Also, please don't use Alt+F2. This command needs to be run in the
Terminal app:

  journalctl -b-1 > prevboot.txt

But only using the steps from comment #2. And then use the Files app to
retrieve the file.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1890012] Re: Could not install 'systemd-shim'

2020-08-16 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It appears package 'systemd-shim' stopped existing after Ubuntu 16.04,
so that's part of the problem. Please try purging it with:

 sudo dpkg -P systemd-shim

This bug is either 'Fix Released', 'Invalid' or 'Won't Fix'. Because
it's not a problem in any package we distribute any more.

** Package changed: xorg (Ubuntu) => systemd-shim (Ubuntu)

** Changed in: systemd-shim (Ubuntu)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1890930] Re: Xorg freeze

2020-08-16 Thread Daniel van Vugt
In case the freeze was actually a crash somewhere, please try following
these instructions:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

  Hello,

After upgrading to Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, my multi-seat setup stopped
working. My issue is what's described in
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gdm/-/issues/526, specifically:

  > On seat0, as soon as I click on the GDM login screen, the entry form for
the password completely vanishes and I am left with the standard gray
background, with the only option to restart/stop the computer.
  > On seat1, I can click and enter my password. However the desktop gets
started on seat0 rather than on seat1.

  > Using Wayland or X for GDM has no effect on the general behavior.

One user wrote that he has the same issue on Ubuntu 20.04
  (https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gdm/-/issues/526#note_831892). The
issue was fixed in one bugfix releases of GDM 3.36.x. It will probably
need to be backported to 3.34.x.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1891725] Re: Cannot log in xorg, wayland works fine

2020-08-16 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Also please try this:

1. Reboot fresh.

2. Try to log into Xorg.

3. Log into Wayland and run:

   journalctl -b-1 > journal1.txt
   journalctl -b-2 > journal2.txt

and attach the resulting text files here.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1891725] Re: Cannot log in xorg, wayland works fine

2020-08-16 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I can't see anything going wrong in the logs.

1. Do you have any crash files in /var/crash ?

2. What files do you have in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/ ?

Title:
Backup fails if backup destination is not mounted

Status in Déjà Dup:
  Fix Released
Status in deja-dup package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
I have set my backup destination to a separate drive in the machine,
but not at the default location.

When the backup runs, it fails stating permission denied, as the
  destination drive is not mounted.

When I enter the proper destination in the backup at the "storage
location", the drive then mounts and is present on the desktop. Then
  the backup will run successfully.

I then "unmount" the drive using the menu on the drive icon, and the
mounted drive disappears from the desktop. I don't need a bunch of
drives listed or shown on my desktop, as it detracts from the beauty
  of the screen.

If I mount the drive before running the backup, it will succeed.

My point with this is that I am not going to mount the drive every
time I run backup, and when mounted, I don't need it listed or shown
  on my desktop.

In unity, the drives appeared in the launcher or dock, and there was
an option to "remove from launcher", which still left the drive
mounted, but off the desktop and launcher. This was a nice way to fix
  this problem.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
On the LENOVO AMD Renoir machines, there is a digital mic directly
connected to the APU instead of the codec, so there are two separate
sound cards in the system, one is for analogue codec driven by hda
driver, the other is for the dmic driven by ASoC acp driver.

  The current audio stack (pulseaudio + alsa-ucm-conf + alsa-lib) doesn't
support this design yet, it could support all audio devices on the codec
well, but it doesn't support that dmic well. In the gnome-control-center,
the dmic becomes two input devices: analog input and multichannel input,
and users can only record sound from analog input, the multichannel input
can't function at all. Besides this issue, there is another issue, after
users plug an external mic, the external mic can't replace the dmic
automatically, this gives users a bad experience since this behaviour is
different from the other audio designs.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1891713] Re: I am unable to resize windows by clicking on the tops of them and dragging after gnome-shell restarted due to low performance.

2020-08-16 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It sounds like gnome-shell crashed, which will make everything freeze
and the screen flash for a moment as it restarts. The apps keep running
because Xorg is still running and never crashed. So...

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

When I was saving a document, the computer froze, and so did the
  desktop, and mouse cursor.

Eventually, the mouse cursor reset its position, and the screen
flashed black but then back to normal. However, I was then unable to
move windows around by clicking and dragging them. I had to manually
minimize and then maximize the window back.

This mostly happened to Visual Studio Code, which was running while I
was saving data in another Java application.

I'm currently using patched pulseaudio-modules-bt from here:
  https://github.com/EHfive/pulseaudio-modules-bt. But the problem
  persists with both packages.

The working workaround I found is:

sudo systemctl restart bluetooth.service
bluetoothctl

  # list device MACs

  # use a MAC from the list above
  connect

After doing this, it is possible to switch to A2DP profile in

2020-08-16 Thread Daniel van Vugt
That's a good point but:

1. That's possibly not the problem the user wants to report here; and

2. I see thousands of DENIED messages in many bugs each week. It's not a
new problem.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1886692] Re: [SRU] libreoffice 6.4.5 for focal

Title:
   [SRU] libreoffice 6.4.5 for focal

Status in libreoffice package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in libreoffice source package in Focal:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * LibreOffice 6.4.5 is in its fifth bugfix release of the 6.4 line. Version
6.4.4 is currently in focal.
For a list of fixed bugs compared to 6.4.4 see the list of bugs fixed in
the two release candidates:
   https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Releases/6.4.4/RC1#List_of_fixed_bugs
   https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Releases/6.4.4/RC2#List_of_fixed_bugs
 (that's a total of 96 bugs)

   * Given the nature of the project, the complexity of the codebase and
the high level of quality assurance upstream, it is preferable to SRU
a minor release rather than cherry-pick selected bug fixes.

  [Test Case]

   * No specific test case, bugs fixed upstream hopefully come with
unit/regression tests, and the release itself is extensively exercised
upstream (both in an automated manner and manually) by a community of
testers. Each minor release normally goes through two release
  candidates.

   * The libreoffice packages include autopkgtests, those should be run
  and verified to pass.

   * General smoke testing of all the applications in the office suite
  should be carried out.

  [Regression Potential]

   * A minor release with a total of 96 bug fixes always carries the
potential for introducing regressions, even though it is a bugfix-only
release, meaning that no new features were added, and no existing
  features were removed.

   * A combination of autopkgtests and careful smoke testing as
described above should provide reasonable confidence that no
  regressions sneaked in.

Bug description:
Description: Xorg server uses unacceptably large amounts of memory
  (and keep growing)

Ever since I upgraded to Ubuntu 20.04 (with fresh install) on my
laptop (Lenovo T450s, Intel Core i5-5200U, Intel HD5500 graphics), I
have been troubled by the way Xorg process uses memory.

Here is an example of memory usage of Xorg as a function of time. I
rebooted the laptop on June 17:

  Xorg-usage-20200617a.txt:root1224 1.9 0.8 948408 98848 tty7

  My desktop usage pattern:

  * MATE desktop
  * 4-desktop setting (standard default MATE when shipped)
  * GNUCASH
  * about 3 windows of terminal (each about 5-10 tabs)
  * XPRA running Firefox web browser (to isolate web browser pixmap memory
usage, if that was the culprit)
  * LibreOffice (several windows open at any time)
  * using "redshift" to change the desktop color to red at night

I have never seen this before using Ubuntu 20.04 on this machine.
Before, when I was running Debian 8, I could run this machine for months
literally without Xorg memory bloating rapidly like this (but then I was using
xfce instead of MATE).
I viewed the output of xrestop, the pixmap memory usage is dominated by marco
and wnck-applet:

  xrestop - Display: localhost
  Monitoring 36 clients. XErrors: 0
  Pixmaps: 110748K total, Other: 84K

Title:
copy/paste still sometimes fails in LibreOffice on mutter 3.36.2

Status in Mutter:
  Fix Released
Status in mutter package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
In Ubuntu 19.10 and 20.04 there was a bug that caused copy and paste
operations to fail pretty often: the text that was pasted was not the
text that was just copied. See the long discussion at bug #1852183.
The bug was recently marked closed, since the package mutter -
3.36.2-1ubuntu1~20.04.1 landed in focal-updates and makes the bug
  occur much less frequently.

Unfortunately the bug still exists, and is not difficult to reproduce.
I am running Ubuntu 20.04 and have the new 3.36.2-1ubuntu1~20.04.1
version of mutter. I just opened two LibreOffice Writer windows side
by side, and repeatedly selected some text in the left window, copied
it, then attempted to paste it into the right window. In my
experiment, approximately 1 in every 20 paste operations failed: it
did not paste the text that was just copied, but instead the text that
  was copied before that.

Now, an error rate of 1 in 20 may not seem so bad. On the other hand,
if you spend all day writing a document and copy and paste dozens of
times during the day, then you may hit this bug multiple times per day
(as I have been recently), which is a significant annoyance.

I tested in LibreOffice since that is where I have seen the bug most
often, but I have also seen it occur in other applications as well.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1782629] Re: mutter is ignoring wl_shell_surface_move and wl_shell_surface_resize

2020-08-16 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I just mean the code had changed. Thanks for the update.

Since it's fixed in any Ubuntu version, the main status should be Fix
Released. I don't think we care about gnome-shell in 16.04 (it actually
shipped with Unity?).

Status in mutter package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
mutter (wayland) is ignoring wl_shell_surface_move and
wl_shell_surface_resize request, which prevents the use of subsurfaces
  window decorations (example:
  http://github.com/christianrauch/wayland_window_decoration_example).
The same example works on weston.

The fault is in the method "meta_wayland_pointer_can_grab_surface"
where "pointer->focus_surface == surface" does not hold for
subsurfaces. The attached patch removes the test for the focused
surface and allows resizing and moving of the wl_shell surface in the
  example.

  AND OTHERWISE

I have successfully created launchable desktop app shortcuts. But
they stop working: (1) no launch; (2) no right click context to make
launchable; and (3) no app icon. They can even remain in ~/Desktop
but disappear from the desktop view. A logout kills them. Creating
another new launcher is successful and peculiarly triggers the
temporary reactivation of all the others. But euphoria soon dies as
they all revert to inertia later.

My work around at present is to install PCManFM 1.3.1. Navigating to
~/Desktop on PCManFM, my Nautilus created launchers are all visible,
launchable and have the usual colourful app icon features. But they
  remain inert in Nautilus.

  My Gnome version is: 3.36.1

Bug description:
  Hello

The MSFT touchpad of this Lenovo Legion-5 15ARH05 laptop is not reacting at
all (pointer and click never move when touchpad is touched). This has been
reported by other users in various websites, with various linux systems
including other Ubuntu systems, but I saw no launchpad bug so I post one.
Example of websites covering the issue :
  - https://askubuntu.com/questions/1253830/lenovo-legion-5-touchpad (exactly
the same laptop)
  - https://www.linux.org/threads/lenovo-legion-5-touchpad.29536/ (similar
laptop)

xinput indentifies it as MSFT0001:00 04F3:3140

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1891815] [NEW] Multi-seat stopped working in Ubuntu 20.04

2020-08-16 Thread Michel Le Bihan
Public bug reported:

Hello,

After upgrading to Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, my multi-seat setup stopped
working. My issue is what's described in
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gdm/-/issues/526, specifically:

> On seat0, as soon as I click on the GDM login screen, the entry form for the
> password completely vanishes and I am left with the standard gray background,
> with the only option to restart/stop the computer.
> On seat1, I can click and enter my password. However the desktop gets started
> on seat0 rather than on seat1.

> Using Wayland or X for GDM has no effect on the general behavior.

One user wrote that he has the same issue on Ubuntu 20.04
(https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gdm/-/issues/526#note_831892). The issue
was fixed in one bugfix releases of GDM 3.36.x. It will probably need to
be backported to 3.34.x.

** Affects: gdm3 (Ubuntu)

When using the filter bar, it is desirable to have different filter
options for different folders.

For example, for Inbox, one might normally filter on sender & subject.

But for the Sent folder, filtering on sender makes no sense, better
options would be to be recipient and subject.

Right now, once you define the filter criteria, this seems to move from
folder to folder. You have to re-set the filter options when moving
from folder to folder versus being able to define one for each folder.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Select Inbox
2. Then type in a word in the filter search box.
3. Then define the filter criteria, ie. sender and subject.
4. Then select the Sent folder
5. Type in a work in the filter search box.
6. The filter criteria remains sender and subject. Would like to be able to
define criteria unique to each folder.

Ah, this is about the Quick filter search that is per folder. And about

Haven't seen a dupe so far.

I was about to create a new item for this but see it's already been
flagged in 2010.

I think maintaining a quick filter "per folder" is good, but honestly,
I'd be OK if just the "Sent" folder was special. As the OP said, it
makes no sense to filter on "Sender" in the "Sent" folder. Those were
sent by.. me! However, I would typically want "Sender" in other
folders and occasionally "Recipients". I'd be OK if those were per-
folder, or just used the last search types for all non "Sent" folders
(which might be easier to code).

I typically need to do quicksearch between Inbox, latest saved month and
Sent folders and during a typical day it means toggling between Sender
and Recipients for every search task, multiple times as I change folders
and search criteria until I find what I'm looking for. Worst is to
forget to toggle the buttons and realize I need to go back and redo the
searches.

The most frustrating thing is that this inbox<->sent used to work
automatically in earlier versions (pre-3.0? who keeps count in this new
version system...)!!

Interested folks, please, go vote for this. I'm transitioning from

filtered by "Unread" and let the "All" folder show everything.

The MSFT touchpad of this Lenovo Legion-5 15ARH05 laptop is not reacting at

reported by other users in various websites, with various linux systems
including other Ubuntu systems, but I saw no launchpad bug so I post one.

Bug description:
  Hello

The MSFT touchpad of this Lenovo Legion-5 15ARH05 laptop is not reacting at
all (pointer and click never move when touchpad is touched). This has been
reported by other users in various websites, with various linux systems
including other Ubuntu systems, but I saw no launchpad bug so I post one.
Example of websites covering the issue :
  - https://askubuntu.com/questions/1253830/lenovo-legion-5-touchpad (exactly
the same laptop)
  - https://www.linux.org/threads/lenovo-legion-5-touchpad.29536/ (similar
laptop)

xinput indentifies it as MSFT0001:00 04F3:3140

Thanks a lot for your time. It does not help, but I can confirm what
was reported on askubuntu by another user : the touchpad does work on
  Windows.
