Bug description:
In Ubuntu 21.10 Impish Indri, I have done today's updates, including
GNOME 40, and when I rebooted, I saw the desktop icons in the
Activities overview that has the grey gears icon and the gibberish
name. However, when I clicked on it, I'm taken to the desktop. When I
open the Activities overview again, that "application" didn't show up.

I suspect that this "application" came from a GNOME extension that
  handles desktop icons, called gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons-ng.
Because I thought that it loaded AFTER the Activities overview opened
at log in. This repeats every time I reboot or just log off and log
  back in.

  Steps to reproduce:
1. Update the Impish system to the latest version
2. Reboot
3. Log in

  Expected results:
The "application" that came from the desktop icon shell extension doesn't
appear in the Activities overview

  Actual results:
This "application" shows up in the overview with the grey gears icon and
the gibberish name every time a user signs in to the new GNOME 40 desktop

Title:
gnome keyboard settings panel enforces single iso-level3-shift key

Status in gnome-control-center package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
My Unicomp has a right windows key and alt key in swapped positions,
so I configured right windows key to act as a second Alt_R (well
  ISO_Level3_Shift), using gnome-tweaks, leading to:

  /org/gnome/desktop/input-sources/xkb-options
['caps:none', 'lv3:rwin_switch']

Opening the keyboard page in gnome settings resets this to

  /org/gnome/desktop/input-sources/xkb-options
['caps:none', 'lv3:ralt_alt', 'lv3:rwin_switch']

Effectively disabling the Alt Gr (right alt key) from acting as level
  3 shift.

Enabling right alt explicitly is not better. That sets

  /org/gnome/desktop/input-sources/xkb-options
['caps:none', 'lv3:ralt_switch', 'lv3:rwin_switch']

and opening the keyboard panel then just deletes the windows key
  switch:

  /org/gnome/desktop/input-sources/xkb-options
['caps:none', 'lv3:ralt_switch']

Not sure if it's a regression, but it's problematic anyway.

Title:
  Translation issues

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  This commit:

  https://salsa.debian.org/gnome-team/gnome-shell/-/commit/86ace441

may have served its purpose for a couple of days. But then this
  happened:

  https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pkgbinarymangler/136

giving dh_translations the ability to create POT files when meson is
  in use.

  So what currently happens is:

  1. The POT is created
  2. The POT is modified with sed()
  3. The POT is created again, overwriting the sed() modifications

And we still have import problems as reported in bug #1756547.

So the override in debian/rules needs to be changed to do things in
  the right order.

Another thing: libgtk-3-bin should be added to Build-Depends to avoid
  warnings when running dh_translations.

Bug description:
LibreOffice 7.2.0 is meant to be targeted for Impish/21.10.
Unfortunately is was not ready in time due to a regression of the ARM
  builds.

  [Impact]

   * LibreOffice 7.2.0 is the initial release of the 7.2 line:
   https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleasePlan/7.2#7.2.0_release

   * Given the nature of the project, the complexity of the codebase and
the high level of quality assurance upstream.

  [Testing]

   * Upstream testing. Bugs fixed upstream typically include
unit/regression tests, and the release itself is extensively exercised
(both in an automated manner and manually).

Trackpad interfering with trackpoint even when disabled

Status in xserver-xorg-input-libinput package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I am running Ubuntu 20.04 on a new ThinkPad P14s AMD. I noticed that
my trackpoint was very laggy and choppy.

After a while I realized that the trackpoint is smooth as long as I am
not touching the trackpad (very difficult). Even with the trackpad
disabled in GNOME and the BIOS (which seems to only affect Windows)
the interference continues. Using the command "libinput debug-events"
I can see "POINTER_MOTION" events being registered despite the
trackpad being off. This seems to be what is causing the trackpoint
  lag.

Disabling the trackpad in the BIOS does not help. I have the same
behaviour on a 21.04 live USB session.

As an example with one output, scaling it with e.g. 'xrandr --output
   --mode 3840x2160 --scale-from 1920x1080', would usually
result in a screen size of 1920x1080, as xrandr sets the screen size
to the bounding box of the configured crtcs.

Ubuntu carries an out-of-tree patch for Mutter:
  x11-Add-support-for-fractional-scaling-using-Randr.patch, attached. It adds a
new function, meta_monitor_manager_xrandr_update_screen_size_derived(), that in
response to RandR configuration changes will attempt to set its own screen
size. When calculating the new screen size, it applies a scaling factor to each
crtc that effectively reverses the requested one. As a result, in the above
example the resulting screen size is 3840x2160, despite the fact that there is
only a 1920x1080 viewport into it.

With the modesetting driver, this isn't a huge issue. The resulting
screen size is larger than you can actually interact with, wasting
memory, but it doesn't cause any visible functional issues.

The NVIDIA driver automatically configures panning when the requested
outputs' viewports are smaller than the screen size. This increases
crtc size, which impacts Mutter's screen size calculation. When Mutter
sets the larger-than-outputs screen size, it triggers the NVIDIA
driver to automatically configure panning. Mutter reacts to the RandR
configuration change by again recalculating the screen size, this time
growing it even larger due to the larger crtcs. In response, the
NVIDIA driver sets up the new, larger panning configuration, causing
the crtcs to be even larger, and causing Mutter to once again
recalculate the screen size. This goes on until all memory is consumed
and gnome-shell is killed by the OOM killer, or the screen reaches
maximum size. In the meantime, the screen is black with only a cursor
  while gnome-shell spins.

  It appears that
  meta_monitor_manager_xrandr_update_screen_size_derived() is intended
for GNOME fractional scaling, adjusting the screen size to
accommodate. In this case we are manually configuring output scaling
with RandR, but this code still runs, causing unintended consequences.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1942655] [NEW] problem after minimizing windows

2021-09-03 Thread Diego Iboy
Public bug reported:

Hello, the problem that I am presented with is basic, but quite annoying.
At any time without any type of pattern, when minimizing a window (of any
program), these remain as "background", and become part of the wallpaper. You
do not interact with it but it remains static on the site.
I attach an example.
The only temporary solution that has worked for me is to log out, but it almost
certainly happens again.
I appreciate the help :)
(The theme has nothing to do with it, it happens to me even though it is stock)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1942653] [NEW] RandR fractional scaling patch interferes with manual RandR output scaling

2021-09-03 Thread Alex Goins
Public bug reported:

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS
Release:20.04

$ apt-cache policy mutter
mutter:
  Installed: 3.36.9-0ubuntu0.20.04.1
  Candidate: 3.36.9-0ubuntu0.20.04.1
  Version table:
 *** 3.36.9-0ubuntu0.20.04.1 500
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal-updates/main amd64
Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 3.36.1-3ubuntu3 500
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal/main amd64 Packages

---

As an example with one output, scaling it with e.g. 'xrandr --output
 --mode 3840x2160 --scale-from 1920x1080', would usually result
in a screen size of 1920x1080, as xrandr sets the screen size to the
bounding box of the configured crtcs.

Ubuntu carries an out-of-tree patch for Mutter:
x11-Add-support-for-fractional-scaling-using-Randr.patch, attached. It adds a
new function, meta_monitor_manager_xrandr_update_screen_size_derived(), that in
response to RandR configuration changes will attempt to set its own screen

This increases crtc
size, which impacts Mutter's screen size calculation. When Mutter sets
the larger-than-outputs screen size, it triggers the NVIDIA driver to
automatically configure panning. Mutter reacts to the RandR
configuration change by again recalculating the screen size, this time
growing it even larger due to the larger crtcs. In response, the NVIDIA
driver sets up the new, larger panning configuration, causing the crtcs
to be even larger, and causing Mutter to once again recalculate the
screen size. This goes on until all memory is consumed and gnome-shell
is killed by the OOM killer, or the screen reaches maximum size. In the
meantime, the screen is black with only a cursor while gnome-shell
spins.

It appears that meta_monitor_manager_xrandr_update_screen_size_derived()
is intended for GNOME fractional scaling, adjusting the screen size to
accommodate. In this case we are manually configuring output scaling
with RandR, but this code still runs, causing unintended consequences.

back the bug url here so we can link them together?

Thanks

Title:
gedit causes loss of extended attributes (xattrs)

Status in gedit package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Ubuntu 21.04 hirsute
  gedit 3.38.1-1

If a file with extended attributes (xattrs) is edited and saved with
gedit, the xattrs are lost. This problem - as well as the loss of
  birth time, reported in
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gedit/+bug/1940758 - seems
to be caused by gedit creating a new file when saving. Compare this
with nano, which does not destroy xattrs.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1 echo testing > testfile.txt
  2 setfattr -n user.test -v "this is my test xattr" testfile.txt
  3 getfattr -d testfile.txt
  # file: testfile.txt
  user.test="this is my test xattr"
  4 gedit testfile.txt
  make edit and save
  5 getfattr -d testfile.txt
  no output

This bug also causes a loss of ACLs for the edited file, as they are
stored as extended attributes. Because of this I am marking this bug
  as a security vulnerability.

This bug is not limited to gedit; it applies to a number of other text
  editors.

Bug description:
Since 20.04 has been released, the option "Show Hidden Files" has
never lasted long. It never persists over a reboot and even during the
same session, it will just hide the files after some random (it seems
  random) interval.

This happens for me on 3 different computers, all different builds.
This happens on a vanilla install too. I have never been able to make
"Show Hidden Files" last longer than an hourish, and never over a
  reboot.

I work a lot in hidden files, this is mostly just frustrating to me
since it happens randomly and when I am moving around a project, I
have to keep toggling "Show Hidden Files" to get work done.

I did have to reinstall `gnome-control-center` after a fresh install
and updating Ubuntu 20.04 the latest version, I am not sure if that
could help identify the issue but I have always had this issue on
  20.04 so I am doubtful.

  I did this running:
  ```
  sudo apt install --reinstall gnome-control-center
  ```

I had to reinstall this since Settings was no longer available after
the system was updated (fresh install with `sudo apt update && sudo
apt upgrade` is what broken it for me to have to reinstall it.

  I even tried using:

  ```
  gsettings set org.gtk.Settings.FileChooser show-hidden true
  ```
  but the issue still happens.

Also, not sure why nautilus is installed, I thought 20.04 was gnome?
Again, this is a fresh install (15 days old)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1756547] Re: LP refuses to import plural strings where e.g. msgstr[0] entries in PO file miss %d

2021-09-03 Thread Colin Watson
Launchpad intentionally imports even obsolete messages, although they're
tagged internally as obsolete and filtered out for various purposes. I
think this is so that they can be used as suggestions in some cases (for
example, a similar message might still be used in another context). For
that sort of purpose it can still be useful to know that the messages
don't parse correctly, because they couldn't be used directly as
suggestions without fixing the mistakes.

This is likely part of some work that was never completed, e.g.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/launchpad/+bug/281165 and
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/launchpad/+spec/rosetta-fuzzy-merge.

(Note that I'm reverse-engineering this from the code and from my
general understanding of translations, rather than with direct
information from the people who wrote the code.)

I can see that it might be useful to at least exclude errors about
obsolete messages like this from translation import failure emails. If
you agree, could you file a separate bug about that?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1942432] Re: third-party applications freeze gnome-shell reproducibly

2021-09-03 Thread Nicolas Herzog
Thank you for the quick response.
I'm sorry for the work I generated. After reporting the bug, I tried another
display / window manager, respectively, and managed my system into a
non-working GUI.
I then did a backup and reinstalled Linux, now cinnamon is working well.
So you can close the bug in my view.

Title:
  third-party applications freeze gnome-shell reproducibly

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
On my Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS, I have reproducible freezes of gdm3
(3.36.3-0ubuntu0.20.04.4) caused by third-party applications. The only thing I
found describing my problem was https://unix.stackexchange.com/a/39855 (passage
*GUI Glitches Causing Unresponsive WM or X11/Wayland*). This is exactly my
experience ("**an application stops responding and prevents you from entering
input with the keyboard or mouse to other application windows**"). Specifically:
  - clicking on a hyperlink in (an open mail in) thunderbird freezes gdm3 at
90%.
  - opening files via nemo (file manager) freezes gdm3 sometimes, regardless
which file type.
  - libreoffice freezes gdm3 a lot when switching windows via alt-tab, but not
when I switch windows via super key.

Whenever a freeze occurs, the clock in my taskbar stops, the mouse and
keyboard still work, but no window responds. Switching to tty works.
Killing the last used application (e.g. thunderbird, nemo,
soffice.bin) via tty brings gdm3 to life again. The funny thing is
that when e.g. I open a link via thunderbird and gdm3 freezes, then I
kill thunderbird via tty and switch back to X, then thunderbird is
gone but firefox has opened the link.

I activated gdm3 debug output but could not find anything (I'm not an
ubuntu/X/gdm expert).
One freeze occurs somewhere between two **systemd-logind: got pause for
13:73** in syslog_gdm3.log

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1942599] [NEW] KDE Volume not matching alsa volume in ALC294 (Asus Zenbook UM431D)

2021-09-03 Thread LukasThyWalls
Public bug reported:

Hello.

I posted some weeks ago in pulseaudio bugtracker
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pulseaudio/pulseaudio/-/issues/1249 about
an issue, but i was thinking it should be better have here the issue too
because maybe is related with other components in (K)Ubuntu system.

I will go to a copy paste, because it self explanatory:

---

* Context:

OS: KUbuntu 21.04 with kernel 5.14.0rc4 mainline.
Laptop: Asus Zenbook UMD431D with ALC294
pa-info: pa-info.txt (attached)

Also recently was fixed an issue with alsa about the 4 speakers volume
(two of them weren't affected by it
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=212547) however, this
doesn't seems related to that. (That's why i use 5.14.0rc4, because 5.14
are the first with the patch).

* Issue behaviour and description

The main issue can be seen in the next video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBrHi1f9bck

Summarizing, when you go up and down the KDE volume, if you compared the
desired volume in the slider with alsamixer doesn't match. But the issue
is when you reach below 9%, with that the Master volume in alsamixer is
0%, so there isn't any sound, and between 1%~8% it's changing the
"Speaker" slider, doing nothing. It's like the "Speaker" slider is
stacked below the "Master", but that doesn't make any sense in practice.

Changing the volume in the KDE volume slider is not "linear", between
50%~100% it's more or less and the volume "feels" right, but below that,
the volume goes down way faster. For example, having the volume at 25%,
the sound is almost noticiable unless you put you ears near the
speakers, something like this should be at 10%, but at the real 10% you
have a barely noticiable sound in the speakers when you have your ears
directly in them.

* Expected Results

The general volume slider should match the Master Volume in alsa, and
only change that slider.

Thanks!

---

Offtopic: Also i found doing testing for the kernel bug noted above,
that changing to some alsa model in this laptop, then appears in the
volume/audio configurator a selection of output and input what can
overrides the headphone plug status, and i see it very useful,
especially because if i plug a headphone without microphone i can't use
the laptop built-in microphone and the only thing i can do is not use
headphone. But using some models (dell-headset-multi, for example) i can
do that, however, it brings the issue with the volume in the back
speakers. How pulseaudio can be do this? it can be done for my laptop?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1942592] Re: Settings crashes on Displays setting

2021-09-03 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

Status in screen-resolution-extra source package in Groovy:

Status in screen-resolution-extra source package in Hirsute:

Bug description:
In Bionic, screen-resolution-extra has a dependency on
  policykit-1-gnome | polkit-1-auth-agent. Focal replaces this with a
  dependency on gnome-shell | policykit-1-gnome | polkit-1-auth-agent.
  As a result, when install screen-resolution-extra (e.g. as a
dependency of nvidia-settings) on a system that doesn't already have
GNOME or another polkit auth agent installed, the default dependency
resolution pulls in a full GNOME desktop in Focal, while it does not
do so under the same circumstances in Bionic. This can be worked
around by explicitly installing policykit-1-gnome (or another package
which provides the polkit-1-auth-agent virtual package), but it would
be nice to not pull in GNOME by default on a system that doesn't
  already have it.

  [Impact]

  * Installing the nvidia-settings package causes gnome-shell to be
installed. This is less than ideal on servers.

  [Fix]

  * Moving policykit-1-gnome ahead as the first of the polkit
  dependencies will solve the problem.

  [Test Case]

  * Install screen-resolution-extra from proposed on a system where no
polkit-1-auth-agent provider is installed, and check that gnome-shell
is not installed as a dependency.

  [Regression Risk]
Low, as the change will still allow the dependency to be satisfied.

NOTE: this or like issue is experienced with Ubuntu (GNOME) & Kubuntu

  though.

  Daniel (vanvugt) has suggested this box should only be used for 20.04;

Install worked flawlessly except the adjust.screens.to.match.my.setup which I
consider part of system shakedown..

  ** Expected results

I expect on adjust screens, I can read both screens

  ** Actual results

My top.display remained readable; lower display had become a somewhat

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1942561] [NEW] ubuntu-mate impish install; graphics on one display warped on display.position adjustment

2021-09-03 Thread Chris Guiver
Public bug reported:

** quick notes

I'll add more soon; link other report(s; 1 kubuntu, 1 ubuntu) & maybe
mark duplicate

NOTE: this or like issue is experienced with Ubuntu (GNOME) & Kubuntu
(KDE) so it's not surprising. It does not occur on Xubuntu & Lubuntu
though.

Daniel (vanvugt) has suggested this box should only be used for 20.04;
bugs in nouveau are difficult for Ubuntu to track down.. but this box is
what I have for QA-installs.

Install worked flawlessly except the adjust.screens.to.match.my.setup
which I consider part of system shakedown..

Of NOTE: I can click the 'hide all windows & show desktop' and screen
muck up was gone in an instant; hit it again & windows were returned &
usable.
