Title:
  Gnome Shell freeze

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
Given that I am using Google Chrome (updated to 25/08/2021) and I try to take
a selected screenshot, using the command Ctrl + Shift + PrintScreen.
While the website visited is displaying dropdown options (after clicking an
html selector which displays options).
Then the mouse can't click on any icon except the current opened windows
"minimize" button.
So a manual restart had to be done.

Using firefox I couldn't do the screenshot because the dropdown
dissapears while taking it. But nothing else occurs.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1948619] [NEW] Failed to start zsys daemon service

2021-10-24 Thread Robert A. Schaefer Jr.
Public bug reported:

Frequently when running apt upgrade as well as other times the system
seems to hang. Afterwards with either a message is printed to the
screen or an entry is made in the log statusing that zsysd.service timed
out and Failed to start ZSYS daemon service.

This started I think back in September on 21.04. It has continued now
that I've upgraded to 21.10.

Bug description:
  From duplicate bug 1720364 report.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Install ubuntu-mate-desktop on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS with HWE (Xorg 1.19.5), or
17.10 or 18.04 LTS.
  2. Set-up two keyboard layouts - English and Russian
  3. Set as keyboard layout switcher in mate-control-center
  4. Try to use shortcuts starting from :
4.1. Open Firefox, open new tab, go to some site in it, close tab, try to
click to restore closed tab.
4.2. Open mate-terminal, try to open new tab with , or copy
(), or paste ().
4.3. Open pluma, write some text, try to navigate in it with
.

  Expected results:
switches keyboard layout, shortcuts starting from
 work normally.

  Actual results:
switches keyboard layout, shortcuts starting from
 do not work.

  Notes:
  1. Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xorg 1.18.4) with Marco and Compton work normally with
 keyboard layout switcher.
  2. This problem was discovered before on 13.10, 14.04 and other modern
versions with GNOME desktop (Metacity and Compiz) - see bug 1245473.

  ---
  Original description below:

This is a reopen of bug #36812, which has reappeared in Kubuntu 17.04
  Zesty Zapus.

This is a bug about shortcuts mapped to combinations which include
  each other.

For example, if we have Ctrl+Shift (for keyboard layout) and Ctrl+Shift+N (to
open a new terminal), then we are practically unable to use the second
shortcut; this is what happens:
  Ctrl press (nothing happens)
  Shift press (keyboard layout change)
N (a simple N appears, since a shortcut has already fired)

The expected behavior is to fire shortcuts on the release (not on
press) of the special keys (ctrl, shift, alt, etc) which is also how
Windows behave. This is a serious problem for bilingual layouts,
typically using Alt+Shift or Ctrl+Shift for keyboard layout change.

Apparently, the bug has reappeared after the patch that used to fix
the problem (208_switch_on_release.diff) has been removed from X.Org
1.19 packages. There is an updated patch in the upstream ticket
  https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=865 (link to the
  attachment: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=129861).

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * One of the upstream changes changed behavior of clipboard copying
files/directories from nautilus to applications accepting text only (e.g.
gnome-terminal). In such case the pasted input is prefixed with:
  x-special/nautilus-clipboard
  copy file://

This was not the case in earlier releases and this change has been
  reverted in later upstream releases.

Reverting the problematic commit will fix the usecase reported in this
bug (and all applications where copying from Nautilus and pasting the
data into a text-based input makes sense), but will break copying
  to/from Desktop Icons extension.

I recommend reporting the Desktop Icons extension issue (present
already in every later Ubuntu release) in a separate bug and track the
  fix there.

  [Test Plan]

   1. Open nautilus.
   2. Right-click on any file or directory and select 'Copy' from the context
menu.
   3. Open gnome-terminal and right-click paste the contents of the clipboard.

Expected result: path of the file/directory is pasted in the terminal.
Actual result: pasted input is prefixed with "x-special/nautilus-clipboard
  copy file://"

  [Where problems could occur]

   * There are some workarounds listed in the upstream bug so fixing the root
cause may break environments with those workarounds in place.
   * Reverting this change also limits functionality of the desktop icons
extension shipped with Ubuntu. Namely: before the new clipboard API is used in
desktop-icons (merge requests [1] and [2]) copying and pasting to/from the
desktop extension to a nautilus will not be possible via keyboard shortcuts or
context menu (dragging and dropping will remain to work).

  Original bug description:

Until Ubuntu 18.10 Nautilus does copy all selected filenames in simple

very useful function if you have, for example, to upload a file to
webmail or other web-service. You cold copy the file within nautilus

  [Other Info]

  Original bug description:

Until Ubuntu 18.10 Nautilus does copy all selected filenames in simple
Text format and this way you cold paste the selected files as a list
to other programs: for example into the texteditor gedit. This was a
very useful function if you have, for example, to upload a file to
webmail or other web-service. You cold copy the file within nautilus
and paste it directliy to the selection dialog or webfield to upload
  the file.

Or if you wanted a simple List of all your files in a folder you where
able to select all files with nautilus, copy and paste into gedit.
This is not possible anymore. The output of natilus looks now like
  this:

  x-special/nautilus-clipboard
  copy
  file:///home//Schreibtisch/new%20document.txt

Until Ubuntu 18.10 this looks like this:

  /home//Schreibtisch/new document.txt

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Select files with nautilus
  2. Press Ctrl+C
  3. open gedit
  4. press Ctrl+V

Title:
Copying and pasting to/from Nautilus does not work

Status in gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete
Status in gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons source package in Hirsute:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * After upstream Nautilus has reverted the following commit [1]
related to upstream bug [2] the desktop icons extension lost it's
  ability to copy to/from nautilus.

   * This is related to the fact that before there was some metadata
passed along in the clipboard along with text data. This was causing
issues with compatibility with some applications that were not
expecting any metadata (MIME type in this case) was glued to the text
clipboard contents. Hence, it was reverted upstream [3].

   * Fixing the root cause of this issue required changes to Nautilus
  [3], gnome-shell [4] and desktop-icons [5] [6]. Nautilus and gnome-
shell parts are already implemented and present in Hirsute and Impish.

  [Test Plan]

   1) Make sure desktop-icons extension is enabled.
   2) Open nautilus window and copy any file from there by right-clicking and
selecting "Copy" from the popup menu.
   3) Right-click on desktop and select "Paste" from the context menu.

Expected result: selected file is copied to the desktop.
Actual result: "Paste" item is disabled in the menu.

  [Where problems could occur]

   * Mixing a version of nautilus without commit [3] and fixed version
of desktop-icons may still lead to a scenario when copying will not
  work.

   * Any extension/application copying to desktop using the smuggled-in-
text clipboard behavior should be expected to stop working.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1948599] [NEW] Nautilus icon missing from taskbar (21.10; Xorg)

2021-10-24 Thread Springnuts
Public bug reported:

Upgraded to 21.10. I am using Ubuntu Tweaks to set a bottom of screen taskbar.
Nautilus (Files) was pinned to the taskbar. I discovered that Waland was
incompatible with my graphics card, so switched to Xorg. I think at this point
the Files icon disappeared (and just possibly some others I have not noticed).
I can launch Nautilus from the launcher, but the icon does not appear.
Nautilus version 1:40.2-1ubuntu1

Expected behaviour 1: The pinned icon would remain visible on the taskbar.
Observed behaviour 1: The pinned icon disappeared from the taskbar.

Expected behaviour 2: When Nautilus is open the icon will be visible on the
taskbar.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1946525] Re: Removable media are not mounted automatically

2021-10-24 Thread Björn Hutmacher
No, the only indication of me inserting a removable storage is in dmesg
where the device is acknowledged. I have to either mount the device
manually from shell or go through the Gnome Disks utility. Today I
discovered that connecting my phone, which uses MTP for file transfers,
doesn't mount automatically anymore either. Could be related.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1946525] Re: Removable media are not mounted automatically

2021-10-24 Thread Akbarkhon Variskhanov
@bjorn-hutmacher, thank you for the thorough description!

Do removable media show up in the Files at least? In my case, I could
see them being recognized and I could click on them, which would then
mount them successfully.

On Wayland toolbar menus are sometimes invisible/flickering

Status in Mozilla Firefox:

Bug description:
  User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:91.0)
  Gecko/20100101 Firefox/91.0

  Steps to reproduce:

Open Downloads panel, Library or Application menu form the Toolbar by
  clicking on the corresponding icons.

  Actual results:

From version 90 I noticed that Library or other items in the Toolbar
won't open when I click it. Instead it flickers a few times on mouse
movement - it looks like it opens but it's not visible, it becomes
visible a fraction of a second when I move the mouse otherwise it's
  completely transparent.

Which Toolbar icon this affects seems random. I tried to fix it by
resetting the Toolbar and disabling extensions which have icons in the
Toolbar. Then I noticed that Library was working normal again but
Downloads or Application Menu wouldn't open.

When this happened with the Application Menu I could barely see the
contents of the menu by moving the mouse which made the menu flicker.
The cursor was able to select menu items in the menu but it was
  completely transparent.

In the enclosed screenshot you can see I selected the Library menu
  item but it isn't opened.

  Expected results:

The menus in the Toolbar should open like they used to.

2021-10-24 Thread Bug Watch Updater

Title:
On Wayland toolbar menus are sometimes invisible/flickering

Status in Mozilla Firefox:
  Invalid
Status in firefox package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1940417]

2021-10-24 Thread Jani Uusitalo
I tested 95.0a1 (Nightly), and opening the hamburger menu (using the
steps I outlined above) works now.

Closing it is still partly broken though, as clicking on the menu button
doesn't close the menu; I think that is [bug
1694514](https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1694514).

For a workaround, clicking outside the menu (and the menu button) does
close the menu.

Title:

Status in remmina package in Ubuntu:

  3. Try to connect to RDP

  Expected results:
  * remmina on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS is able to connect to RDP server.

  Actual results:
  * remmina on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS is unable to connect to RDP server.
It reports the following errors in terminal:
  $ remmina
  NX: detected keyboard type pc105/us
  Remmina plugin NX (type=Protocol) registered.
  Failed to load plugin:
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/remmina/plugins/remmina-plugin-rdp.so.

  work well with shortcuts (reopen)

Status in X.Org X server:

Status in xorg-server package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  From duplicate bug 1720364 report.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Install ubuntu-mate-desktop on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS with HWE (Xorg 1.19.5), or
17.10 or 18.04 LTS.
  2. Set-up two keyboard layouts - English and Russian
  3. Set as keyboard layout switcher in mate-control-center
  4. Try to use shortcuts starting from :
4.1. Open Firefox, open new tab, go to some site in it, close tab, try to
click to restore closed tab.
4.2. Open mate-terminal, try to open new tab with , or copy
(), or paste ().
4.3. Open pluma, write some text, try to navigate in it with
.

  Expected results:
switches keyboard layout, shortcuts starting from
 work normally.

  Actual results:
switches keyboard layout, shortcuts starting from
 do not work.

  Notes:
  1. Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xorg 1.18.4) with Marco and Compton work normally with
 keyboard layout switcher.
  2. This problem was discovered before on 13.10, 14.04 and other modern
versions with GNOME desktop (Metacity and Compiz) - see bug 1245473.

  ---
  Original description below:

This is a reopen of bug #36812, which has reappeared in Kubuntu 17.04
  Zesty Zapus.

This is a bug about shortcuts mapped to combinations which include
  each other.

For example, if we have Ctrl+Shift (for keyboard layout) and Ctrl+Shift+N (to
open a new terminal), then we are practically unable to use the second
shortcut; this is what happens:
  Ctrl press (nothing happens)
  Shift press (keyboard layout change)
N (a simple N appears, since a shortcut has already fired)

The expected behavior is to fire shortcuts on the release (not on
press) of the special keys (ctrl, shift, alt, etc) which is also how
Windows behave. This is a serious problem for bilingual layouts,
typically using Alt+Shift or Ctrl+Shift for keyboard layout change.

Apparently, the bug has reappeared after the patch that used to fix
the problem (208_switch_on_release.diff) has been removed from X.Org
1.19 packages. There is an updated patch in the upstream ticket
  https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=865 (link to the
  attachment: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=129861).

Bug description:
  Hi,

my little daughter discovered a logon screen bypass in Ubuntu Mate
21.10 after hitting the keyboard for a while.

It turns out that several keyboard shortcuts are allowed while Ubuntu
  Mate is locked (arctica-greeter):

  - Mod4 + S (mate-search-tool)
  - Mod4 + E (Open Caja / File Explorer)
  - CTRL + Shift + Esc (mate-system-monitor)
  - PRNT (Screenshot)

All of the mentioned shortcuts could be used to spawn a file explorer
(Caja) or various other binaries as user "lightdm", who owns the logon
  screen.

Although an interactive terminal like mate-terminal, xterm, lxterm
etc. could not be opened directly, there are various options to run
commands as the lightdm user, for example by creating a shell script
using "caja", and execute it directly using the GUI.

I've attached Proof-of-Concept GIFs for all shortcuts mentioned above.
There might be additional shortcuts that could be used to achieve the
same, however I'm not aware about every shortcut that is configured,
but I suppose that the root cause is located somewhere in arctica-
greeter, rather than within every single binary launched by shortcuts.

The bug was reproduced on a fresh installation of Ubuntu Mate 21.10. I
haven't tested other versions of Ubuntu Mate yet.

Please find additional version details below:
