Hello Jeremy, or anyone else affected,

Accepted gnome-shell into jammy-proposed. The package will build now and
be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
shell/42.9-0ubuntu2 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed
repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
jammy to verification-done-jammy. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-jammy. In either case, without details of your testing we will
not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)

There is a new bugfix release in the stable 42 series.

  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/blob/42.9/NEWS

The overall GNOME project considers GNOME 42 to be end of life now and
there are no more scheduled releases for GNOME Shell 42 after 42.9

The current version of GNOME Shell in Jammy is 42.5.

  Test Case
  -
Complete all the non-optional test cases at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopTeam/TestPlans/GNOMEShell

  What Could Go Wrong
  ---
GNOME Shell is the heart of the Ubuntu desktop experience.

A severe enough bug could mean that people are unable to use their
  desktop version of Ubuntu.

Smaller bugs could interrupt people's workflows.

GNOME Shell is included in the GNOME micro release exception

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates/GNOME

  Other Info
  --
This update requires mutter 42.9 (LP: #1998286). This was done with bumped
dependencies in debian/control. gnome-shell 42.9 could be run with mutter 42.5,
but mixing different versions of mutter & gnome-shell is not supported upstream.

2023-06-23 Thread Steve Langasek
I have confirmed that the updated evince, without an updated apparmor,
fails in lunar with this error on stderr from evince:

internal error, please report: running "chromium" failed: open

that looks sufficient to me to move forward with this SRU, with the
existing test case.

Systemd socket activation for Speech Dispatcher.

    - Creates the speech-dispatcher.socket;
    - Modifies the server so that it can detect it was automatically launched
by that socket activation; and
    - Modifies the Autotools files accordingly.

  [Impact]

Its relevance is described in [1], of which I quote the essential
  parts [my notes in brackets]:

  > Sandboxed applications [snaps] that use Speech Dispatcher currently bundle
it inside of the sandbox, so that each application has its own "private"
instance of Speech Dispatcher running. This works more or less, but it has the
downside that speech dispatcher cannot coordinate simultaneous messages from
multiple apps. When multiple sandboxed apps use Speech Dispatcher at the same
time, the text reading overlaps.
  >
  > In order to solve this issue, I would really like to give sandboxed apps
access to the Speech Dispatcher instance of the host.

That can be done by implementing the action of the speech dispatcher
  service via a Systemd socket:

  > The only issue I see is having it auto launch. I think it would
probably be a good step forward for speech-dispatcher to be auto
launched by a systemd socket like other daemons already do on demand.
That way the host speech-dispatcher with it's configuration would be
  used by all snaps,

  [Additional information]

The changes are already merged upstream[21][22][23], but still not
  released.

I have built and installed the package in Mantic and verified that
running spd-say from inside a snap causes the host's dispatcher to
spawn and emit sound — see 'Test case' for more details. This has also
been verified in Jammy by Lissyx[31][32] and there is a merge
proposal[4] for the Firefox snap that assumes the incorporation of
  this delta in speech-dispatcher.

Note: Either the installed socket needs to be started manually to
function correctly or the session must be restarted or the system
  needs to be rebooted.

  [Test case]

Install the proposed speech-dispatcher and the snap[5] containing spd-
say. Restart the user session so the new systemd unit gets activated.
  Then,

    snap run --shell geheim
    $ XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/run/user/1000 spd-say hi

should say "hi" through your loudspeakers. If you have no loudspeakers
or if you are testing in a virtual machine, you can use Pavucontrol to
verify that the dummy output device meter shows activity right after
  you issue the last command.

  [Regression potential]

If the socket communication were not working (e.g. connection
refused), then this would result in text-to-speech failing, even for a
  not sandboxed program.

Do note, however, that if the socket were not available for whatever
reason (e.g. the user didn't start it manually nor rebooted), then the
sd_listen_fds(0) >= 1 test would be false and no regression would be
observed, as then the program would fallback to its usual operation.

  Fix Released

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

The pscc-lite package provides an open source implementation of PC/SC,
the de-facto standard to interface Personal Computers with Smart
  Cards/Readers.

This bug is in the upstream debian packaging, and results in the
pcscd.socket being disabled after installation. This prevents
automatic startup of the associated pcscd.service, thus preventing
automatic handling of Smart Cards/Readers w/out manual intervention to
enable the socket (which doesn't persist across reboots).

This is especially painful for users that require Smart Authentication
  for login.

  [ Test Plan ]

  Steps to reproduce:

  1. If installed, remove and do a fresh install of the package pcscd
(the sole version released for jammy is 1.9.5-3).

  2. Verify that the pcscd.socket is disabled:

  $ systemctl status pcscd.socket
  ○ pcscd.socket - PC/SC Smart Card Daemon Activation Socket
   Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/pcscd.socket; disabled; vendor
preset: enabled)
   Active: inactive (dead)
     Triggers: ● pcscd.service
   Listen: /run/pcscd/pcscd.comm (Stream)

  3. [Optional] insert a Smart Card or Crypto Token (e.g. a Yubikey or
Nitrokey) that's known to work on Ubuntu and verify that it fails to
  work.

Repeating the same steps with a package built with the patch attached
to comment #27 should ensure that the socket is enabled, and that
interaction with a Smart Card or Crypto Token should work w/out manual
  intervention.

[ Where problems could occur ]

This is a back-ported change from upstream and is a result of a bug in
dh_installsystemd (see comment #26). As such the risk is minimal.

The only potential risk of failure I can come up with is a snap that
stages the old version of the client library, as it would be looking
in the wrong place for the socket.

  [ Other Info ]

This bug was originally reported against Ubuntu Mate 22.04, however it
applies to all derivatives of Ubuntu Desktop 22.04 LTS.

Note - while there's some disagreement as to whether this bug occurs
100% of the time across all 22.04 installations, it's pretty clear
from the upstream Debian bug and subsequent packaging fix that we
  should land this.

As the upstream fix landed in 1.9.9-2 (which is already released in mantic)
only the following releases are impacted by this bug:
   - jammy
   - kinetic
   - lunar

Status in evince package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Opening a PDF under evince, then clicking an https: link within the
PDF fails to open the link in Firefox. On the command line, evince
  reports:

  $ evince test.pdf
  env: ‘/snap/bin/firefox’: Permission denied

In dmesg, the following message appears each time the link is clicked:

  denied_mask="x" fsuid=1000 ouid=0

This may be related to (or a regression of?) LP: #964510 as it's
clearly aa related, but I don't think it's a direct duplicate given
the audit log is rather different.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2024931] [NEW] Last LTS version of ubuntu use a deprecated gnome version with crashes and known performance issues

2023-06-23 Thread Yhojann Aguilera
Public bug reported:

Sometimes gnome becomes too slow and consumes too much CPU, during the
day sometimes it runs very smoothly and suddenly it gets extremely slow
and the cpu consumption gets too high.

I have notified the Gnome development team of this, providing all
possible evidence, but they have told me that my system uses an outdated
and unsupported version of Gnome: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-
shell/-/issues/6788

It is the version that comes by default in the latest updated version of
Ubuntu 22.04 LTS.

Why is Ubuntu using an outdated version that has known performance
issues?, how can I fix the problem I'm currently having with my system?

The main problem:

Enviroment:

whk@whk-MS-7D53:~$ lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS
Release:22.04
Codename: jammy
whk@whk-MS-7D53:~$ gnome-shell --version
GNOME Shell 42.5

I don't use third party extensions in gnome shell, the problem is observed in
xorg and in wayland.
My hardware:

- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D.
- RAM: 128 GB 3200Mhz.
- Disk: WD BLACK 2TB SN770 NVMe.
- Motherboard: MSI MPG X570S Edge.
- GPU: XFX Speedster MERC319 AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT.

Sometimes gnome becomes too slow and consumes too much CPU, during the day
sometimes it runs very smoothly and suddenly it gets extremely slow and the cpu
consumption gets too high, the dock barely responds, the windows move very
slowly, but at the same time I can open a new generation game and run
excellently at 60fps (need for speed heat over steam), so I doubt it's a
graphic driver problem.
I don't know why this happens, it happens randomly during the course of the
day. I've checked the computer logs but currently I don't see anything relevant.

Some time ago I raised a similar problem:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/tracker/-/issues/342 , i still have the
same symptoms but without the log messages in rsyslog.

I have created a video reproducing this problem:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRhgkfbu4AI
Some points to consider:

- I don't use gnome shell extensions.
- Gnome software and Snap store are uninstalled so the consumption issue
doesn't go that way.
- All my apps are closed, I don't have any personal apps open in the background.
- The open directory has no files so I rule out that it could be a high load
due to content rendering.
- Disk usage is low so there are no IO blocks.
- The whole gnome environment gets slow, not just the windows, but also the
context menu display, side dock navigation and top menu display when trying to
shut down the computer, but the content of the other applications is very fast,
so I don't think it's a general problem with the equipment or hardware,
otherwise the other applications would have a very bad performance, but it's
not like that. I think the problem is caused solely by gnome, but I don't know
how to diagnose this.

If you need more information or to run some kind of diagnostic, let me
know.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2024661] Re: Unable to configure Wireguard connection at NetworkManager interface

2023-06-23 Thread Danilo Egea Gondolfo
After some more digging, turns out it's not a problem with Netplan.
Although, the problem will manifest depending on how Netplan generates
the configuration for Network Manager.

When selecting the option to store the private key in the KDE wallet
agent, the option "private-key-flags=1" will be added to the resulting
.nmconnection file and the private key will be omitted.

In this case, all the properties set in the group [wireguard] in the
keyfile are not supported by the netplan's keyfile parser and will be
left to be added to the keyfile *after* the wireguard peers, like this:

-
[connection]
id=wg0
type=wireguard
...

[wireguard-peer.M9nt4YujIOmNrRmpIRTmYSfMdrpvE7u6WkG8FY8WjG4=]
endpoint=10.20.30.40:51820
allowed-ips=0.0.0.0/0;

[wireguard]
#Netplan: passthrough setting
private-key-flags=1
#Netplan: passthrough setting
listen-port=51820
---

For some reason, Network Manager will load the connection but *will not*
load the wireguard-peer section.

Moving the [wireguard] section to above [wireguard-peer...] resolves the
issue.

I can't find a reference that says that [wireguard] is supposed to come
before [wireguard-peer].

A workaround you can use while we work on a fix is not use the option to
encrypt the private key and store it in the network manager
.nmconnection file.

It happens when using "adsysctl update -m" or "adsysctl update
  usern...@domain.com.br /tmp/krb5c_getentId_randomdnumber" and just
  "adsysctl update" too.

I've upgrade the machine to 22.10 and the error changed to:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1983112] Re: Appstream does not install config file

2023-06-23 Thread James Paton-Smith
Had some time to test this more.

I'm almost certain this is caused by the server autoinstall method.

After doing another manual server install (interactive), and installing
ubuntu-desktop-minimal, I just need to do a `snap refresh snapd` to fix
the issue with the software store. /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50appstream is
present without any extra steps.

If I do an autoinstall, and list appstream as the only package to install,
/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50appstream is missing.
The command run by the installer is below:
```
/usr/bin/apt-get --quiet --assume-yes
--option=Dpkg::options::=--force-unsafe-io
--option=Dpkg::Options::=--force-confold install appstream
```

But if I run this manually on a clean system,
/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50appstream is present. So the issue must be
something else related to the autoinstall.

I can only replicate this issue if using the Ubuntu Autoinstall method.

Should I open a separate issue for this? I've already added subiquity
package to the affected packages list.

Bug description:
After performing an Ubuntu automated server install, and installing
the ubuntu-desktop-minimal package (which includes appstream as a
dependency) then the snap-store, the snap-store will fail to display
search results for .deb packages in the Ubuntu apt repositories.

This is due to a missing config file (/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50appstream)
which is supposed to be installed as part of the appstream package.

The issue can be fixed by re-installing appstream with the following

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2007652] Re: [snap] PWA don't launch as applications, just another chromium window

2023-06-23 Thread Nathan Teodosio
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1732482 ***

The problem is https://forum.snapcraft.io/t/how-to-expose-desktop-files-

Probably duplicate of the there mentioned LP:1732482.

I can confirm it is not a problem from Chromium PPA.

I have recently converted from deb to snap package of chromium and
progressive web applications (PWAs) launch just as another window of

manager (for example when switching using Super+Tab) or dock (grouped
  under chromium windows).

This is either a regression of the snap package vs deb or ubuntu 20.04
vs ubuntu 18.04 (I am not able to differentiate between these two
  since both happened together).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2024887] [NEW] Bad image quality when saving JPEG or PDF scans

2023-06-23 Thread Geert Uytterhoeven
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS
Release:22.04
simple-scan:
  Installed: 42.0-1
  Candidate: 42.0-1
  Version table:
 *** 42.0-1 500
500 http://be.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu jammy/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

When saving a document scanned using "Image" settings to JPEG or PDF format,
the resulting quality is really bad.
The image shown in the scan window looks fine, so this is not a scanner issue.
When saving to (lossless) PNG, the quality is also fine.

This is also reflected in the file sizes, e.g. for a 600 dpi scan of a 19x13 cm
photo:
  - PNG: 12575069 bytes (OK)
  - JPEG: 227595 bytes (BAD)
  - PDF: 229414 bytes (BAD)
It looks like the compression rate for (embedded) JPEG files is way too large.

When scanning using "Text" settings, the resulting quality is fine (I
rescanned an old document and compared the results). The difference with
a scan using the "Image" settings is very clear, even for text
documents.

Version 3.36.3-0ubuntu0.20.04.0 did not have this problem.
I downloaded and installed 42.5-1 from kinetic, but that did not fix the issue.

Thanks!

** Affects: simple-scan (Ubuntu)

 Status: New

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2024883] [NEW] [feature request] add support for install-oem subcommand

2023-06-23 Thread Olivier Gayot
Public bug reported:

The `ubuntu-drivers list-oem` command can be used to list OEM meta-
packages, which is great.

However, there seems to be no way to install listed OEM meta-packages without
also pulling all the applicable third-party drivers - which is something that
we want in subiquity.
`ubuntu-drivers install ` does not do the trick and reading
the code, it seems intentional.

One could simply install the packages using apt-get install ; but then
they don't get upgraded to their version in the OEM archive. Instead,
one would need to run:

 * apt-get install# To install the package from the Ubuntu
archive
 * apt-get update # To make the system aware of the OEM archive
 * apt-get install# To upgrade the package to the version in
the OEM archive

In subiquity, we decided to duplicate some logic from ubuntu-drivers to
have the ability to do the above. See
https://github.com/canonical/subiquity/pull/1700

Having a single implementation would be ideal so I would suggest adding
a `ubuntu-drivers install-oem` or similar subcommand. This could also be
implemented as a --oem-only flag that would do the opposite of --no-oem.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1991022] Re: [SRU] Service activation via Systemd socket

2023-06-23 Thread Sebastien Bacher
** Description changed:

  [Description]

Systemd socket activation for Speech Dispatcher.

    - Creates the speech-dispatcher.socket;
    - Modifies the server so that it can detect it was automatically launched
by that socket activation; and
    - Modifies the Autotools files accordingly.

  [Impact]

Its relevance is described in [1], of which I quote the essential parts
  [my notes in brackets]:

  >

The changes are already merged upstream[21][22][23], but still not
  released.

I have built and installed the package in Mantic and verified that
running spd-say from inside a snap causes the host's dispatcher to spawn
and emit sound — see 'Test case' for more details. This has also been
verified in Jammy by Lissyx[31][32] and there is a merge proposal[4] for
the Firefox snap that assumes the incorporation of this delta in speech-
  dispatcher.

Note: Either the installed socket needs to be started manually to
function correctly or the session must be restarted or the system needs
  to be rebooted.

  [Test case]

Install the proposed speech-dispatcher and the snap[5] containing spd-
- say. Then,
+ say. Restart the user session. Then,

-   systemctl start --user speech-dispatcher.socket #Or restart session or
machine
    snap run --shell geheim
    $ XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/run/user/1000 spd-say hi

should say "hi" through your loudspeakers. If you have no loudspeakers
or if you are testing in a virtual machine, you can use Pavucontrol to
verify that the dummy output device meter shows activity right after you
  issue the last command.

  [Regression potential]

If the socket communication were not working (e.g. connection refused),
then this would result in text-to-speech failing, even for a not
  sandboxed program.

Do note, however, that if the socket were not available for whatever
reason (e.g. the user didn't start it manually nor rebooted), then the
sd_listen_fds(0) >= 1 test would be false and no regression would be
observed, as then the program would fallback to its usual operation.
