If you also see an 'Automatic Screen Brightness' option in the same
settings panel then please disable that.

Title:
  The screen goes dim

Status in gnome-control-center package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
The screen goes dim after 30 seconds of inactivity even after I've unchecked
a switch in the Settings > Power > Power saving options > Dim screen.
Basically, the system doesn't care about this switch and it's really annoying
while I'm trying to read the article or something.
Fix it please, I would really appreciate this.

Title:
dist-upgrade package yaru-theme-gnome-shell could not installed

Status in yaru-theme package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Sorry for my bad english, I am a german ;-)

  Yesterday I do a dist-upgrade from 20.04. LTS to 22.04 LTS.
I do it with the gui "update management" or "Aktualisierungsverwaltung" in
german
During the process the following problems ocur:

  1. During "package installation" a MessageBox pops up, with the following msg:
new yaru-theme-gnome-shell package pre-installation script subprocess
returned error exit status 1

  2. During step "installing firefox snap" there is a second window over the
normal one (snap install) that "hangs"
After a while (~2min) I am able to abort this one (geting process hangs are
You like to kill it)

  Problem 1, More details:
After the upgrade, the system boots right into the logon screen, but I am
unable to log in.
When I click mei User and enter my passwd, the screen flickers and I get a
message:
Oh, no, something went wrong logout and try again
I do this 3-5 times but always with the same result.

  Now i switch to a console (Ctrl-Alt-F2)
Try to install the package manually
  sudo apt install yaru-theme-gnome-shell
reports a "not owned" file in /usr/share/themes/Yaru-dark/gnome-shell
I lock into this folder and found a file "gnome-shell.css.save".
After I removed this installation worked and I am able to log into the GUI.
That seems to fix problem 1, but not fully.
When I try to login imediatly after the system has booted I got the same
error as mentioned above.
Only when I wait a bit (~20sec) login is possible.
I belive that is some kind of timing problem

  Problem 2, More details:
when I start firefox I got a "garbed" window, so it seams that firefox wasn't
correctly installed. I will try to reinstall it later and report the result
(That's not so importent for me, because I don't use firefox often, I use
chrom).

Bug description:
I have several input sources configured on my computer. Accidentally
found that I can't switch them by keyboard indicator in the right

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2007746] Re: [SRU] xserver crashes when hyperv_drm kernel module is loaded on azure NV series instances w/ nvidia grid driver

Title:
[SRU] xserver crashes when hyperv_drm kernel module is loaded on azure
NV series instances w/ nvidia grid driver

Status in xorg-server package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in xorg-server source package in Focal:
  In Progress

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

   * Microsoft Azure NV-series instances with NVidia GRID drivers
started to experience xserver crashes while following Microsoft's
official guide to installing Nvidia drivers [1].

   * Root cause analysis showed that it was due to having a device with
BusID "PCI:0@:0:0", where domain id is >= 32767 while the
  hyperv_drm kernel module is loaded.

   * Removing either the BusID specification or unloading the hyperv_drm
kernel module seems to fix the crash.

   * The crash is happening while X.server is trying to enumerate PCI
devices. X.server dereferences a NULL pointer while trying to access
  to the PCI device info.

   * The reason why it only happens while the hyperv_drm kernel module
is loaded is that the hyperv_drm module does not expose PCI hardware
information since it's a virtual device.

   * The upstream patch [2] addresses the issue and it's confirmed that
the xserver with the patch does not experience the crash.

   * Ubuntu Focal `xorg-server` package does not include the patch [2]
  at the moment (xserver-xorg-core=2:1.20.13-1ubuntu1~20.04.6).

  [ Test Plan ]

Part (a) is quoted from Microsoft's official guide [1].

  Part (a):

   * Spawn a Microsoft Azure NV-series instance with an NVidia GRID-supported
GPU
     - e.g. `NV36adms A10`
   * Install updates, required tooling, and the desktop environment:
     - sudo apt-get update
     - sudo apt-get upgrade -y
     - sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -y
     - sudo apt-get install build-essential ubuntu-desktop -y
     - sudo apt-get install linux-azure -y
   * Disable nouveau kernel driver:
     # Create a blacklist file /etc/modprobe.d/nouveau.conf with following
contents:
     blacklist nouveau
     blacklist lbm-nouveau
   * Reboot the VM, re-connect, and then stop X server:
     - sudo reboot
     # wait for the reboot, reconnect, and continue:
     - sudo systemctl stop lightdm.service
   * Download and install the NVidia GRID driver:
     - wget -O NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-grid.run
https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=874272
     - chmod +x NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-grid.run
     - sudo ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-grid.run
     - # When the setup asks whether you want to run the nvidia-xconfig utility
to update your X configuration file, select Yes.
   * Copy /etc/nvidia/gridd.conf.template to /etc/nvidia/gridd.conf
     - sudo cp /etc/nvidia/gridd.conf.template /etc/nvidia/gridd.conf
   * Edit /etc/nvidia/grid.conf
     - sudo nano /etc/nvidia/grid.conf
     # Append the following lines:
     IgnoreSP=FALSE
     EnableUI=FALSE
     # Remove this line if present:
     FeatureType=0
     # And save.
   * Reboot the VM

   Part (b):

    * Ensure that the hyperv_drm kernel module is loaded:
  - sudo modprobe hyperv_drm
    * Use the attached xorg.conf file to override /etc/X11/xorg.conf file
    * try to start the `xserver`:
  - sudo startx
    * `xserver` should crash with a similar output to the following:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2007683] Re: ubuntu crash randomly after awake from sleep

2023-02-19 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

Title:
In the nautilus compressor dialogue descriptions are cut off on X11
  22.04 LTS

Status in Nautilus:
  Unknown
Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Hello,

I found a bug in the nautilus file archiver/compressor feature. If you
right click on a file/folder, then go to "Compress" then you will see
the corrupted descriptions when you select the package format (.zip
etc.) I made a screenshot of it. At least in German and maybe in other
languages where you have a long description text.

According to my tests it happens
  - only on X11, not on Wayland
  - on every scaling factor (100% original, 150% fractional, 200%)

I read the changelogs of nautilus and it seems that this bug was fixed in
nautilus 42.5:
"* Really fix the cropped compress format popover on X11 (Ondrej Holy)"
  Source: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/-/blob/gnome-42/NEWS
(nautilus on Ubuntu Jammy uses only version 42.2)

So it would be nice if this patch could be transferred to Ubuntu 22.04
LTS, because I currently can't read the descriptions.

  With best reagards
  Malsabku

with the shipped totem video player. Unfortunately, on the current
Jammy image, totem simply reports "The specified movie could not be
found" when attempting to play the file (the exit code is 0, no other
errors are reported at the command line).

I've attempted to install a few gstreamer codecs, in case that
might've been the issue (this was necessary on some older versions),
but neither gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly, nor gstreamer1.0-libav made any
difference. Just to ensure the video file was intact and playable, I
then installed vlc from the archive, which played the video happily.

Title:
[Inspiron 7590, Realtek ALC3254, Speaker, Internal] fails after a
  while

Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  [Summary]
During the kernel SRU testing on focal-hwe, I found the audio output of some
machines are broken.
I've tested some of machine on Jammy using same kernel(5.15.0-66-generic) and
haven't seen this happened.

The volume bars in settings react to what sound is played correctly
and device is detected as well.

  [Reproduce steps]
  1. install focal
  2. enable -proposed
  3. run apt dist-upgrade.
  4. reboot.
  5. press fn keys to volume up then volume down or play a short youtube video.
  6. after a while can't hear any sound from the speaker.

  [Failure rate]
  10/10

  [Additional info]
If I run "sudo alsa force-reload" can make audio work again, but after a
while it breaks again.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1739635] Re: Can we please get Mouse Acceleration as a GUI control?

2023-02-19 Thread BloodyIron
Yes, I requested "Mouse Acceleration" not any other name for it, or
behaviour. And this bug/feature request should implement it as "Mouse
Acceleration" as that is the term used when humans talk about it, namely
in the gaming community/industries.

I have posted in that thread you've linked to, thanks for pointing me to
this.

It would be a mistake to call this feature anything but "Mouse
Acceleration" as that is what a human is expecting to see when looking
for that setting, and using any other term or verbiage would tangibly
make it harder to actually know which setting disables "Mouse
Acceleration".

The fact there are guides showing how to disable "Mouse Acceleration" in
other operating systems reliably demonstrates that the terms used by
Windows/macOS, etc, are not sensible or self-indicative terms. If the
term used were "Mouse Acceleration", a guide realistically would likely
not be needed at all.

Adding a function should always take usability into consideration, and
there is a very tangible usability difference between "Mouse
Acceleration" as a term for the function, or _any other term used_.

The devs will do as they may, but again, it would be a tangible mistake
to not use "Mouse Acceleration" as the name.

Title:
Xrandr twitches when using DVI-VGA adapter via triple AMD card setup

Status in xserver-xorg-video-ati package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
What I expected to happen is a normal picture on all four of my
  monitors.

What happened instead xrandr will twitch when using a DVI-VGA adapter via
ubuntu 12.04-14.04:
  lspci | grep VGA
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RS880
[Radeon HD 4250]
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RV610
[Radeon HD 2400 PRO]
06:06.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI
RV250/M9 GL [Mobility FireGL 9000/Radeon 9000] (rev 02)

fglrx-* in Precise did not recognize all my cards so I was unable to test it.
The IGP is connected via DVI to a 24" monitor and via VGA to a 17" monitor, all
good so far. Then I have three monitors left, two 15" VGA and one 17" vga, so
to use all monitors, I have to use one DVI-VGA adapter. No matter in what
order/combination I connect the monitors to the video cards, the monitor that
is connected via the adapter always flickers along with the other monitor on
that same card (does not matter which card). It seems like the two monitors
have two sperate framebuffers, but by default they both show the framebuffer
for the monitor with adapter, but when I move the mouse they switch rapidly
from that framebuffer to the other and back.
Here are three video's showing the problem:
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQiJADHGuZg (Top-Right monitor connected via
adapter, in the same card as Bottom-Right)
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lk9muK8f06c (Top-Left monitor connected via
adapter, in the same card as Bottom-Right)
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Ses1jUcu2k (Top-Left monitor connected via
adapter, in the same card as Top-Right)

I think it's a xrandr problem because using the same setup with
zaphodhead mode and xinerama, it works but its EXTREMELY slow.

I have already tried another DVI-VGA adapter, but with the same results.
Another strange thing is that xrandr seems to think that two monitors are
clones, but one of which is not connected. xrandr --verbose log:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1199409/+attachment/3944844/+files/xrandr%20--verbose

I have cut out the various supported modes, the full xrandr --verbose output
is attached.
As you see, VGA-2 and DVI-1 apparently are clones, but in this case only
VGA-2 is connected, I don't know if that is normal. I now have connected two
monitors (both 15") to VGA-2 and DVI-1, and the xrandr output has not changed,
it still shows VGA-2 and DVI-1 as cloned, but the two displays still twitch as
in the video's...

Status in lightdm package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I modified my ~/.profile to call "logger". This resulted in in
producing some output on stderr like

  ```
  <13>Jul 11 13:02:46 /usr/sbin/lightdm-session[1408]: profile sourced ...
  ```

This showed an empty zenity prompt.

Logs suggest zenity was failing because it was treating `<13>` as
  pango markup.

  ```
   from markup due to error parsing markup: Error on line 3 char 6: “13” is not
a valid
  ```

We should not assume the error message strings contain valid markup,
  since their source is unknown.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1969512] Re: Totem unable to play video: "The specified movie could not be found"

Totem unable to play video: "The specified movie could not be found"

Bug description:
As part of our ISO testing for the Pi desktop, we attempt to play

https://archive.org/download/BigBuckBunny_124/Content/big_buck_bunny_720p_surround.mp4
with the shipped totem video player.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1971242] Re: printing PDF appears always grey, no color

2023-02-19 Thread Coeur Noir
A workaround suggested by a CUPS developer is to issue the command:

lpadmin -p PRINTER -o print-color-mode-default=color

Is this a permanent workaround or shall I have to issue that command each time
printing needed ?

( the latter is not practicable in my context - many users, many
machines… )
