work normally in 5.8.0r6. Maybe try that and see, or wait until stable
releases. Furthermore, VLC would get stuck in the background after
opening, I would have to kill the process, but now I no longer have to
do that either!

Freeze on system-resume caused by kwin and amdgpu driver

Status in xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
This is a well investigated bug by me.

Problem: a black screen freeze occurs by suspend-resume process
Ubuntu version: Kubuntu 19.10 default plasma, or the backported 5.17
Kernel version: default 5.3.10 or the mainline 5.4.0rc3
xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu: 19.* or the newest from git, the 18.0.1-1 works
well

This freeze can be reproduced only if opengl 2.0 or 3.1 compositor is
enabled in Plasma settings. Xrender is OK however I don't like screen
  tearing.

On Ubuntu 19.10 Gnome desktop (X based) this doesn't occur even if the
Gnome's compositor is enabled. (I don't know what is the default one
there but I haven't disabled it)

I think this is a Kwin / amdgpu driver related bug because of the
differentiation. These can be fixed even in Kwin/opengl compositor not
just in the amdgpu driver or in kernel.

One possible solution: disable opengl compositor by suspend and re-
enable it after login. Use fe.: Xrender before login / before the
  system restored from suspend.

For Ubuntu's maintainers: Couldn't be this problem solved by a
downstream solution? Maybe a proper script could be enough by resume
and by suspend. There are a lot of bugs like this reported in
freedesktop bugreport and the developers haven't got enough time for
  fix them fast enough.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1888942] [NEW] marked url in firefox by using one click isn't copied to clipboard, only with a triple mouse-click

2020-07-25 Thread Matthias Sprau
Public bug reported:

Hi, if I click in an url in firefox, the whole url ist marked, i.e.
highlighted.

If I now use a click on the mousewheel to paste the content of the clipboard
into another software, I discover that the url wasn't copied into the clipboard
- the previous content ist filled in.
That's confusing to me.

I would expect: If I can mark an url in Firefox with a single mouse-click,
which looks like a marking with a triple click, then it should be copied also
in the clipboard.
That would be a consisting behavior.

  ---

I'm using fully updated Ubuntu GNOME 17.04.

In Ubuntu Gnome, you only allow for integer scaling of things for high
DPI monitors. While in theory this sounds good, on a 27 inch 4k
monitor like mine, restricting it to integers is a problem. 1x is
annoyingly small, and 2x is WAY too big. You need a 1.5x, and
presumably to just allow most noninteger values to future proof the
distribution given 8k monitors and all sorts of new and weird things
coming out, like windows 10 has.

Photos of the two annoying sizes are available here (it won't let me
  attach two files):

  http://i.imgur.com/vWrvZxq.jpg
  http://i.imgur.com/11p19k7.jpg

I apologize for my photography skills in advance., you'll have to look
at the ruler for scale to see the problem. Please contact me if you
  need any more information etc.

  Workaround
  ==
You can enable experimental fractional scaling in Ubuntu 17.10 or 18.04 LTS
by running the following command in a terminal and then restarting your
computer. Note that this is an experimental feature and is not fully supported
by either Ubuntu or GNOME.

  gsettings set org.gnome.mutter experimental-features "['scale-monitor-
  framebuffer']"

After restarting your computer, you should find additional scale
options in Settings > Devices > Displays.

If you change your mind and want to get back to supported status, run:

  gsettings reset org.gnome.mutter experimental-features

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1888932] [NEW] Unable to use accent chars using vino-server remote VNC desktop connection

2020-07-25 Thread jfrances
Public bug reported:

Connecting over the VNC session to gnome-remote session is not possible
to use characters such as á, ä, à, â (', ", `, ^).

Tested using 'gedit', 'gnome-terminal', 'libre-office' and
'thunderbird': same results.

Same gnome-session (local-access) works as expected. For this reason
language seems to be configured OK.

Thanks in advance

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1616332] Re: gnome-software using hundreds of MB of memory when not in use

2020-07-25 Thread Meluco
I'm writing about this problem in
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-software/-/issues/191
I think that it's a social and environmental responsibility to try to make
software use a reasonable amount of resources. Unjustified computer renewal is
a social and environmental problem.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1887998] Re: Update to 3.36.4 and SRU it

2020-07-25 Thread Facundo Flores
Hello! After updating mutter to 3.36.4, GNOME-Shell fails to start on
X11 and crashes. I was forced to switch to Wayland.

2020-07-22 13:23:28 upgrade mutter-common:all 3.36.3-0ubuntu0.20.04.1
3.36.4-0ubuntu0.20.04.1
2020-07-22 13:23:29 upgrade gir1.2-mutter-6:amd64 3.36.3-0ubuntu0.20.04.1
3.36.4-0ubuntu0.20.04.1
2020-07-22 13:23:54 upgrade mutter:amd64 3.36.3-0ubuntu0.20.04.1
3.36.4-0ubuntu0.20.04.1

On X11, whenever I turn the monitor off an on again I'm greeted with a blank
screen and the message:
"Oh no! Something has gone wrong.
A problem has occurred and the system can't recover.
Please log out and try again."

I'm able to log-in again but the problem persists. Every time I turn on
the monitor, the same happens.

So I reproduced the problem and found this on syslog:

It looks to me like it is treating the IPv4 to IPv6 converted address as a
hostname and trying to resolve it, what of course fails. This looks like a bug
for me. Adding ":::192.168.1.2" to access list does not resolve the problem.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1888800] Re: Resolution of external monitor goes back to its default resolution when laptop lid is closed

2020-07-25 Thread Amr Ibrahim
Another note (not related to multi-monitor nor Wayland):
GTK3 windows kind of "vibrate" at the edges or produce weird shadows when they
are loading something or when a modal window appears. I notice that in Firefox,
Thunderbird and Eclipse IDE.
Maybe it's related to this:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1874567] Re: [nvidia] Rotating secondary monitor to portrait fails, results in landscape

2020-07-25 Thread Matt Austin
Thank you for fixing this bug. Installing mutter 3.36.4-0ubuntu0.20.04.1
and libmutter 3.36.4-0ubuntu0.20.04.1 from focal-proposed has resolved
this issue for me.

Note: The updated libmutter from focal-proposed also had to be
explicitly installed by me, as it was not automatically pulled in when
updating mutter.

Steps:
1) Enabled focal-proposed
2) apt update
3) apt install mutter libmutter
4) Disabled focal-proposed
5) Removed ~/.config/monitors.xml and ~gdm/config/monitors.xml
6) Rebooted
7) After login, I successfully applied my desired monitor configuration
(changing the primary monitor and setting other monitor to portrait
orientation).

Side notes:
1) I still had to copy ~/.config/monitors.xml to ~gdm/.config/monitors.xml for
the correct primary monitor and orientation to be set on the login screen.
2) After applying the display configuration, the icons in the top-right of the
gnome panel appeared blured (network/bluetooth). This was resolved by applying
150% fractional scaling and then applying 100% scaling again in the gnome
display settings. I haven't had time to reproduce this to know if it's a
one-off or ongoing bug.

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

I have two monitors, with the secondary one rotated in a portrait
orientation. Using the nvidia 440 drivers, the orientation is not
applied when configuring in gnome settings (the displays go blank for
a second, and then reappear in landscape orientation).

Using nvidia settings, I can set the monitor rotation and offset
correctly, however these settings do not persist on next boot (even
when selecting to save to xorg.conf).

When using the nouveau drivers, the orientation is applied correctly
in gnome settings, and is persisted.

  [ Test case ]

  1. Install nvidia drivers
  2. Configure an external monitor to be in portrait mode in
gnome-control-center
  3. Apply the configuration
  4. Expect configuration is properly working

  [ Regression potential ]

Wrong screen size is set and panning is used.
