[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1926165] Re: Bass speakers not enabled on Lenovo Yoga 9i

2021-05-15 Thread Hui Wang
I checked the log, looks there is no problem on the speakers.

The bass speaker and main speaker work together, if you play some sound
from the speaker, the sound will be played by bass speaker and main
speaker together.

How do you expect the bass speaker to work?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1927831] Re: Problem with Network Manager GUI on LXQt environment (Lubuntu 20.04 LTS and Lubuntu 21.04)

2021-05-15 Thread Piotr
Chris Guiver, do you will check this issue? You wrote: "Further to prior
comment, I also performed a QA-test using focal daily (20.04.3) on
- sony vaio svp112a1cw (i5-9400u, 4gb, intel haswell-ULT)

and didn't have any issues with regard this bug."

I think that you didn't test it properly. You probably used nm-tray and this is
no issue. I said that I used GNOME Network Manager (GUI nm-applet? This same
like was for Lubuntu 18.04.5). You had installed it on Lubuntu 20.04.2 I only
changed austostart configuration and turn off nm-tray and turn on Network
Manager GUI (GTK3 nm-applet probably).

  Dear Community,

Fedora 34 Spins this works normally and like we knot this disto also

My distro: Lubuntu 20.04.2 LTS (without updates, clear iso downloaded

P.S. I can't report bug with apport because my wi-fi didn't work on

power-button action inconsistent between user session and greeter

Status in ubuntu-settings package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in ubuntu-settings source package in Focal:
  Fix Committed
Status in ubuntu-settings source package in Hirsute:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  [Impact]
When a user is logged in to the Ubuntu desktop, a power button event will
cause the user to be prompted to choose if they'd like to proceed with a
shutdown. However, if the system is sitting at a greeter screen, a power button
event will instead attempt a suspend w/o prompting. This is due to a different
set of defaults for the greeter and the user.
This is a fix for this, aligning all power actions between the greeter
behaviour and the user session one on the user session.

  [Test Plan]
  1. Install new package and reboot
  2. On the greeter screen (gdm), press the physical power button of your
machine.
  3. You should be now prompted about what to do, like shutdown. You can
dismiss it.
  4. Clicking on the physical suspend button should suspend the machine
immediatly.

  [Where problems could occur]
We change the scope of when we applied those settings: we were only applying
them to the GNOME session ran by the user, and it will now be applied as
default to the GNOME session ran by gdm.
Impacts is thus limited to the greeter screen.

Diff is available on this commit:
https://git.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-desktop/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-settings/commit/?h=focal=ca2f9aa9b03862ff044b64d7ef9506ca87e3dd89

  --
  Original report content:

For a logged-in desktop user, they
  see:

  $ gsettings get org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power
  power-button-action 'interactive'

  But the gdm user sees:
  $ sudo machinectl shell gdm@ /bin/bash
Connected to the local host. Press ^] three times within 1s to exit session.
  gdm:~$ gsettings get org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power
power-button-action
  'suspend'

Changing the gdm user's setting to "interactive" using gsettings
causes the greeter to begin prompting, consistent with the logged in
  user experience.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1731581] Re: Context menus do not appear for Gtk text areas upon right-click

2021-05-15 Thread PJSingh5000
The issue has since been fixed and is not present in gtk3, version 3.24.

--
You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop

Title:
Context menus do not appear for Gtk text areas upon right-click

Status in GTK+:
  Expired
Status in gtk+3.0 package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
When right-clicking on Gtk text areas (such as an editable text area
or a text entry field), a context menu does not appear. The pop-up
context menu typically lists options such as copy, paste, etc.

  EXAMPLES

Examples of applications that are impacted include:
  1. Gedit Text Area
  2. Nautlus (editable address bar)
  3. Google Chrome URL bar
  4. GtkHash (text entry fields)

Interestingly the text areas of some other applications do show pop-up
context menu when right-clicked:
  1. Libre Office Writer
  2. Web pages in Google Chrome that require text entry (such as this web page)

  RECREATING ISSUE

I do not have a consistent way to recreate this issue (yet). When I
first log in, the right-click context menus work fine. After some
time of usage, the right-click context menus no longer appear. If I
use the computer long enough (over an hour) without rebooting, this
  issue always appears.

This issue seems to only affect widgets that require text entry.
However, there is one exception I have noticed: the tabs in Google
Chrome stop showing pop-up context menus at the same time as this
issues manifests itself for the rest of gnome-shell applications with
  text areas.

  OTHER CONTEXT MENUS

Context menus for other widgets do appear upon right-click, as
expected, and work fine. For example, the context menu for window
title bars appear when right-clicking on them. The context menu for
folders and files in Nautilus also appear when right-clicking on them.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1926256] Re: Pasted text in the terminal is always highlighted and selected

2021-05-15 Thread PJSingh5000
@Egmont,

You mean it will always be like this going forward?

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
- - - -

Is this the feature you are referring to?...

f. New active mark and face feature: when enabled, it will highlight the text
inserted by a bracketed paste (the `active region') and the text found by
incremental and non-incremental history searches. This is tied to bracketed
paste and can be disabled by turning off bracketed paste.

..or, is it this one?...

h. Bracketed paste mode is enabled by default.

If so, it looks like this "feature" can be disabled. How?

I find there is an inconsistency with this new approach:
If you've just pasted text, then highlight the text, the text looks
unhighlighted.
This is visually confusing.

Perhaps this is an unintended consequence that needs remediation?

Title:
Error launching cheese: Native Windows taller than 65535 pixels are
  not supported

Status in cheese package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Attempting to run cheese on a HDPI display in Wayland results in the
  following errors:

  (cheese:9303): Gdk-CRITICAL **: 10:29:11.221:
  gdk_wayland_window_set_dbus_properties_libgtk_only: assertion
  'GDK_IS_WAYLAND_WINDOW (window)' failed

  (cheese:9303): Gdk-WARNING **: 10:29:11.265: Native Windows taller
than 65535 pixels are not supported

When this error happens, the cheese window does not open.

Sometimes the "Native Windows ... not supported" does not occur, the
cheese window does open. However, the photo area is black. I can work
around this problem by changing the "Photo resolution" in preferences
to a different value, and then changing it back.

Title:
enhance thunderbird to include option to forward original msg in reply

Status in Mozilla Thunderbird:

Status in thunderbird package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: mozilla-thunderbird

In my business environment, TOFU is the norm. (Most people use
Outlook.) Everyone's used to seeing the format that tb presently
provides when I forward messages. So I am always opening the message
twice. First I click forward, then I copy the next, then I close that
window, then I click reply, then I paste the forwarded text, then I
start my reply at the top of the message. I do it this way so the To:
field is filled out for the reply and so the message is tagged as
  replied, not forwarded.

I am requesting that tb be enhanced to provide an additional option
for reply style, which is "reply by forwarding inline."

Not at this time. Note the priority field = P3. The definition of P3
is "Backlog" per https://firefox-source-docs.mozilla.org/bug-
mgmt/guides/priority.html which means there are no plans at this time.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1920190] Re: Printing to ipp printer uses multiple GB of ram. pdftoraster and/or filter chain selection at fault?

2021-05-15 Thread Pratyush Ranjan
I would recommend to clone the repo and then install it. "pdftoraster"
currently runs as a standalone executable but I believe a simple
replacement of pdftoraster located in "usr/lib/cups/filter" with the
upstream file won't do the job.

I am sure that you will end up with the color case and not with
grayscale case so please go on and try it. If you face anything absurd
while installation feel free to ask about it.

Title:
Printing to ipp printer uses multiple GB of ram. pdftoraster and/or
  filter chain selection at fault?

Status in cups-filters package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I have an ipp/AirPrint capable printer (Brother MFC L2710DW) which
automatically got added by Ubuntu (I'm on XUbuntu).
Printing larger documents will easily use multiple gigabytes of ram. If the
document is large enough this makes printing impossible or _very_ slow, as the
process either gets killed or starts swapping.

By watching htop and /proc/$pid/exe I was able to determine that the filter
at fault seems to be /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftoraster.
Indeed, manually calling pdftoraster with similar arguments as passed by cups
(taken from /proc/$pid/cmdline) I can observe the same memory use behaviour.
Memory used seems to be linear in the number of pages and will reach around
7GB for a 48 page test-document.

I am not sure if the resolution should be to fix the memory usage of
pdftoraster or to make cups select a different filter chain. I
describe below how I first tried to debug the issue with the help of
the Debian wiki on cupsfilter and wasn't able to get the same
behaviour because cupsfilter would select a different filter chain
  (involving gstoraster instead of pdftoraster).

For my current situation it would also be nice to know if there's some
way for me to work around the issue until it's fixed by printing via
the filter chain selected by cupsfilter. Should adding the printer
manually via the xfce interface or the cups webinterface work?

Please let me know if you need more information.

  ## Further info:

  $ lsb_release -rd
  Description: Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS
  Release: 20.04

  $ apt-cache policy cups-filters
  cups-filters:
Installed: 1.27.4-1
Candidate: 1.27.4-1
Version table:
   *** 1.27.4-1 500
  500 http://at.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal/main amd64 Packages
  100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

In the system print settings the printer has the device URI
"implicitclass://Brother_MFC_L2710DW_series/".
From watching htop I get the impression that somewhere along the way that
changes to "ipp://Brother%20MFC-L2710DW%20series._ipp._tcp.local/" (that's the
argv[0] of the offending process, the binary for which is
/usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftoraster).

I am attaching test pdfs which exhibit the described memory use when used
with pdftoraster like this:
  /usr/bin/time -v /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftoraster 99 manu sometitle 1
'PageSize=A4 output-format=apple-raster Resolution=600dpi' testdoc/test48.pdf >
pdftorast.out

The memory use and timings I get are in memory_use.txt.
Information about the processes involved and their arguments when printing is
in watching_printing.txt.

  ## Trying to debug with cupsfilter:

I also tried to reproduce the issue by following the steps on the debian wiki
about cupsfilter:
  https://wiki.debian.org/CUPSFilter
Interestingly, I could not get cupsfilter to select the same filter chain.
I am not sure which ppd I should be using, though. I tried with
/etc/cups/ppd/Brother_MFC_L2710DW_series.ppd and with a ppd generated by
  driverless cat 'ipp://Brother%20MFC-L2710DW%20series._ipp._tcp.local/'
  The former only outputs pdf:

  $ /usr/sbin/cupsfilter -p Brother_MFC_L2710DW_series.ppd -m printer/foo -o
number-up=2 testdoc/test96.pdf -e --list-filters
  pdftopdf

  The latter uses gstoraster:

  $ /usr/sbin/cupsfilter -p driverless.ppd -m printer/foo -o number-up=2
testdoc/test96.pdf -e --list-filters
  pdftopdf
  gstoraster
  rastertopwg

Running either without the --list-filters option finishes reasonably
fast and doesn't use excessive ram.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1928536] [NEW] VNC Password cleared on reboot

2021-05-15 Thread jboucquey
Public bug reported:

Password is set using the Screen Sharing settings... Screen sharing
works till next machine reboot. After reboot the password entry is
cleared in the settings and cannot connect anymore.

The following line appears in syslog:

Password not set

Setting the password again in settings solves the problem... but this
isn't very helpful on a machine which is meant to run headless.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1920190] Re: Printing to ipp printer uses multiple GB of ram. pdftoraster and/or filter chain selection at fault?

2021-05-15 Thread Manu
@Pratyush: I'll try in the next days.
What's the recommended way of doing this on Ubuntu? Can I compile using make
and then just copy over the single pdftoraster binary, or should I do a full
make install?

I also commented on your pull request on the OpenPrinting github repo.
There seem to be a few more mallocs that are not followed by free in the
same function, in the grayscale case. I don't know which case we end up
in for my pdf and my printer, but should I wait for you to fix those as
well, before I try?

Considering that most people also have an Android or Apple phone, then
it should be of concern to Mozilla that such a basic function breaks
other clients (regardless of "broken" they might be in Mozilla's
opinion).

You can only afford that level of contempt for you users if you are not
dependant on your product being loved and a success. Wait, who is paying
Mozilla loads *JUST* that they exist so declaring a monopoly is more
difficult hmmm.

How do you break thousands of plug-ins? One of the things the product
was once highly praised for? Ask Mozilla . . .

As I said before, look what they did to Firefox on mobile, and how Thunderbird
has been pushed to the side, to the point that there was even discussion about
giving up on it and moving it to a different project/company outside of Mozilla.
As I said previously, I started using this when Netscape gave it Mozilla having
previously used Netscape. It takes quite a bit to get someone that has been
using the product for over 20 years to "enough is enough". Yes I'm salty, no
wonder.

I'm trying out evolution (Cinnamon/Gnome) and Kmail (KDE) now, and it
looks like I'll be going in the direction of Evolution.
